āāIdheva, bhikkhave, paį¹hamo samaį¹o, idha dutiyo samaį¹o, idha tatiyo samaį¹o, idha catuttho samaį¹o; āāOnly here is there a first ascetic, here a second ascetic, here a third ascetic, and here a fourth ascetic.
suĆ±Ć±Ä parappavÄdÄ samaį¹ehi aƱƱehÄ«ātiāOther sects are empty of ascetics.ā
evametaį¹, bhikkhave, sammÄ sÄ«hanÄdaį¹ nadatha. This, mendicants, is how you should rightly roar your lionās roar.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, paį¹hamo samaį¹o? And who is the first ascetic?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu tiį¹į¹aį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ sotÄpanno hoti avinipÄtadhammo niyato sambodhiparÄyaį¹o. Itās a mendicant whoāwith the ending of three fettersāis a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹hamo samaį¹o. This is the first ascetic.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, dutiyo samaį¹o? And who is the second ascetic?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu tiį¹į¹aį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ rÄgadosamohÄnaį¹ tanuttÄ sakadÄgÄmÄ« hoti, sakideva imaį¹ lokaį¹ ÄgantvÄ dukkhassantaį¹ karoti. Itās a mendicant whoāwith the ending of three fetters, and the weakening of greed, hate, and delusionāis a once-returner. They come back to this world once only, then make an end of suffering.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, dutiyo samaį¹o. This is the second ascetic.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, tatiyo samaį¹o? And who is the third ascetic?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ opapÄtiko hoti tattha parinibbÄyÄ« anÄvattidhammo tasmÄ lokÄ. Itās a mendicant whoāwith the ending of the five lower fettersāis reborn spontaneously. Theyāre extinguished there, and are not liable to return from that world.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, tatiyo samaį¹o. This is the third ascetic.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, catuttho samaį¹o? And who is the fourth ascetic?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄ anÄsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱÄvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharati. Itās a mendicant who realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.
