Vimuttāyatanasutta Opportunities for Freedom

ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, vimuttāyatanāni yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttaį¹ vā cittaį¹ vimuccati, aparikkhÄ«į¹‡Ä vā āsavā parikkhayaį¹ gacchanti, ananuppattaį¹ vā anuttaraį¹ yogakkhemaį¹ anupāpuį¹‡Äti. ā€œMendicants, there are these five opportunities for freedom. If a mendicant stays diligent, keen, and resolute at these times, their mind is freed, their defilements are ended, and they arrive at the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno satthā dhammaį¹ deseti aƱƱataro vā garuį¹­į¹­hāniyo sabrahmacārÄ«. Firstly, the Teacher or a respected spiritual companion teaches Dhamma to a mendicant.

Yathā yathā, bhikkhave, tassa bhikkhuno satthā dhammaį¹ deseti, aƱƱataro vā garuį¹­į¹­hāniyo sabrahmacārÄ« tathā tathā so tasmiį¹ dhamme atthapaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« ca hoti dhammapaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« ca. In whatever way the Teacher or a respected spiritual companion teaches Dhamma to that mendicant, they always feel inspired by the meaning and the teaching in that Dhamma.

Tassa atthapaį¹­isaį¹vedino dhammapaį¹­isaį¹vedino pāmojjaį¹ jāyati. Feeling inspired, joy springs up.

Pamuditassa pīti jāyati. Being joyful, rapture springs up.

Pītimanassa kāyo passambhati. When the mind is full of rapture, the body becomes tranquil.

Passaddhakāyo sukhaį¹ vedeti. When the body is tranquil, one feels bliss.

Sukhino cittaį¹ samādhiyati. And when blissful, the mind becomes immersed in samādhi.

Idaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­hamaį¹ vimuttāyatanaį¹ yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttaį¹ vā cittaį¹ vimuccati, aparikkhÄ«į¹‡Ä vā āsavā parikkhayaį¹ gacchanti, ananuppattaį¹ vā anuttaraį¹ yogakkhemaį¹ anupāpuį¹‡Äti. This is the first opportunity for freedom. If a mendicant stays diligent, keen, and resolute at this time, their mind is freed, their defilements are ended, and they arrive at the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno na heva kho satthā dhammaį¹ deseti, aƱƱataro vā garuį¹­į¹­hāniyo sabrahmacārÄ«, api ca kho yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ vitthārena paresaį¹ deseti. Furthermore, it may be that neither the Teacher nor a respected spiritual companion teaches Dhamma to a mendicant. But the mendicant teaches Dhamma in detail to others as they learned and memorized it.

Yathā yathā, bhikkhave, bhikkhu yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ vitthārena paresaį¹ deseti tathā tathā so tasmiį¹ dhamme atthapaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« ca hoti dhammapaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« ca. In whatever way that mendicant teaches Dhamma in detail to others as they learned and memorized it, they always feel inspired by the meaning and the teaching in that Dhamma.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno na heva kho satthā dhammaį¹ deseti, aƱƱataro vā garuį¹­į¹­hāniyo sabrahmacārÄ«, nāpi yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ vitthārena paresaį¹ deseti, nāpi yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ vitthārena sajjhāyaį¹ karoti; Furthermore, it may be that neither the Teacher nor ā€¦ the mendicant teaches Dhamma ā€¦ nor does the mendicant recite the teaching.

api ca kho yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ cetasā anuvitakketi anuvicāreti manasānupekkhati. But the mendicant thinks about and considers the teaching in their heart, examining it with the mind as they learned and memorized it.

Yathā yathā, bhikkhave, bhikkhu yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ cetasā anuvitakketi anuvicāreti manasānupekkhati tathā tathā so tasmiį¹ dhamme atthapaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« ca hoti dhammapaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« ca. In whatever way that mendicant thinks about and considers the teaching in their heart, examining it with the mind as they learned and memorized it, they always feel inspired by the meaning and the teaching in that Dhamma.

Tassa atthapaį¹­isaį¹vedino dhammapaį¹­isaį¹vedino pāmojjaį¹ jāyati. Feeling inspired, joy springs up.

This is the fourth opportunity for freedom. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno na heva kho satthā dhammaį¹ deseti aƱƱataro vā garuį¹­į¹­hāniyo sabrahmacārÄ«, nāpi yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ vitthārena paresaį¹ deseti, nāpi yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ vitthārena sajjhāyaį¹ karoti, nāpi yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ cetasā anuvitakketi anuvicāreti manasānupekkhati; Furthermore, it may be that neither the Teacher nor ā€¦ the mendicant teaches Dhamma ā€¦ nor does the mendicant recite the teaching ā€¦ or think about it.

api ca khvassa aƱƱataraį¹ samādhinimittaį¹ suggahitaį¹ hoti sumanasikataį¹ sÅ«padhāritaį¹ suppaį¹­ividdhaį¹ paƱƱāya. But a meditation subject as a basis of immersion is properly grasped, focused on, borne in mind, and comprehended with wisdom.

Yathā yathā, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno aƱƱataraį¹ samādhinimittaį¹ suggahitaį¹ hoti sumanasikataį¹ sÅ«padhāritaį¹ suppaį¹­ividdhaį¹ paƱƱāya tathā tathā so tasmiį¹ dhamme atthapaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« ca hoti dhammapaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« ca. In whatever way a mendicantā€™s meditation subject as a basis of immersion is properly grasped, focused on, borne in mind, and comprehended with wisdom, they always feel inspired by the meaning and the teaching in that Dhamma.

Tassa atthapaį¹­isaį¹vedino dhammapaį¹­isaį¹vedino pāmojjaį¹ jāyati. Feeling inspired, joy springs up.

Pamuditassa pīti jāyati. Being joyful, rapture springs up.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱca vimuttāyatanāni yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttaį¹ vā cittaį¹ vimuccati, aparikkhÄ«į¹‡Ä vā āsavā parikkhayaį¹ gacchanti, ananuppattaį¹ vā anuttaraį¹ yogakkhemaį¹ anupāpuį¹‡ÄtÄ«ā€ti. These are the five opportunities for freedom. If a mendicant stays diligent, keen, and resolute at these times, their mind is freed, their defilements are ended, and they arrive at the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.ā€
