Upavāį¹‡asutta With Upavāį¹‡a

Atha kho āyasmā upavāį¹‡o yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā sāriputtena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then Venerable Upavāna went up to Venerable Sāriputta, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā upavāį¹‡o āyasmantaį¹ sāriputtaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, Upavāna sat down to one side, and said to Sāriputta:

ā€œKiį¹ nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, vijjāyantakaro hotÄ«ā€ti? ā€œReverend Sāriputta, do you become a terminator because of knowledge?ā€

ā€œNo hidaį¹, āvusoā€. ā€œThatā€™s not it, reverend.ā€

ā€œKiį¹ panāvuso sāriputta, caraį¹‡enantakaro hotÄ«ā€ti? ā€œDo you become a terminator because of conduct?ā€

ā€œNo hidaį¹, āvusoā€. ā€œThatā€™s not it, reverend.ā€

ā€œKiį¹ panāvuso sāriputta, vijjācaraį¹‡enantakaro hotÄ«ā€ti? ā€œDo you become a terminator because of both knowledge and conduct?ā€

ā€œNo hidaį¹, āvusoā€. ā€œThatā€™s not it, reverend.ā€

ā€œKiį¹ panāvuso sāriputta, aƱƱatra vijjācaraį¹‡enantakaro hotÄ«ā€ti? ā€œDo you become a terminator for some reason other than knowledge and conduct?ā€

ā€œNo hidaį¹, āvusoā€. ā€œThatā€™s not it, reverend.ā€

ā€œā€˜Kiį¹ nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, vijjāyantakaro hotÄ«ā€™ti, iti puį¹­į¹­ho samāno: ā€œReverend Sāriputta, when asked whether you become a terminator because of knowledge or conduct or knowledge and conduct, or for some other reason,

ā€˜no hidaį¹, āvusoā€™ti vadesi. you say ā€˜thatā€™s not itā€™.

ā€˜Kiį¹ panāvuso sāriputta, caraį¹‡enantakaro hotÄ«ā€™ti, iti puį¹­į¹­ho samāno:

ā€˜no hidaį¹, āvusoā€™ti vadesi.

ā€˜Kiį¹ panāvuso sāriputta, vijjācaraį¹‡enantakaro hotÄ«ā€™ti, iti puį¹­į¹­ho samāno:

ā€˜no hidaį¹, āvusoā€™ti vadesi.

ā€˜Kiį¹ panāvuso sāriputta, aƱƱatra vijjācaraį¹‡enantakaro hotÄ«ā€™ti, iti puį¹­į¹­ho samāno:

ā€˜no hidaį¹, āvusoā€™ti vadesi.

Yathā kathaį¹ panāvuso, antakaro hotÄ«ā€ti? How then do you become a terminator?ā€

ā€œVijjāya ce, āvuso, antakaro abhavissa, saupādānova samāno antakaro abhavissa. ā€œReverend, if you became a terminator because of knowledge, then even someone who still has fuel for grasping could be a terminator.

Caraį¹‡ena ce, āvuso, antakaro abhavissa, saupādānova samāno antakaro abhavissa. If you became a terminator because of conduct, then even someone who still has fuel for grasping could be a terminator.

Vijjācaraį¹‡ena ce, āvuso, antakaro abhavissa, saupādānova samāno antakaro abhavissa. If you became a terminator because of both knowledge and conduct, then even someone who still has fuel for grasping could be a terminator.

AƱƱatra vijjācaraį¹‡ena ce, āvuso, antakaro abhavissa, puthujjano antakaro abhavissa. If you became a terminator for some reason other than knowledge and conduct, then even an ordinary person could be a terminator.

Puthujjano hi, āvuso, aƱƱatra vijjācaraį¹‡ena. For an ordinary person lacks knowledge and conduct.

Caraį¹‡avipanno kho, āvuso, yathābhÅ«taį¹ na jānāti na passati. Reverend, someone lacking good conduct does not know and see things as they are.

Caraį¹‡asampanno yathābhÅ«taį¹ jānāti passati. Someone accomplished in good conduct knows and sees things as they are.

YathābhÅ«taį¹ jānaį¹ passaį¹ antakaro hotÄ«ā€ti. Knowing and seeing things as they are, one is a terminator.ā€
