kamitvÄ ÄyasmatÄ sÄriputtena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then Venerable UpavÄna went up to Venerable SÄriputta, and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ upavÄį¹o Äyasmantaį¹ sÄriputtaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, UpavÄna sat down to one side, and said to SÄriputta:
āKiį¹ nu kho, Ävuso sÄriputta, vijjÄyantakaro hotÄ«āti? āReverend SÄriputta, do you become a terminator because of knowledge?ā
āNo hidaį¹, Ävusoā. āThatās not it, reverend.ā
āKiį¹ panÄvuso sÄriputta, caraį¹enantakaro hotÄ«āti? āDo you become a terminator because of conduct?ā
āNo hidaį¹, Ävusoā. āThatās not it, reverend.ā
āKiį¹ panÄvuso sÄriputta, vijjÄcaraį¹enantakaro hotÄ«āti? āDo you become a terminator because of both knowledge and conduct?ā
āNo hidaį¹, Ävusoā. āThatās not it, reverend.ā
āKiį¹ panÄvuso sÄriputta, aƱƱatra vijjÄcaraį¹enantakaro hotÄ«āti? āDo you become a terminator for some reason other than knowledge and conduct?ā

āKiį¹ panÄvuso sÄriputta, caraį¹enantakaro hotÄ«āti, iti puį¹į¹ho samÄno:

YathÄ kathaį¹ panÄvuso, antakaro hotÄ«āti? How then do you become a terminator?ā
āVijjÄya ce, Ävuso, antakaro abhavissa, saupÄdÄnova samÄno antakaro abhavissa. āReverend, if you became a terminator because of knowledge, then even someone who still has fuel for grasping could be a terminator.
Caraį¹ena ce, Ävuso, antakaro abhavissa, saupÄdÄnova samÄno antakaro abhavissa. If you became a terminator because of conduct, then even someone who still has fuel for grasping could be a terminator.
VijjÄcaraį¹ena ce, Ävuso, antakaro abhavissa, saupÄdÄnova samÄno antakaro abhavissa. If you became a terminator because of both knowledge and conduct, then even someone who still has fuel for grasping could be a terminator.
AƱƱatra vijjÄcaraį¹ena ce, Ävuso, antakaro abhavissa, puthujjano antakaro abhavissa. If you became a terminator for some reason other than knowledge and conduct, then even an ordinary person could be a terminator.
Puthujjano hi, Ävuso, aƱƱatra vijjÄcaraį¹ena. For an ordinary person lacks knowledge and conduct.
Caraį¹avipanno kho, Ävuso, yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ na jÄnÄti na passati. Reverend, someone lacking good conduct does not know and see things as they are.
Caraį¹asampanno yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ jÄnÄti passati. Someone accomplished in good conduct knows and sees things as they are.
YathÄbhÅ«taį¹ jÄnaį¹ passaį¹ antakaro hotÄ«āti. Knowing and seeing things as they are, one is a terminator.ā
