Bhaddajisutta With Bhaddaji

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ āyasmā ānando kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositārāme. At one time Venerable Ānanda was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaā€™s Monastery.

Atha kho āyasmā bhaddaji yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā ānandena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then Venerable Bhaddaji went up to Venerable Ānanda, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho āyasmantaį¹ bhaddajiį¹ āyasmā ānando etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, and Venerable Ānanda said to him:

ā€œkiį¹ nu kho, āvuso bhaddaji, dassanānaį¹ aggaį¹, kiį¹ savanānaį¹ aggaį¹, kiį¹ sukhānaį¹ aggaį¹, kiį¹ saƱƱānaį¹ aggaį¹, kiį¹ bhavānaį¹ agganā€ti? ā€œReverend Bhaddaji, what is the best sight, the best sound, the best happiness, the best perception, and the best state of existence?ā€

ā€œAtthāvuso, brahmā abhibhÅ« anabhibhÅ«to aƱƱadatthudaso vasavattÄ«, yo taį¹ brahmānaį¹ passati, idaį¹ dassanānaį¹ aggaį¹. ā€œReverend, there is this Divinity, the vanquisher, the unvanquished, the universal seer, the wielder of power. When you see the Divinity, thatā€™s the best sight.

Atthāvuso, ābhassarā nāma devā sukhena abhisannā parisannā. There are the gods called ā€˜of streaming radianceā€™, who are drenched and steeped in pleasure.

Te kadāci karahaci udānaį¹ udānenti: Every so often they feel inspired to exclaim:

ā€˜aho sukhaį¹, aho sukhanā€™ti. ā€˜Oh, what bliss! Oh, what bliss!ā€™

Yo taį¹ saddaį¹ suį¹‡Äti, idaį¹ savanānaį¹ aggaį¹. When you hear that, itā€™s the best sound.

Atthāvuso, subhakiį¹‡hā nāma devā. There are the gods called ā€˜of universal beautyā€™.

Te santaį¹yeva tusitā sukhaį¹ paį¹­ivedenti, idaį¹ sukhānaį¹ aggaį¹. Since theyā€™re truly content, they experience pleasure. This is the best happiness.

Atthāvuso, ākiƱcaƱƱāyatanÅ«pagā devā, idaį¹ saƱƱānaį¹ aggaį¹. There are the gods reborn in the dimension of nothingness. This is the best perception.

Atthāvuso, nevasaƱƱānāsaƱƱāyatanÅ«pagā devā, idaį¹ bhavānaį¹ agganā€ti. There are the gods reborn in the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception. This is the best state of existence.ā€

ā€œSameti kho idaį¹ āyasmato bhaddajissa, yadidaį¹ bahunā janenāā€ti? ā€œSo, Venerable Bhaddaji, do you agree with what most people say about this?ā€

ā€œÄ€yasmā kho ānando bahussuto. ā€œWell, Venerable Ānanda, youā€™re very learned.

Paį¹­ibhātu āyasmantaį¹yeva ānandanā€ti. Why donā€™t you clarify this yourself?ā€

ā€œTenahāvuso bhaddaji, suį¹‡Ähi, sādhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œWell then, Reverend Bhaddaji, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvamāvusoā€ti kho āyasmā bhaddaji āyasmato ānandassa paccassosi. ā€œYes, reverend,ā€ Bhaddaji replied.

Āyasmā ānando etadavoca: Ānanda said this:

ā€œYathā passato kho, āvuso, anantarā āsavānaį¹ khayo hoti, idaį¹ dassanānaį¹ aggaį¹. ā€œWhat you see when the defilements end in the present life is the best sight.

Yathā suį¹‡ato anantarā āsavānaį¹ khayo hoti, idaį¹ savanānaį¹ aggaį¹. What you hear when the defilements end in the present life is the best sound.

Yathā sukhitassa anantarā āsavānaį¹ khayo hoti, idaį¹ sukhānaį¹ aggaį¹. The happiness you feel when the defilements end in the present life is the best happiness.

Yathā saƱƱissa anantarā āsavānaį¹ khayo hoti, idaį¹ saƱƱānaį¹ aggaį¹. What you perceive when the defilements end in the present life is the best perception.

Yathā bhÅ«tassa anantarā āsavānaį¹ khayo hoti, idaį¹ bhavānaį¹ agganā€ti. The state of existence in which the defilements end in the present life is the best state of existence.ā€

Dasamaį¹.

Āghātavaggo dutiyo.

Tassuddānaį¹

Dve āghātavinayā,

sākacchā sājÄ«vato paƱhaį¹;

Pucchā nirodho codanā,

sÄ«laį¹ nisanti bhaddajÄ«ti.
