Mālukyaputtasutta With Māluį¹…kyaputta

Atha kho āyasmā mālukyaputto yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā mālukyaputto bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Māluį¹…kyaputta went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œSādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena dhammaį¹ desetu, yamahaį¹ bhagavato dhammaį¹ sutvā eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto vihareyyanā€ti. ā€œSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When Iā€™ve heard it, Iā€™ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā€

ā€œEttha idāni, mālukyaputta, kiį¹ dahare bhikkhÅ« vakkhāma; ā€œWell now, Māluį¹…kyaputta, what are we to say to the young monks,

yatra hi nāma tvaį¹ jiį¹‡į¹‡o vuddho mahallako tathāgatassa saį¹…khittena ovādaį¹ yācasÄ«ā€ti. when even an old man like you, elderly and senior, asks the Realized One for brief advice?ā€

ā€œDesetu me, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena dhammaį¹; desetu sugato saį¹…khittena dhammaį¹. Appeva nāmāhaį¹ bhagavato bhāsitassa atthaį¹ ājāneyyaį¹; appeva nāmāhaį¹ bhagavato bhāsitassa dāyādo assanā€ti. ā€œSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief! May the Holy One teach me the Dhamma in brief! Hopefully I can understand the meaning of what the Buddha says! Hopefully I can be an heir of the Buddhaā€™s teaching!ā€

ā€œCattārome, mālukyaputta, taį¹‡huppādā yattha bhikkhuno taį¹‡hā uppajjamānā uppajjati. ā€œMāluį¹…kyaputta, there are four things that give rise to craving in a mendicant.

Katame cattāro? What four?

CÄ«varahetu vā, mālukyaputta, bhikkhuno taį¹‡hā uppajjamānā uppajjati. For the sake of robes,

Piį¹‡įøapātahetu vā, mālukyaputta, bhikkhuno taį¹‡hā uppajjamānā uppajjati. almsfood,

Senāsanahetu vā, mālukyaputta, bhikkhuno taį¹‡hā uppajjamānā uppajjati. lodgings,

Itibhavābhavahetu vā, mālukyaputta, bhikkhuno taį¹‡hā uppajjamānā uppajjati. or rebirth in this or that state.

Ime kho, mālukyaputta, cattāro taį¹‡huppādā yattha bhikkhuno taį¹‡hā uppajjamānā uppajjati. These are the four things that give rise to craving in a mendicant.

Yato kho, mālukyaputta, bhikkhuno taį¹‡hā pahÄ«nā hoti ucchinnamÅ«lā tālāvatthukatā anabhāvaį¹…katā āyatiį¹ anuppādadhammā, ayaį¹ vuccati, mālukyaputta, ā€˜bhikkhu acchecchi taį¹‡haį¹, vivattayi saį¹yojanaį¹, sammā mānābhisamayā antamakāsi dukkhassāā€™ā€ti. That craving is given up by a mendicant, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, and unable to arise in the future. Then theyā€™re called a mendicant who has cut off craving, untied the fetters, and by rightly comprehending conceit has made an end of suffering.ā€

Atha kho āyasmā mālukyaputto bhagavatā iminā ovādena ovadito uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā padakkhiį¹‡aį¹ katvā pakkāmi. When Māluį¹…kyaputta had been given this advice by the Buddha, he got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.

Atha kho āyasmā mālukyaputto eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto viharanto nacirassevaā€”yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraį¹ā€”brahmacariyapariyosānaį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi. Then Māluį¹…kyaputta, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.

ā€œKhÄ«į¹‡Ä jāti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, nāparaį¹ itthattāyāā€ti abbhaƱƱāsi. He understood: ā€œRebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is nothing further for this place.ā€

AƱƱataro ca panāyasmā mālukyaputto arahataį¹ ahosÄ«ti. And Venerable Māluį¹…kyaputta became one of the perfected.
