Ānandasutta With Ānanda

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositārāme. At one time the Buddha was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaā€™s Monastery.

Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him,

ā€œKittāvatā nu kho, bhante, bhikkhu saį¹…ghe viharanto phāsuį¹ vihareyyāā€ti? ā€œSir, how could a mendicant live comfortably while staying in a monastic community?ā€

ā€œYato kho, ānanda, bhikkhu attanā sÄ«lasampanno hoti, no paraį¹ adhisÄ«le sampavattā; ā€œItā€™s when a mendicant is accomplished in their own ethical conduct, but they donā€™t urge others to be ethical.

ettāvatāpi kho, ānanda, bhikkhu saį¹…ghe viharanto phāsuį¹ vihareyyāā€ti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant could live comfortably while staying in a monastic community.ā€

ā€œSiyā pana, bhante, aƱƱopi pariyāyo yathā bhikkhu saį¹…ghe viharanto phāsuį¹ vihareyyāā€ti? ā€œBut sir, could there be another way for a mendicant to live comfortably while staying in a monastic community?ā€

ā€œSiyā, ānanda. ā€œThere could, Ānanda.

Yato kho, ānanda, bhikkhu attanā sÄ«lasampanno hoti, no paraį¹ adhisÄ«le sampavattā; Itā€™s when a mendicant is accomplished in their own ethical conduct, but they donā€™t urge others to be ethical.

attānupekkhÄ« ca hoti, no parānupekkhÄ«; And they watch themselves, but donā€™t watch others.

ettāvatāpi kho, ānanda, bhikkhu saį¹…ghe viharanto phāsuį¹ vihareyyāā€ti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant could live comfortably while staying in a monastic community.ā€

catunnaƱca jhānānaį¹ ābhicetasikānaį¹ diį¹­į¹­hadhammasukhavihārānaį¹ nikāmalābhÄ« hoti akicchalābhÄ« akasiralābhÄ«; And they get the four absorptionsā€”blissful meditations in this life that belong to the higher mindā€”when they want, without trouble or difficulty.

āsavānaƱca khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati; And they realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

ettāvatāpi kho, ānanda, bhikkhu saį¹…ghe viharanto phāsuį¹ vihareyya. Thatā€™s how a mendicant could live comfortably while staying in a monastic community.

Imamhā cāhaį¹, ānanda, phāsuvihārā aƱƱo phāsuvihāro uttaritaro vā paį¹‡Ä«tataro vā natthÄ«ti vadāmÄ«ā€ti. And I say that there is no better or finer way of living comfortably than this.ā€
