Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena sako upajjhÄyo tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ sakaį¹ upajjhÄyaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to his own mentor, and said,
āetarahi me, bhante, madhurakajÄto ceva kÄyo, disÄ ca me na pakkhÄyanti, dhammÄ ca maį¹ nappaį¹ibhanti, thinamiddhaƱca me cittaį¹ pariyÄdÄya tiį¹į¹hati, anabhirato ca brahmacariyaį¹ carÄmi, atthi ca me dhammesu vicikicchÄāti. āNow, sir, my body feels like itās drugged. Iām disorientated, the teachings donāt spring to mind, and dullness and drowsiness fill my mind. I lead the spiritual life dissatisfied, and have doubts about the teachings.ā

āayaį¹, bhante, bhikkhu evamÄha: āSir, this mendicant says this:
āetarahi me, bhante, madhurakajÄto ceva kÄyo, disÄ ca maį¹ na pakkhÄyanti, dhammÄ ca me nappaį¹ibhanti, thinamiddhaƱca me cittaį¹ pariyÄdÄya tiį¹į¹hati, anabhirato ca brahmacariyaį¹ carÄmi, atthi ca me dhammesu vicikicchÄāāti. āNow, sir, my body feels like itās drugged. Iām disorientated, the teachings donāt spring to mind, and dullness and drowsiness fill my mind. I lead the spiritual life dissatisfied, and have doubts about the teachings.āā
āEvaƱhetaį¹, bhikkhu, hoti indriyesu aguttadvÄrassa, bhojane amattaƱƱuno, jÄgariyaį¹ ananuyuttassa, avipassakassa kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹, pubbarattÄpararattaį¹ bodhipakkhiyÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ bhÄvanÄnuyogaį¹ ananuyuttassa viharato, yaį¹ madhurakajÄto ceva kÄyo hoti, disÄ cassa na pakkhÄyanti, dhammÄ ca taį¹ nappaį¹ibhanti, thinamiddhaƱcassa cittaį¹ pariyÄdÄya tiį¹į¹hati, anabhirato ca brahmacariyaį¹ carati, hoti cassa dhammesu vicikicchÄ. āThatās how it is, mendicant, when your sense doors are unguarded, you eat too much, youāre not dedicated to wakefulness, youāre unable to discern skillful qualities, and you donāt pursue the development of the qualities that lead to awakening in the evening and toward dawn. Your body feels like itās drugged. Youāre disorientated, the teachings donāt spring to mind, and dullness and drowsiness fill your mind. You lead the spiritual life dissatisfied, and have doubts about the teachings.
TasmÄtiha te, bhikkhu, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: So you should train like this:
āindriyesu guttadvÄro bhavissÄmi, bhojane mattaĆ±Ć±Å«, jÄgariyaį¹ anuyutto, vipassako kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹, pubbarattÄpararattaį¹ bodhipakkhiyÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ bhÄvanÄnuyogaį¹ anuyutto viharissÄmÄ«āti. āI will guard my sense doors, eat in moderation, be dedicated to wakefulness, discern skillful qualities, and pursue the development of the qualities that lead to awakening in the evening and toward dawn.ā
EvaƱhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbanāti. Thatās how you should train.ā
Atha kho so bhikkhu bhagavatÄ iminÄ ovÄdena ovadito uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ pakkÄmi. When that mendicant had been given this advice by the Buddha, he got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.
Atha kho so bhikkhu eko vÅ«pakaį¹į¹ho appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto viharanto nacirassevaāyassatthÄya kulaputtÄ sammadeva agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraį¹ābrahmacariyapariyosÄnaį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja vihÄsi. Then that mendicant, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.
āKhÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄāti abbhaƱƱÄsi. He understood: āRebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is nothing further for this place.ā
AƱƱataro pana so bhikkhu arahataį¹ ahosi. And that mendicant became one of the perfected.
Atha kho so bhikkhu arahattaį¹ patto yena sako upajjhÄyo tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ sakaį¹ upajjhÄyaį¹ etadavoca: When that mendicant had attained perfection, he went up to his own mentor, and said,
āetarahi me, bhante, na ceva madhurakajÄto kÄyo, disÄ ca me pakkhÄyanti, dhammÄ ca maį¹ paį¹ibhanti, thinamiddhaƱca me cittaį¹ na pariyÄdÄya tiį¹į¹hati, abhirato ca brahmacariyaį¹ carÄmi, natthi ca me dhammesu vicikicchÄāti. āNow, sir, my body doesnāt feel like itās drugged. Iām not disorientated, the teachings spring to mind, and dullness and drowsiness donāt fill my mind. I lead the spiritual life satisfied, and have no doubts about the teachings.ā

Your body doesnāt feel like itās drugged. Youāre not disorientated, the teachings spring to mind, and dullness and drowsiness donāt fill your mind. You lead the spiritual life satisfied, and have no doubts about the teachings.
TasmÄtiha vo, bhikkhave, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: So you should train like this:
