ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, į¹­hānāni abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhitabbāni itthiyā vā purisena vā gahaį¹­į¹­hena vā pabbajitena vā. ā€œMendicants, a woman or a man, a layperson or a renunciate should often review these five subjects.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

ā€˜Jarādhammomhi, jaraį¹ anatÄ«toā€™ti abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹ itthiyā vā purisena vā gahaį¹­į¹­hena vā pabbajitena vā. ā€˜I am liable to grow old, I am not exempt from old age.ā€™ A woman or a man, a layperson or a renunciate should often review this.

ā€˜Kammassakomhi, kammadāyādo kammayoni kammabandhu kammapaį¹­isaraį¹‡o. ā€˜I am the owner of my deeds and heir to my deeds. Deeds are my womb, my relative, and my refuge.

Yaį¹ kammaį¹ karissāmiā€”kalyāį¹‡aį¹ vā pāpakaį¹ vāā€”I shall be the heir of whatever deeds I do, whether good or bad.ā€™

Atthi, bhikkhave, sattānaį¹ yobbane yobbanamado, yena madena mattā kāyena duccaritaį¹ caranti, vācāya duccaritaį¹ caranti, manasā duccaritaį¹ caranti. There are sentient beings who, intoxicated with the vanity of youth, do bad things by way of body, speech, and mind.

Tassa taį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhato yo yobbane yobbanamado so sabbaso vā pahÄ«yati tanu vā pana hoti. Reviewing this subject often, they entirely give up the vanity of youth, or at least reduce it.

kalyāį¹‡aį¹ vā pāpakaį¹ vāā€”tassa dāyādo bhavissāmÄ«ā€™ti abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹ itthiyā vā purisena vā gahaį¹­į¹­hena vā pabbajitena vā? I shall be the heir of whatever deeds I do, whether good or badā€™?

Atthi, bhikkhave, sattānaį¹ kāyaduccaritaį¹ vacÄ«duccaritaį¹ manoduccaritaį¹. There are sentient beings who do bad things by way of body, speech, and mind.

Tassa taį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhato sabbaso vā duccaritaį¹ pahÄ«yati tanu vā pana hoti. Reviewing this subject often, they entirely give up bad conduct, or at least reduce it.

Idaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, atthavasaį¹ paį¹­icca ā€˜kammassakomhi, kammadāyādo kammayoni kammabandhu kammapaį¹­isaraį¹‡o, yaį¹ kammaį¹ karissāmiā€”This is the advantage for a woman or a man, a layperson or a renunciate of often reviewing like this: ā€˜I am the owner of my deeds and heir to my deeds. Deeds are my womb, my relative, and my refuge.

kalyāį¹‡aį¹ vā pāpakaį¹ vāā€”I shall be the heir of whatever deeds I do, whether good or bad.ā€™

Sa kho so, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako iti paį¹­isaƱcikkhati: Then that noble disciple reflects:

ā€˜na kho ahaƱƱeveko jarādhammo jaraį¹ anatÄ«to, atha kho yāvatā sattānaį¹ āgati gati cuti upapatti sabbe sattā jarādhammā jaraį¹ anatÄ«tāā€™ti. ā€˜Itā€™s not just me who is liable to grow old, not being exempt from old age. For all sentient beings grow old according to their nature, as long as they come and go, pass away and are reborn.ā€™

Tassa taį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhato maggo saƱjāyati. When they review this subject often, the path is born in them.

So taį¹ maggaį¹ āsevati bhāveti bahulÄ«karoti. They cultivate, develop, and make much of it.

Tassa taį¹ maggaį¹ āsevato bhāvayato bahulÄ«karoto saį¹yojanāni sabbaso pahÄ«yanti anusayā byantÄ«honti. By doing so, they give up the fetters and eliminate the underlying tendencies.

ā€˜Na kho ahaƱƱeveko byādhidhammo byādhiį¹ anatÄ«to, atha kho yāvatā sattānaį¹ āgati gati cuti upapatti sabbe sattā byādhidhammā byādhiį¹ anatÄ«tāā€™ti. ā€˜Itā€™s not just me who is liable to get sick, not being exempt from sickness. For all sentient beings get sick according to their nature, as long as they come and go, pass away and are reborn.ā€™

Tassa taį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhato maggo saƱjāyati. When they review this subject often, the path is born in them.

So taį¹ maggaį¹ āsevati bhāveti bahulÄ«karoti. They cultivate, develop, and make much of it.

For all sentient beings must be parted and separated from all they hold dear and beloved, as long as they come and go, pass away and are reborn.ā€™

Tassa taį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhato maggo saƱjāyati. When they review this subject often, the path is born in them.

So taį¹ maggaį¹ āsevati bhāveti bahulÄ«karoti. They cultivate, develop, and make much of it.

For all sentient beings shall be the owners of their deeds and heirs to their deeds, as long as they come and go, pass away and are reborn.ā€™

So taį¹ maggaį¹ āsevati bhāveti bahulÄ«karoti. They cultivate, develop, and make much of it.

Byādhidhammā jarādhammā, For others, sickness is natural,

atho maraį¹‡adhammino; and so are old age and death.

Yathā dhammā tathā sattā, Though this is how their nature is,

jigucchanti puthujjanā. ordinary people feel disgusted.

AhaƱce taį¹ jiguccheyyaį¹, If I were to be disgusted

evaį¹ dhammesu pāį¹‡isu; with creatures whose nature is such,

Na metaį¹ patirÅ«passa, it would not be appropriate for me,

mama evaį¹ vihārino. since my life is just the same.

Sohaį¹ evaį¹ viharanto, Living in such a way,

Ʊatvā dhammaį¹ nirÅ«padhiį¹; I understood the truth without attachments.

Ārogye yobbanasmiƱca, I mastered all vanitiesā€”

jīvitasmiƱca ye madā. of health, of youth,

Sabbe made abhibhosmi, and even of lifeā€”

Nekkhammaį¹ daį¹­į¹­hu khemato; seeing renunciation as sanctuary.

Tassa me ahu ussāho, Zeal sprang up in me

Nibbānaį¹ abhipassato. as I looked to extinguishment.

Nāhaį¹ bhabbo etarahi, Now Iā€™m unable

Kāmāni paį¹­isevituį¹; to indulge in sensual pleasures;

Anivatti bhavissāmi, thereā€™s no turning back,

Brahmacariyaparāyaį¹‡oā€ti. Iā€™m committed to the spiritual life.ā€
