ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, balāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these five powers.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

Saddhābalaį¹, vÄ«riyabalaį¹, satibalaį¹, samādhibalaį¹, paƱƱābalaį¹. The powers of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, saddhābalaį¹? And what is the power of faith?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiį¹: Itā€™s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized Oneā€™s awakening:

ā€˜itipi so bhagavā arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraį¹‡asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaį¹ buddho bhagavāā€™ti. ā€˜That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā€™

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, saddhābalaį¹. This is called the power of faith.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, vÄ«riyabalaį¹? And what is the power of energy?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako āraddhavÄ«riyo viharati akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ pahānāya, kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ upasampadāya thāmavā daįø·haparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu. Itā€™s when a noble disciple lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. Theyā€™re strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, vÄ«riyabalaį¹. This is called the power of energy.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, satibalaį¹? And what is the power of mindfulness?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako satimā hoti paramena satinepakkena samannāgato, cirakatampi cirabhāsitampi saritā anussaritā. Itā€™s when a noble disciple is mindful. They have utmost mindfulness and alertness, and can remember and recall what was said and done long ago.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, satibalaį¹. This is called the power of mindfulness.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, samādhibalaį¹? And what is the power of immersion?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaį¹ savicāraį¹ vivekajaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ paį¹­hamaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati; Itā€™s when a noble disciple, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected.

vitakkavicārānaį¹ vÅ«pasamā ajjhattaį¹ sampasādanaį¹ cetaso ekodibhāvaį¹ avitakkaį¹ avicāraį¹ samādhijaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ dutiyaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati; As the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, they enter and remain in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and mind at one, without placing the mind and keeping it connected.

pÄ«tiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati sato ca sampajāno sukhaƱca kāyena paį¹­isaį¹vedeti yaį¹ taį¹ ariyā ācikkhanti: ā€˜upekkhako satimā sukhavihārÄ«ā€™ti tatiyaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati; And with the fading away of rapture, they enter and remain in the third absorption, where they meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally experiencing the bliss of which the noble ones declare, ā€˜Equanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.ā€™

sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva somanassadomanassānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamā adukkhamasukhaį¹ upekkhāsatipārisuddhiį¹ catutthaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati. Giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, they enter and remain in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, samādhibalaį¹. This is called the power of immersion.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, paƱƱābalaį¹? And what is the power of wisdom?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako paƱƱavā hoti udayatthagāminiyā paƱƱāya samannāgato ariyāya nibbedhikāya sammā dukkhakkhayagāminiyā. Itā€™s when a noble disciple is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, paƱƱābalaį¹. This is called the power of wisdom.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱca balānÄ«ā€ti. These are the five powers.ā€
