SÄ«hasutta The Lion

ā€œSÄ«ho, bhikkhave, migarājā sāyanhasamayaį¹ āsayā nikkhamati; ā€œMendicants, towards evening the lion, king of beasts, emerges from his den,

āsayā nikkhamitvā vijambhati; yawns,

vijambhitvā samantā catuddisaį¹ anuviloketi; looks all around the four quarters,

samantā catuddisaį¹ anuviloketvā tikkhattuį¹ sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati; and roars his lionā€™s roar three times.

tikkhattuį¹ sÄ«hanādaį¹ naditvā gocarāya pakkamati. Then he sets out on the hunt.

So hatthissa cepi pahāraį¹ deti, sakkaccaƱƱeva pahāraį¹ deti, no asakkaccaį¹; If he strikes an elephant, he does it carefully, not carelessly.

mahiį¹sassa cepi pahāraį¹ deti, sakkaccaƱƱeva pahāraį¹ deti, no asakkaccaį¹; If he strikes a buffalo ā€¦

gavassa cepi pahāraį¹ deti, sakkaccaƱƱeva pahāraį¹ deti, no asakkaccaį¹; a cow ā€¦

dÄ«pissa cepi pahāraį¹ deti, sakkaccaƱƱeva pahāraį¹ deti, no asakkaccaį¹; a leopard ā€¦

khuddakānaƱcepi pāį¹‡Änaį¹ pahāraį¹ deti antamaso sasabiįø·Ärānampi, sakkaccaƱƱeva pahāraį¹ deti, no asakkaccaį¹. or any smaller creaturesā€”even a hare or a catā€”he does it carefully, not carelessly.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

ā€˜Mā me yoggapatho nassāā€™ti. Thinking: ā€˜May I not lose my way.ā€™

SÄ«hoti kho, bhikkhave, tathāgatassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹ arahato sammāsambuddhassa. ā€˜Lionā€™ is a term for the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha.

Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, tathāgato parisāya dhammaį¹ deseti, idamassa hoti sÄ«hanādasmiį¹. When the Realized One teaches Dhamma to an assembly, this is his lionā€™s roar.

BhikkhÅ«naƱcepi, bhikkhave, tathāgato dhammaį¹ deseti, sakkaccaƱƱeva tathāgato dhammaį¹ deseti, no asakkaccaį¹; When the Realized One teaches the monks ā€¦

bhikkhunÄ«naƱcepi, bhikkhave, tathāgato dhammaį¹ deseti, sakkaccaƱƱeva tathāgato dhammaį¹ deseti, no asakkaccaį¹; nuns ā€¦

upāsakānaƱcepi, bhikkhave, tathāgato dhammaį¹ deseti, sakkaccaƱƱeva tathāgato dhammaį¹ deseti, no asakkaccaį¹; laymen ā€¦

upāsikānaƱcepi, bhikkhave, tathāgato dhammaį¹ deseti, sakkaccaƱƱeva tathāgato dhammaį¹ deseti, no asakkaccaį¹; laywomen ā€¦

puthujjanānaƱcepi, bhikkhave, tathāgato dhammaį¹ deseti antamaso annabhāranesādānampi, sakkaccaƱƱeva tathāgato dhammaį¹ deseti, no asakkaccaį¹. or ordinary peopleā€”even food-carriers and huntersā€”he teaches them carefully, not carelessly.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Dhammagaru, bhikkhave, tathāgato dhammagāravoā€ti. Because the Realized One has respect and reverence for the teaching.ā€
