āPaƱcimÄni, bhikkhave, sekhabalÄni. āMendicants, there are these five powers of a trainee.
KatamÄni paƱca? What five?
SaddhÄbalaį¹, hirÄ«balaį¹, ottappabalaį¹, vÄ«riyabalaį¹, paƱƱÄbalaį¹. The powers of faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom.
KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, saddhÄbalaį¹? And what is the power of faith?
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathÄgatassa bodhiį¹: Itās when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized Oneās awakening:
āitipi so bhagavÄ arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho vijjÄcaraį¹asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasÄrathi satthÄ devamanussÄnaį¹ buddho bhagavÄāti. āThat Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā
Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, saddhÄbalaį¹. This is called the power of faith.
KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, hirÄ«balaį¹? And what is the power of conscience?
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako hirÄ«mÄ hoti, hirÄ«yati kÄyaduccaritena vacÄ«duccaritena manoduccaritena, hirÄ«yati pÄpakÄnaį¹ akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ samÄpattiyÄ. Itās when a noble disciple has a conscience. Theyāre conscientious about bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and conscientious about having any bad, unskillful qualities.
Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, hirÄ«balaį¹. This is called the power of conscience.
KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, ottappabalaį¹? And what is the power of prudence?
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako ottappÄ« hoti, ottappati kÄyaduccaritena vacÄ«duccaritena manoduccaritena, ottappati pÄpakÄnaį¹ akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ samÄpattiyÄ. Itās when a noble disciple is prudent. Theyāre prudent when it comes to bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and prudent when it comes to acquiring any bad, unskillful qualities.
Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, ottappabalaį¹. This is called the power of prudence.
KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, vÄ«riyabalaį¹? And what is the power of energy?
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako ÄraddhavÄ«riyo viharati akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ pahÄnÄya, kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ upasampadÄya, thÄmavÄ daįø·haparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu. Itās when a noble disciple lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. Theyāre strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities.
Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, vÄ«riyabalaį¹. This is called the power of energy.
KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, paƱƱÄbalaį¹? And what is the power of wisdom?
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako paƱƱavÄ hoti udayatthagÄminiyÄ paƱƱÄya samannÄgato ariyÄya nibbedhikÄya sammÄ dukkhakkhayagÄminiyÄ. Itās when a noble disciple is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering.
Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, paƱƱÄbalaį¹. This is called the power of wisdom.
ImÄni kho, bhikkhave, paƱca sekhabalÄni. These are the five powers of a trainee.
TasmÄtiha, bhikkhave, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: So you should train like this:
āsaddhÄbalena samannÄgatÄ bhavissÄma sekhabalena, hirÄ«balena ā¦ ottappabalena ā¦ vÄ«riyabalena ā¦ paƱƱÄbalena samannÄgatÄ bhavissÄma sekhabalenÄāti. āWe will have the traineeās powers of faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom.ā
EvaƱhi kho, bhikkhave, sikkhitabbanāti. Thatās how you should train.ā
