Kāmasutta Sensual Pleasures

ā€œYebhuyyena, bhikkhave, sattā kāmesu laįø·itā. ā€œMendicants, sentient beings are mostly charmed by sensual pleasures.

Asitabyābhaį¹…giį¹, bhikkhave, kulaputto ohāya agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajito hoti, ā€˜saddhāpabbajito kulaputtoā€™ti alaį¹vacanāya. When a gentleman has abandoned the scythe and flail and gone forth from the lay life to homelessness, theyā€™re qualified to be called ā€˜a faithful renunciate from a good familyā€™.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Labbhā, bhikkhave, yobbanena kāmā te ca kho yādisā vā tādisā vā. Because a youth can get sensual pleasures of this kind or that.

Ye ca, bhikkhave, hÄ«nā kāmā ye ca majjhimā kāmā ye ca paį¹‡Ä«tā kāmā, sabbe kāmā ā€˜kāmāā€™tveva saį¹…khaį¹ gacchanti. Now, all sensual pleasures are just reckoned as ā€˜sensual pleasuresā€™, regardless of whether theyā€™re inferior, average, or superior.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, daharo kumāro mando uttānaseyyako dhātiyā pamādamanvāya kaį¹­į¹­haį¹ vā kaį¹­halaį¹ vā mukhe āhareyya. Suppose there was a little baby boy who, because of his nursemaidā€™s negligence, puts a stick or stone in his mouth.

Tamenaį¹ dhāti sÄ«ghaį¹ sÄ«ghaį¹ manasi kareyya; The nursemaid would very quickly notice

sÄ«ghaį¹ sÄ«ghaį¹ manasi karitvā sÄ«ghaį¹ sÄ«ghaį¹ āhareyya. and try to take it out.

No ce sakkuį¹‡eyya sÄ«ghaį¹ sÄ«ghaį¹ āharituį¹, vāmena hatthena sÄ«saį¹ pariggahetvā dakkhiį¹‡ena hatthena vaį¹…kaį¹…guliį¹ karitvā salohitampi āhareyya. If that didnā€™t work, sheā€™d cradle his head with her left hand, and take it out using a hooked finger of her right hand, even if it drew blood.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

ā€˜Atthesā, bhikkhave, kumārassa vihesā; I admit sheā€™d know, ā€˜This will distress the child,

nesā natthÄ«ā€™ti vadāmi. thereā€™s no denying.ā€™

Karaį¹‡Ä«yaƱca kho etaį¹, bhikkhave, dhātiyā atthakāmāya hitesiniyā anukampikāya, anukampaį¹ upādāya. Still, it should be done by a nursemaid who wants whatā€™s best for him, out of kindness and sympathy.

Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, so kumāro vuddho hoti alaį¹paƱƱo, anapekkhā dāni, bhikkhave, dhāti tasmiį¹ kumāre hoti: And when the boy has grown up and has enough sense, his nursemaid would not worry about him, thinking:

ā€˜attagutto dāni kumāro nālaį¹ pamādāyāā€™ti. ā€˜The boy can look after himself. He wonā€™t be negligent.ā€™

Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, yāvakÄ«vaƱca bhikkhuno saddhāya akataį¹ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, hiriyā akataį¹ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, ottappena akataį¹ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, vÄ«riyena akataį¹ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, paƱƱāya akataį¹ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, anurakkhitabbo tāva me so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu hoti. In the same way, I still need to look after a mendicant who hasnā€™t finished developing faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities.

Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno saddhāya kataį¹ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, hiriyā kataį¹ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, ottappena kataį¹ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, vÄ«riyena kataį¹ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, paƱƱāya kataį¹ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, anapekkho dānāhaį¹, bhikkhave, tasmiį¹ bhikkhusmiį¹ homi: But when a mendicant has finished developing faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities, I need not be concerned, thinking:

ā€˜attagutto dāni bhikkhu nālaį¹ pamādāyāā€™ā€ti. ā€˜They can look after themselves. They wonā€™t be negligent.ā€™ā€
