Änandasutta With Änanda
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositÄrÄme. At one time the Buddha was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaās Monastery.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ Änando yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ Änando bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Änanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him,
āKittÄvatÄ nu kho, bhante, bhikkhu saį¹
ghe viharanto phÄsuį¹ vihareyyÄāti? āSir, how could a mendicant live comfortably while staying in a monastic community?ā
āYato kho, Änanda, bhikkhu attanÄ sÄ«lasampanno hoti, no paraį¹ adhisÄ«le sampavattÄ; āItās when a mendicant is accomplished in their own ethical conduct, but they donāt urge others to be ethical.
ettÄvatÄpi kho, Änanda, bhikkhu saį¹
ghe viharanto phÄsuį¹ vihareyyÄāti. Thatās how a mendicant could live comfortably while staying in a monastic community.ā
āSiyÄ pana, bhante, aƱƱopi pariyÄyo yathÄ bhikkhu saį¹
ghe viharanto phÄsuį¹ vihareyyÄāti? āBut sir, could there be another way for a mendicant to live comfortably while staying in a monastic community?ā
āSiyÄ, Änanda. āThere could, Änanda.
Yato kho, Änanda, bhikkhu attanÄ sÄ«lasampanno hoti, no paraį¹ adhisÄ«le sampavattÄ; Itās when a mendicant is accomplished in their own ethical conduct, but they donāt urge others to be ethical.
attÄnupekkhÄ« ca hoti, no parÄnupekkhÄ«; And they watch themselves, but donāt watch others.

catunnaƱca jhÄnÄnaį¹ ÄbhicetasikÄnaį¹ diį¹į¹hadhammasukhavihÄrÄnaį¹ nikÄmalÄbhÄ« hoti akicchalÄbhÄ« akasiralÄbhÄ«; And they get the four absorptionsāblissful meditations in this life that belong to the higher mindāwhen they want, without trouble or difficulty.

And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

ghe viharanto phÄsuį¹ vihareyya. Thatās how a mendicant could live comfortably while staying in a monastic community.
ImamhÄ cÄhaį¹, Änanda, phÄsuvihÄrÄ aƱƱo phÄsuvihÄro uttaritaro vÄ paį¹Ä«tataro vÄ natthÄ«ti vadÄmÄ«āti. And I say that there is no better or finer way of living comfortably than this.ā
