Saį¹…ghabhedakasutta Schism in the Saį¹…gha

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositārāme. At one time the Buddha was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaā€™s Monastery.

Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho āyasmantaį¹ ānandaį¹ bhagavā etadavoca: Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him,

ā€œapi nu taį¹, ānanda, adhikaraį¹‡aį¹ vÅ«pasantanā€ti? ā€œWell, Ānanda, has that disciplinary issue been settled yet?ā€

ā€œKuto taį¹, bhante, adhikaraį¹‡aį¹ vÅ«pasamissati. ā€œHow could it be, sir?

Āyasmato, bhante, anuruddhassa bāhiyo nāma saddhivihāriko kevalakappaį¹ saį¹…ghabhedāya į¹­hito. Venerable Anuruddhaā€™s protĆ©gĆ© Bāhiya remains entirely committed to creating a schism in the Saį¹…gha.

Tatrāyasmā anuruddho na ekavācikampi bhaį¹‡itabbaį¹ maƱƱatÄ«ā€ti. But Anuruddha doesnā€™t think to say a single word about it.ā€

ā€œKadā panānanda, anuruddho saį¹…ghamajjhe adhikaraį¹‡esu voyuƱjati. ā€œBut Ānanda, since when has Anuruddha been involved in disciplinary issues in the midst of the Saį¹…gha?

Nanu, ānanda, yāni kānici adhikaraį¹‡Äni uppajjanti, sabbāni tāni tumhe ceva vÅ«pasametha sāriputtamoggallānā ca. Shouldnā€™t you, together with Sāriputta and Moggallāna, settle all disciplinary issues that come up?

Cattārome, ānanda, atthavase sampassamāno pāpabhikkhu saį¹…ghabhedena nandati. A bad monk sees four reasons to relish schism in the Saį¹…gha.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Idhānanda, pāpabhikkhu dussÄ«lo hoti pāpadhammo asuci saį¹…kassarasamācāro paį¹­icchannakammanto assamaį¹‡o samaį¹‡apaį¹­iƱƱo abrahmacārÄ« brahmacāripaį¹­iƱƱo antopÅ«ti avassuto kasambujāto. Take an unethical monk, of bad qualities, filthy, with suspicious behavior, underhand, no true ascetic or spiritual practitionerā€”though claiming to be oneā€”rotten inside, festering, and depraved.

Tassa evaį¹ hoti: He thinks:

ā€˜sace kho maį¹ bhikkhÅ« jānissantiā€”ā€˜Suppose the monks know that Iā€™m a bad monk ā€¦

dussÄ«lo pāpadhammo asuci saį¹…kassarasamācāro paį¹­icchannakammanto assamaį¹‡o samaį¹‡apaį¹­iƱƱo abrahmacārÄ« brahmacāripaį¹­iƱƱo antopÅ«ti avassuto kasambujātoti, samaggā maį¹ santā nāsessanti; If theyā€™re in harmony, theyā€™ll expel me,

vaggā pana maį¹ na nāsessantÄ«ā€™ti. but if theyā€™re divided they wonā€™t.ā€™

Idaį¹, ānanda, paį¹­hamaį¹ atthavasaį¹ sampassamāno pāpabhikkhu saį¹…ghabhedena nandati. A bad monk sees this as the first reason to relish schism in the Saį¹…gha.

Puna caparaį¹, ānanda, pāpabhikkhu micchādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti, antaggāhikāya diį¹­į¹­hiyā samannāgato. Furthermore, a bad monk has wrong view, heā€™s attached to an extremist view.

Tassa evaį¹ hoti: He thinks:

ā€˜sace kho maį¹ bhikkhÅ« jānissantiā€”ā€˜Suppose the monks know that I have wrong view ā€¦

micchādiį¹­į¹­hiko antaggāhikāya diį¹­į¹­hiyā samannāgatoti, samaggā maį¹ santā nāsessanti; If theyā€™re in harmony theyā€™ll expel me,

vaggā pana maį¹ na nāsessantÄ«ā€™ti. but if theyā€™re divided they wonā€™t.ā€™

Idaį¹, ānanda, dutiyaį¹ atthavasaį¹ sampassamāno pāpabhikkhu saį¹…ghabhedena nandati. A bad monk sees this as the second reason to relish schism in the Saį¹…gha.

Puna caparaį¹, ānanda, pāpabhikkhu micchāājÄ«vo hoti, micchāājÄ«vena jÄ«vikaį¹ kappeti. Furthermore, a bad monk has wrong livelihood and earns a living by wrong livelihood.

Tassa evaį¹ hoti: He thinks:

ā€˜sace kho maį¹ bhikkhÅ« jānissantiā€”ā€˜Suppose the monks know that I have wrong livelihood ā€¦

micchāājÄ«vo micchāājÄ«vena jÄ«vikaį¹ kappetÄ«ti, samaggā maį¹ santā nāsessanti; If theyā€™re in harmony theyā€™ll expel me,

vaggā pana maį¹ na nāsessantÄ«ā€™ti. but if theyā€™re divided they wonā€™t.ā€™

Idaį¹, ānanda, tatiyaį¹ atthavasaį¹ sampassamāno pāpabhikkhu saį¹…ghabhedena nandati. A bad monk sees this as the third reason to relish schism in the Saį¹…gha.

Puna caparaį¹, ānanda, pāpabhikkhu lābhakāmo hoti sakkārakāmo anavaƱƱattikāmo. Furthermore, a bad monk desires material things, honor, and admiration.

Tassa evaį¹ hoti: He thinks:

ā€˜sace kho maį¹ bhikkhÅ« jānissantiā€”ā€˜Suppose the monks know that I desire material things, honor, and admiration.

lābhakāmo sakkārakāmo anavaƱƱattikāmoti, samaggā maį¹ santā na sakkarissanti na garuį¹ karissanti na mānessanti na pÅ«jessanti; If theyā€™re in harmony they wonā€™t honor, respect, revere, or venerate me,

vaggā pana maį¹ sakkarissanti garuį¹ karissanti mānessanti pÅ«jessantÄ«ā€™ti. but if theyā€™re divided they will.ā€™

Idaį¹, ānanda, catutthaį¹ atthavasaį¹ sampassamāno pāpabhikkhu saį¹…ghabhedena nandati. A bad monk sees this as the fourth reason to relish schism in the Saį¹…gha.

Ime kho, ānanda, cattāro atthavase sampassamāno pāpabhikkhu saį¹…ghabhedena nandatÄ«ā€ti. A bad monk sees these four reasons to relish schism in the Saį¹…gha.ā€
