AraƱƱasutta Wilderness
āPaƱcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu alaį¹ araƱƱavanapatthÄni pantÄni senÄsanÄni paį¹isevituį¹. āMendicants, when a mendicant has five qualities theyāre ready to frequent remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest.
Katamehi paƱcahi? What five?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sÄ«lavÄ hoti ā¦peā¦ samÄdÄya sikkhati sikkhÄpadesu; Itās when a mendicant is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules theyāve undertaken.
bahussuto hoti ā¦peā¦ diį¹į¹hiyÄ suppaį¹ividdhÄ; Theyāre very learned, remembering and keeping what theyāve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice thatās totally full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reciting them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.
ÄraddhavÄ«riyo viharati thÄmavÄ daįø·haparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu; They live with energy roused up. Theyāre strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities.
catunnaį¹ jhÄnÄnaį¹ ÄbhicetasikÄnaį¹ diį¹į¹hadhammasukhavihÄrÄnaį¹ nikÄmalÄbhÄ« hoti akicchalÄbhÄ« akasiralÄbhÄ«; They get the four absorptionsāblissful meditations in this life that belong to the higher mindāwhen they want, without trouble or difficulty.
ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄ anÄsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱÄvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharati. They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.
Imehi kho, bhikkhave, paƱcahi dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu alaį¹ araƱƱavanapatthÄni pantÄni senÄsanÄni paį¹isevitunāti. When a mendicant has these five qualities theyāre ready to frequent remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest.ā
