Catutthapāpadhammasutta Bad Character (4th)

ā€œPāpadhammaƱca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, pāpadhammena pāpadhammataraƱca; ā€œMendicants, I will teach you bad character and worse character,

kalyāį¹‡adhammaƱca, kalyāį¹‡adhammena kalyāį¹‡adhammataraƱca. Taį¹ suį¹‡Ätha ā€¦peā€¦. good character and better character.

ā€œKatamo ca, bhikkhave, pāpadhammo? And who has bad character?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco micchādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti ā€¦peā€¦ micchāƱāį¹‡Ä« hoti, micchāvimutti hoti. Itā€™s someone who has wrong view, wrong thought, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, wrong immersion, wrong knowledge, and wrong freedom.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, pāpadhammo. This is called bad character.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pāpadhammena pāpadhammataro? And who has worse character?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco attanā ca micchādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti, paraƱca micchādiį¹­į¹­hiyā samādapeti ā€¦peā€¦ attanā ca micchāƱāį¹‡Ä« hoti, paraƱca micchāƱāį¹‡e samādapeti; Itā€™s someone who has wrong view, wrong thought, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, wrong immersion, wrong knowledge, and wrong freedom. And they encourage others in these same qualities.

attanā ca micchāvimutti hoti, paraƱca micchāvimuttiyā samādapeti.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, pāpadhammena pāpadhammataro. This is called worse character.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, kalyāį¹‡adhammo? And who has good character?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco sammādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti ā€¦peā€¦ sammāƱāį¹‡Ä« hoti, sammāvimutti hoti. Itā€™s someone who has right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right immersion, right knowledge, and right freedom.
