ā€œYo hi koci, āvuso, bhikkhu vā bhikkhunÄ« vā mama santike arahattappattiį¹ byākaroti, sabbo so catÅ«hi maggehi, etesaį¹ vā aƱƱatarena. ā€œReverends, all of the monks and nuns who declare in my presence that they have attained perfection, did so by one or other of four paths.

Katamehi catūhi? What four?

Idha, āvuso, bhikkhu samathapubbaį¹…gamaį¹ vipassanaį¹ bhāveti. Take a mendicant who develops serenity before discernment.

Tassa samathapubbaį¹…gamaį¹ vipassanaį¹ bhāvayato maggo saƱjāyati. As they do so, the path is born in them.

So taį¹ maggaį¹ āsevati bhāveti bahulÄ«karoti. They cultivate, develop, and make much of it.

Tassa taį¹ maggaį¹ āsevato bhāvayato bahulÄ«karoto saį¹yojanāni pahÄ«yanti, anusayā byantÄ«honti. By doing so, they give up the fetters and eliminate the underlying tendencies.

Puna caparaį¹, āvuso, bhikkhu vipassanāpubbaį¹…gamaį¹ samathaį¹ bhāveti. Another mendicant develops discernment before serenity.

Puna caparaį¹, āvuso, bhikkhu samathavipassanaį¹ yuganaddhaį¹ bhāveti. Another mendicant develops serenity and discernment in conjunction.

Tassa samathavipassanaį¹ yuganaddhaį¹ bhāvayato maggo saƱjāyati.

Puna caparaį¹, āvuso, bhikkhuno dhammuddhaccaviggahitaį¹ mānasaį¹ hoti. Another mendicantā€™s mind is seized by restlessness to realize the teaching.

Hoti so, āvuso, samayo yaį¹ taį¹ cittaį¹ ajjhattameva santiį¹į¹hati sannisÄ«dati ekodi hoti samādhiyati. But there comes a time when their mind is stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in samādhi.

Tassa maggo saƱjāyati. The path is born in them.

Yo hi koci, āvuso, bhikkhu vā bhikkhunÄ« vā mama santike arahattappattiį¹ byākaroti, sabbo so imehi catÅ«hi maggehi, etesaį¹ vā aƱƱatarenāā€ti. All of the monks and nuns who declare in my presence that they have attained perfection, did so by one or other of these four paths.ā€
