Sotānugatasutta Followed by Ear

ā€œSotānugatānaį¹, bhikkhave, dhammānaį¹, vacasā paricitānaį¹, manasānupekkhitānaį¹, diį¹­į¹­hiyā suppaį¹­ividdhānaį¹ cattāro ānisaį¹sā pāį¹­ikaį¹…khā. ā€œMendicants, you can expect four benefits when the teachings have been followed by ear, rehearsed, examined by the mind, and well comprehended theoretically.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammaį¹ pariyāpuį¹‡Ätiā€”Take a mendicant who memorizes the teachingā€”

suttaį¹, geyyaį¹, veyyākaraį¹‡aį¹, gāthaį¹, udānaį¹, itivuttakaį¹, jātakaį¹, abbhutadhammaį¹, vedallaį¹. statements, mixed prose & verse, discussions, verses, inspired exclamations, legends, stories of past lives, amazing stories, and elaborations.

Tassa te dhammā sotānugatā honti, vacasā paricitā, manasānupekkhitā, diį¹­į¹­hiyā suppaį¹­ividdhā. Theyā€™ve followed those teachings by ear, rehearsed them, examined them by the mind, and well comprehended them theoretically.

So muį¹­į¹­hassati kālaį¹ kurumāno aƱƱataraį¹ devanikāyaį¹ upapajjati. But they die unmindful and are reborn in one of the orders of gods.

Tassa tattha sukhino dhammapadā plavanti. Being happy there, passages of the teaching come back to them.

Dandho, bhikkhave, satuppādo; Memory comes up slowly,

atha so satto khippaį¹yeva visesagāmÄ« hoti. but then that being quickly reaches distinction.

Sotānugatānaį¹, bhikkhave, dhammānaį¹, vacasā paricitānaį¹, manasānupekkhitānaį¹, diį¹­į¹­hiyā suppaį¹­ividdhānaį¹ ayaį¹ paį¹­hamo ānisaį¹so pāį¹­ikaį¹…kho. This is the first benefit you can expect when the teachings have been followed by ear, rehearsed, examined by the mind, and well comprehended theoretically.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammaį¹ pariyāpuį¹‡Ätiā€”Furthermore, take a mendicant who memorizes the teachingā€”

suttaį¹, geyyaį¹, veyyākaraį¹‡aį¹, gāthaį¹, udānaį¹, itivuttakaį¹, jātakaį¹, abbhutadhammaį¹, vedallaį¹. statements, mixed prose & verse, discussions, verses, inspired exclamations, legends, stories of past lives, amazing stories, and elaborations.

Tassa te dhammā sotānugatā honti, vacasā paricitā, manasānupekkhitā, diį¹­į¹­hiyā suppaį¹­ividdhā. Theyā€™ve followed those teachings by ear, rehearsed them, examined them by the mind, and well comprehended them theoretically.

So muį¹­į¹­hassati kālaį¹ kurumāno aƱƱataraį¹ devanikāyaį¹ upapajjati. But they die unmindful and are reborn in one of the orders of gods.

Tassa tattha na heva kho sukhino dhammapadā plavanti; Though theyā€™re happy there, passages of the teaching donā€™t come back to them.

api ca kho bhikkhu iddhimā cetovasippatto devaparisāyaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti. However, a mendicant with psychic powers, who has achieved mastery of the mind, teaches Dhamma to the assembly of gods.

Tassa evaį¹ hoti: They think:

ā€˜ayaį¹ vā so dhammavinayo, yatthāhaį¹ pubbe brahmacariyaį¹ acarinā€™ti. ā€˜I used to lead the spiritual life in this same teaching and training.ā€™

Dandho, bhikkhave, satuppādo; Memory comes up slowly,

atha so satto khippameva visesagāmī hoti. but then that being quickly reaches distinction.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso kusalo bherisaddassa. Suppose a person was skilled in the sound of drums.

So addhānamaggappaį¹­ipanno bherisaddaį¹ suį¹‡eyya. While traveling along a road they hear the sound of drums.

Tassa na heva kho assa kaį¹…khā vā vimati vā: They wouldnā€™t have any doubts or uncertainties about whether

ā€˜bherisaddo nu kho, na nu kho bherisaddoā€™ti. that was the sound of drums or not.

Atha kho bherisaddotveva niį¹­į¹­haį¹ gaccheyya. Theyā€™d just conclude, ā€˜Thatā€™s the sound of drums.ā€™

Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammaį¹ pariyāpuį¹‡Ätiā€”In the same way, take a mendicant who memorizes the teaching ā€¦

suttaį¹, geyyaį¹, veyyākaraį¹‡aį¹, gāthaį¹, udānaį¹, itivuttakaį¹, jātakaį¹, abbhutadhammaį¹, vedallaį¹.

This is the second benefit you can expect when the teachings have been followed by ear, rehearsed, examined by the mind, and well comprehended theoretically.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammaį¹ pariyāpuį¹‡Ätiā€”Furthermore, take a mendicant who memorizes the teachingā€”

Tassa tattha na heva kho sukhino dhammapadā plavanti, napi bhikkhu iddhimā cetovasippatto devaparisāyaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti; But passages of the teaching donā€™t come back to them when theyā€™re happy, nor does a mendicant with psychic powers ā€¦ teach Dhamma to the assembly of gods.

api ca kho devaputto devaparisāyaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti. However, a god teaches Dhamma to the assembly of gods.

Tassa evaį¹ hoti: They think:

ā€˜ayaį¹ vā so dhammavinayo, yatthāhaį¹ pubbe brahmacariyaį¹ acarinā€™ti. ā€˜I used to lead the spiritual life in this same teaching and training.ā€™

Dandho, bhikkhave, satuppādo; Memory comes up slowly,

atha so satto khippaį¹yeva visesagāmÄ« hoti. but then that being quickly reaches distinction.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso kusalo saį¹…khasaddassa. Suppose a person was skilled in the sound of horns.

So addhānamaggappaį¹­ipanno saį¹…khasaddaį¹ suį¹‡eyya. While traveling along a road they hear the sound of horns.

Tassa na heva kho assa kaį¹…khā vā vimati vā: They wouldnā€™t have any doubt about whether

ā€˜saį¹…khasaddo nu kho, na nu kho saį¹…khasaddoā€™ti. that was the sound of horns or not.

Atha kho saį¹…khasaddotveva niį¹­į¹­haį¹ gaccheyya. Theyā€™d just conclude, ā€˜Thatā€™s the sound of horns.ā€™

Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammaį¹ pariyāpuį¹‡Ätiā€”In the same way, take a mendicant who memorizes the teaching ā€¦

ā€˜ayaį¹ vā so dhammavinayo, yatthāhaį¹ pubbe brahmacariyaį¹ acarinā€™ti.

This is the third benefit you can expect when the teachings have been followed by ear, rehearsed, examined by the mind, and well comprehended theoretically.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammaį¹ pariyāpuį¹‡Ätiā€”Furthermore, take a mendicant who memorizes the teachingā€”

suttaį¹, geyyaį¹, veyyākaraį¹‡aį¹, gāthaį¹, udānaį¹, itivuttakaį¹, jātakaį¹, abbhutadhammaį¹, vedallaį¹. statements, mixed prose & verse, discussions, verses, inspired exclamations, legends, stories of past lives, amazing stories, and elaborations.

Tassa te dhammā sotānugatā honti, vacasā paricitā, manasānupekkhitā, diį¹­į¹­hiyā suppaį¹­ividdhā. Theyā€™ve followed those teachings by ear, rehearsed them, examined them by the mind, and well comprehended them theoretically.

Tassa tattha na heva kho sukhino dhammapadā plavanti, napi bhikkhu iddhimā cetovasippatto devaparisāyaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti, napi devaputto devaparisāyaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti; But passages of the teaching donā€™t come back to them when theyā€™re happy, and neither a mendicant with psychic powers ā€¦ nor a god teaches Dhamma to the assembly of gods.

api ca kho opapātiko opapātikaį¹ sāreti: But a being who has been reborn spontaneously reminds another such being:

ā€˜sarasi tvaį¹, mārisa, sarasi tvaį¹, mārisa, yattha mayaį¹ pubbe brahmacariyaį¹ acarimhāā€™ti. ā€˜Do you remember, good fellow? Do you remember where we used to lead the spiritual life?ā€™

So evamāha: He says:

ā€˜sarāmi, mārisa, sarāmi, mārisāā€™ti. ā€˜I remember, good fellow, I remember!ā€™

Dandho, bhikkhave, satuppādo; Memory comes up slowly,

atha so satto khippaį¹yeva visesagāmÄ« hoti. but then that being quickly reaches distinction.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, dve sahāyakā sahapaį¹sukÄ«įø·ikā. Suppose there were two friends who had played together in the sand.

Te kadāci karahaci aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ samāgaccheyyuį¹. Some time or other theyā€™d meet.

AƱƱo pana sahāyako sahāyakaį¹ evaį¹ vadeyya: And one friend would say to the other:

ā€˜idampi, samma, sarasi, idampi, samma, sarasÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Do you remember this, friend? Do you remember that, friend?ā€™

So evaį¹ vadeyya: Theyā€™d say:

ā€˜sarāmi, samma, sarāmi, sammāā€™ti. ā€˜I remember, friend, I remember!ā€™

Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammaį¹ pariyāpuį¹‡Ätiā€”In the same way, take a mendicant who memorizes the teaching ā€¦

suttaį¹, geyyaį¹, veyyākaraį¹‡aį¹, gāthaį¹, udānaį¹, itivuttakaį¹, jātakaį¹, abbhutadhammaį¹, vedallaį¹.

This is the fourth benefit you can expect when the teachings have been followed by ear, rehearsed, examined by the mind, and well comprehended theoretically.

Sotānugatānaį¹, bhikkhave, dhammānaį¹, vacasā paricitānaį¹, manasānupekkhitānaį¹ diį¹­į¹­hiyā suppaį¹­ividdhānaį¹ ime cattāro ānisaį¹sā pāį¹­ikaį¹…khāā€ti. You can expect these four benefits when the teachings have been followed by ear, rehearsed, examined by the mind, and well comprehended theoretically.ā€
