Khippanisantisutta Quick-witted
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ Änando yenÄyasmÄ sÄriputto tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ ÄyasmatÄ sÄriputtena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then Venerable Änanda went up to Venerable SÄriputta, and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ Änando Äyasmantaį¹ sÄriputtaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to him:
āKittÄvatÄ nu kho, Ävuso sÄriputta, bhikkhu khippanisanti ca hoti, kusalesu dhammesu suggahitaggÄhÄ« ca, bahuƱca gaį¹hÄti, gahitaƱcassa nappamussatÄ«āti? āReverend SÄriputta, how are we to define a mendicant who is quick-witted when it comes to skillful teachings, who learns well, learns much, and does not forget what theyāve learned?ā
āÄyasmÄ kho Änando bahussuto. āWell, Venerable Änanda, youāre very learned.
Paį¹ibhÄtu Äyasmantaį¹yeva Änandanāti. Why donāt you clarify this yourself?ā
āTenahÄvuso sÄriputta, suį¹Ähi, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. āWell then, Reverend SÄriputta, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvamÄvusoāti kho ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto Äyasmato Änandassa paccassosi. āYes, reverend,ā SÄriputta replied.
ÄyasmÄ Änando etadavoca: Venerable Änanda said this:
āIdhÄvuso sÄriputta, bhikkhu atthakusalo ca hoti, dhammakusalo ca, byaƱjanakusalo ca, niruttikusalo ca, pubbÄparakusalo ca. āItās when a mendicant is skilled in the meaning, skilled in the teaching, skilled in terminology, skilled in phrasing, and skilled in sequence.
EttÄvatÄ kho, Ävuso sÄriputta, bhikkhu khippanisanti ca hoti kusalesu dhammesu, suggahitaggÄhÄ« ca, bahuƱca gaį¹hÄti, gahitaƱcassa nappamussatÄ«āti. That is how to define a mendicant who is quick-witted when it comes to skillful teachings, who learns well, learns much, and does not forget what theyāve learned.ā
āAcchariyaį¹, Ävuso, abbhutaį¹, Ävuso. āItās incredible, itās amazing!
YÄva subhÄsitaƱcidaį¹ ÄyasmatÄ Änandena. How well this was said by Venerable Änanda!
Imehi ca mayaį¹ paƱcahi dhammehi samannÄgataį¹ Äyasmantaį¹ Änandaį¹ dhÄrema: And we will remember Venerable Änanda as someone who has these five qualities:
āÄyasmÄ Änando atthakusalo dhammakusalo byaƱjanakusalo niruttikusalo pubbÄparakusaloāāti. āReverend Änanda is skilled in the meaning, skilled in the teaching, skilled in terminology, skilled in phrasing, and skilled in sequence.āā
