Idha, bhikkhu, bhikkhu dhammaį¹ pariyāpuį¹‡Ätiā€”Take a mendicant who memorizes the teachingā€”

suttaį¹, geyyaį¹, veyyākaraį¹‡aį¹, gāthaį¹, udānaį¹, itivuttakaį¹, jātakaį¹, abbhutadhammaį¹, vedallaį¹; statements, mixed prose & verse, discussions, verses, inspired exclamations, legends, stories of past lives, amazing stories, and elaborations.

uttari cassa paƱƱāya atthaį¹ pajānāti. And they do understand the higher meaning.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, bhikkhu dhammavihārÄ« hoti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant is one who lives by the teaching.

Iti kho, bhikkhu, desito mayā pariyattibahulo, desito paƱƱattibahulo, desito sajjhāyabahulo, desito vitakkabahulo, desito dhammavihārÄ«. So, mendicant, Iā€™ve taught you the one who studies a lot, the one who advocates a lot, the one who recites a lot, the one who thinks a lot, and the one who lives by the teaching.

Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, satthārā karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ sāvakānaį¹ hitesinā anukampakena anukampaį¹ upādāya, kataį¹ vo taį¹ mayā. Out of sympathy, Iā€™ve done what a teacher should do who wants whatā€™s best for their disciples.

Etāni, bhikkhu, rukkhamÅ«lāni, etāni suƱƱāgārāni. Jhāyatha bhikkhu, mā pamādattha, mā pacchā vippaį¹isārino ahuvattha. Ayaį¹ vo amhākaį¹ anusāsanÄ«ā€ti. Here are these roots of trees, and here are these empty huts. Practice absorption, mendicant! Donā€™t be negligent! Donā€™t regret it later! This is my instruction to you.ā€
