Sutadharasutta Remembering What Youā€™ve Learned

ā€œPaƱcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu ānāpānassatiį¹ āsevanto nacirasseva akuppaį¹ paį¹­ivijjhati. ā€œMendicants, a mendicant cultivating mindfulness of breathing who has five things will soon penetrate the unshakable.

Katamehi paƱcahi? What five?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu appaį¹­į¹­ho hoti appakicco subharo susantoso jÄ«vitaparikkhāresu; Itā€™s when a mendicant has few requirements and duties, and is unburdensome and contented with lifeā€™s necessities.

appāhāro hoti anodarikattaį¹ anuyutto; They eat little, not devoted to filling their stomach.

appamiddho hoti jāgariyaį¹ anuyutto; They are rarely drowsy, and are dedicated to wakefulness.

bahussuto hoti sutadharo sutasannicayo, ye te dhammā ādikalyāį¹‡Ä majjhekalyāį¹‡Ä pariyosānakalyāį¹‡Ä sātthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹ kevalaparipuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ abhivadanti, tathārÅ«pāssa dhammā bahussutā honti dhātā vacasā paricitā manasānupekkhitā diį¹­į¹­hiyā suppaį¹­ividdhā; Theyā€™re very learned, remembering and keeping what theyā€™ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice thatā€™s entirely full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, rehearsing them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.

yathāvimuttaį¹ cittaį¹ paccavekkhati. They review the extent of their mindā€™s freedom.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, paƱcahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu ānāpānassatiį¹ āsevanto nacirasseva akuppaį¹ paį¹­ivijjhatÄ«ā€ti. A mendicant cultivating mindfulness of breathing who has these five things will soon penetrate the unshakable.ā€
