Tatiyapāpadhammasutta Bad Character (3rd)

ā€œPāpadhammaƱca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, pāpadhammena pāpadhammataraƱca; ā€œMendicants, I will teach you bad character and worse character,

kalyāį¹‡adhammaƱca, kalyāį¹‡adhammena kalyāį¹‡adhammataraƱca. Taį¹ suį¹‡Ätha ā€¦peā€¦. good character and better character.

ā€œKatamo ca, bhikkhave, pāpadhammo? And who has bad character?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco pāį¹‡ÄtipātÄ« hoti ā€¦peā€¦ micchādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti. Itā€™s someone who kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech thatā€™s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And theyā€™re covetous, malicious, with wrong view.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, pāpadhammo. This is called bad character.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pāpadhammena pāpadhammataro? And who has worse character?

Idha bhikkhave, ekacco attanā ca pāį¹‡ÄtipātÄ« hoti, paraƱca pāį¹‡Ätipāte samādapeti ā€¦peā€¦ attanā ca micchādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti, paraƱca micchādiį¹­į¹­hiyā samādapeti. Itā€™s someone who kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech thatā€™s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. Theyā€™re covetous, malicious, with wrong view. And they encourage others to do these things.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, pāpadhammena pāpadhammataro. This is called worse character.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco pāį¹‡Ätipātā paį¹­ivirato hoti ā€¦peā€¦ sammādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti. Itā€™s someone who doesnā€™t kill living creatures, steal, or commit sexual misconduct. They donā€™t use speech thatā€™s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And theyā€™re contented, kind-hearted, with right view.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, kalyāį¹‡adhammo. This is called good character.
