Saddhasutta Faith

ā€œPaƱcime, bhikkhave, saddhe kulaputte ānisaį¹sā. ā€œMendicants, a faithful gentleman gets five benefits.

Katame paƱca? What five?

Ye te, bhikkhave, loke santo sappurisā te saddhaƱƱeva paį¹­hamaį¹ anukampantā anukampanti, no tathā assaddhaį¹; The true persons in the world show sympathy first to the faithful, not so much to the unfaithful.

saddhaƱƱeva paį¹­hamaį¹ upasaį¹…kamantā upasaį¹…kamanti, no tathā assaddhaį¹; They first approach the faithful, not so much the unfaithful.

saddhaƱƱeva paį¹­hamaį¹ paį¹­iggaį¹‡hantā paį¹­iggaį¹‡hanti, no tathā assaddhaį¹; They first receive alms from the faithful, not so much the unfaithful.

saddhaƱƱeva paį¹­hamaį¹ dhammaį¹ desentā desenti, no tathā assaddhaį¹; They first teach Dhamma to the faithful, not so much the unfaithful.

saddho kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, the faithful are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, paƱca saddhe kulaputte ānisaį¹sā. A faithful gentleman gets these five benefits.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, subhÅ«miyaį¹ catumahāpathe mahānigrodho samantā pakkhÄ«naį¹ paį¹­isaraį¹‡aį¹ hoti; Suppose there was a great banyan tree at a level crossroads. It would become a refuge for birds from all around.

evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, saddho kulaputto bahuno janassa paį¹­isaraį¹‡aį¹ hoti bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bhikkhunÄ«naį¹ upāsakānaį¹ upāsikānanti. In the same way, a faithful gentleman becomes a refuge for many peopleā€”monks, nuns, laywomen, and laymen.

Sākhāpattaphalūpeto, With its branches, leaves, and fruit,

khandhimāva mahādumo; a great tree with its strong trunk,

Mūlavā phalasampanno, firmly-rooted and fruit-bearing,

patiį¹­į¹­hā hoti pakkhinaį¹. supports many birds.

Manorame āyatane, Itā€™s a lovely place,

sevanti naį¹ vihaį¹…gamā; frequented by the sky-soarers.

Chāyaį¹ chāyatthikā yanti, Those that need shade go in the shade,

phalatthā phalabhojino. those that need fruit enjoy the fruit.

Tatheva sÄ«lasampannaį¹, So too, a faithful individual

saddhaį¹ purisapuggalaį¹; is perfect in ethics,

Nivātavuttiį¹ atthaddhaį¹, humble and amenable,

sorataį¹ sakhilaį¹ muduį¹. sweet, courteous, and tender.

Vītarāgā vītadosā, Those free of greed, freed of hate,

vītamohā anāsavā; free of delusion, undefiled,

PuƱƱakkhettāni lokasmiį¹, fields of merit for the world,

sevanti tādisaį¹ naraį¹. associate with such a person.

Te tassa dhammaį¹ desenti, They teach them the Dhamma,

SabbadukkhāpanÅ«danaį¹; that dispels all suffering.

Yaį¹ so dhammaį¹ idhaƱƱāya, Having understood this teaching,

Parinibbāti anāsavoā€ti. the undefiled one is fully extinguished.ā€
