PaƱhapucchÄsutta Asking Questions
Tatra kho ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi ā¦peā¦ āyo hi koci, Ävuso, paraį¹ paƱhaį¹ pucchati, sabbo so paƱcahi į¹hÄnehi, etesaį¹ vÄ aƱƱatarena. There Venerable SÄriputta addressed the mendicants: ā¦ āWhoever asks a question of another, does so for one or other of these five reasons.
Katamehi paƱcahi? What five?
MandattÄ momÅ«hattÄ paraį¹ paƱhaį¹ pucchati, pÄpiccho icchÄpakato paraį¹ paƱhaį¹ pucchati, paribhavaį¹ paraį¹ paƱhaį¹ pucchati, aƱƱÄtukÄmo paraį¹ paƱhaį¹ pucchati, atha vÄ panevaį¹citto paraį¹ paƱhaį¹ pucchati: Someone asks a question of another from stupidity and folly. Or they ask from corrupt wishes, being of wishful temperament. Or they ask in order to disparage. Or they ask wanting to understand. Or they ask with the thought,
āsace me paƱhaį¹ puį¹į¹ho sammadeva byÄkarissati iccetaį¹ kusalaį¹, no ce me paƱhaį¹ puį¹į¹ho sammadeva byÄkarissati ahamassa sammadeva byÄkarissÄmÄ«āti. āIf they correctly answer the question I ask itās good. If not, Iāll correctly answer it for them.ā
Yo hi koci, Ävuso, paraį¹ paƱhaį¹ pucchati, sabbo so imehi paƱcahi į¹hÄnehi, etesaį¹ vÄ aƱƱatarena. Whoever asks a question of another, does so for one or other of these five reasons.
Ahaį¹ kho panÄvuso, evaį¹citto paraį¹ paƱhaį¹ pucchÄmi: As for myself, I ask with the thought,
āsace me paƱhaį¹ puį¹į¹ho sammadeva byÄkarissati iccetaį¹ kusalaį¹, no ce me paƱhaį¹ puį¹į¹ho sammadeva byÄkarissati, ahamassa sammadeva byÄkarissÄmÄ«āāti. āIf they correctly answer the question I ask itās good. If not, Iāll correctly answer it for them.āā
