Rāhulasutta With Rāhula

Atha kho āyasmā rāhulo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho āyasmantaį¹ rāhulaį¹ bhagavā etadavoca: Then Venerable Rāhula went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

ā€œYā ca, rāhula, ajjhattikā pathavÄ«dhātu yā ca bāhirā pathavÄ«dhātu, pathavÄ«dhāturevesā. ā€œRāhula, the interior earth element and the exterior earth element are just the earth element.

ā€˜Taį¹ netaį¹ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attāā€™ti, evametaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ sammappaƱƱāya daį¹­į¹­habbaį¹. This should be truly seen with right understanding like this: ā€˜This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.ā€™

Evametaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ sammappaƱƱāya disvā pathavÄ«dhātuyā nibbindati, pathavÄ«dhātuyā cittaį¹ virājeti. When you truly see with right understanding, you grow disillusioned with the earth element, detaching the mind from the earth element.

Yā ca, rāhula, ajjhattikā āpodhātu yā ca bāhirā āpodhātu, āpodhāturevesā. The interior water element and the exterior water element are just the water element.

ā€˜Taį¹ netaį¹ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attāā€™ti, evametaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ sammappaƱƱāya daį¹­į¹­habbaį¹. This should be truly seen with right understanding like this: ā€˜This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.ā€™

Yato kho, rāhula, bhikkhu imāsu catÅ«su dhātÅ«su nevattānaį¹ na attaniyaį¹ samanupassati, ayaį¹ vuccati, rāhula, bhikkhu acchecchi taį¹‡haį¹, vivattayi saį¹yojanaį¹, sammā mānābhisamayā antamakāsi dukkhassāā€ti. When a mendicant sees these four elements as neither self nor belonging to self, theyā€™re called a mendicant who has cut off craving, untied the fetters, and by rightly comprehending conceit has made an end of suffering.ā€
