Dutiyasaddhammasammosasutta The Decline of the True Teaching (2nd)

ā€œPaƱcime, bhikkhave, dhammā saddhammassa sammosāya antaradhānāya saį¹vattanti. ā€œMendicants, these five things lead to the decline and disappearance of the true teaching.

Katame paƱca? What five?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« dhammaį¹ na pariyāpuį¹‡antiā€”Itā€™s when the mendicants donā€™t memorize the teachingā€”

suttaį¹, geyyaį¹, veyyākaraį¹‡aį¹, gāthaį¹, udānaį¹, itivuttakaį¹, jātakaį¹, abbhutadhammaį¹, vedallaį¹. statements, mixed prose & verse, discussions, verses, inspired exclamations, legends, stories of past lives, amazing stories, and elaborations.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­hamo dhammo saddhammassa sammosāya antaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the first thing that leads to the decline and disappearance of the true teaching.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ na vitthārena paresaį¹ desenti. Furthermore, the mendicants donā€™t explain the teaching in detail to others as they learned and memorized it.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, dutiyo dhammo saddhammassa sammosāya antaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the second thing ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ na vitthārena paraį¹ vācenti. Furthermore, the mendicants donā€™t make others recite the teaching in detail as they learned and memorized it.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, tatiyo dhammo saddhammassa sammosāya antaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the third thing ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ na vitthārena sajjhāyaį¹ karonti. Furthermore, the mendicants donā€™t recite the teaching in detail as they learned and memorized it.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, catuttho dhammo saddhammassa sammosāya antaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the fourth thing ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ na cetasā anuvitakkenti anuvicārenti manasānupekkhanti. Furthermore, the mendicants donā€™t think about and consider the teaching in their hearts, examining it with their minds as they learned and memorized it.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paƱcamo dhammo saddhammassa sammosāya antaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the fifth thing that leads to the decline and disappearance of the true teaching.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, paƱca dhammā saddhammassa sammosāya antaradhānāya saį¹vattanti. These five things lead to the decline and disappearance of the true teaching.

PaƱcime, bhikkhave, dhammā saddhammassa į¹­hitiyā asammosāya anantaradhānāya saį¹vattanti. These five things lead to the continuation, persistence, and enduring of the true teaching.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, dutiyo dhammo saddhammassa į¹­hitiyā asammosāya anantaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the second thing ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ vitthārena paraį¹ vācenti. Furthermore, the mendicants make others recite the teaching in detail as they learned and memorized it.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, catuttho dhammo saddhammassa į¹­hitiyā asammosāya anantaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the fourth thing ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ cetasā anuvitakkenti anuvicārenti manasānupekkhanti. Furthermore, the mendicants think about and consider the teaching in their hearts, examining it with their minds as they learned and memorized it.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paƱcamo dhammo saddhammassa į¹­hitiyā asammosāya anantaradhānāya saį¹vattati. This is the fifth thing that leads to the continuation, persistence, and enduring of the true teaching.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, paƱca dhammā saddhammassa į¹­hitiyā asammosāya anantaradhānāya saį¹vattantÄ«ā€ti. These five things lead to the continuation, persistence, and enduring of the true teaching.ā€
