Bhaddajisutta With Bhaddaji
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ ÄyasmÄ Änando kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositÄrÄme. At one time Venerable Änanda was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaās Monastery.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ bhaddaji yenÄyasmÄ Änando tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ ÄyasmatÄ Änandena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then Venerable Bhaddaji went up to Venerable Änanda, and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho Äyasmantaį¹ bhaddajiį¹ ÄyasmÄ Änando etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, and Venerable Änanda said to him:
ākiį¹ nu kho, Ävuso bhaddaji, dassanÄnaį¹ aggaį¹, kiį¹ savanÄnaį¹ aggaį¹, kiį¹ sukhÄnaį¹ aggaį¹, kiį¹ saƱƱÄnaį¹ aggaį¹, kiį¹ bhavÄnaį¹ agganāti? āReverend Bhaddaji, what is the best sight, the best sound, the best happiness, the best perception, and the best state of existence?ā
āAtthÄvuso, brahmÄ abhibhÅ« anabhibhÅ«to aƱƱadatthudaso vasavattÄ«, yo taį¹ brahmÄnaį¹ passati, idaį¹ dassanÄnaį¹ aggaį¹. āReverend, there is this Divinity, the vanquisher, the unvanquished, the universal seer, the wielder of power. When you see the Divinity, thatās the best sight.
AtthÄvuso, ÄbhassarÄ nÄma devÄ sukhena abhisannÄ parisannÄ. There are the gods called āof streaming radianceā, who are drenched and steeped in pleasure.
Te kadÄci karahaci udÄnaį¹ udÄnenti: Every so often they feel inspired to exclaim:
āaho sukhaį¹, aho sukhanāti. āOh, what bliss! Oh, what bliss!ā
Yo taį¹ saddaį¹ suį¹Äti, idaį¹ savanÄnaį¹ aggaį¹. When you hear that, itās the best sound.
AtthÄvuso, subhakiį¹hÄ nÄma devÄ. There are the gods called āof universal beautyā.
Te santaį¹yeva tusitÄ sukhaį¹ paį¹ivedenti, idaį¹ sukhÄnaį¹ aggaį¹. Since theyāre truly content, they experience pleasure. This is the best happiness.
AtthÄvuso, ÄkiƱcaƱƱÄyatanÅ«pagÄ devÄ, idaį¹ saƱƱÄnaį¹ aggaį¹. There are the gods reborn in the dimension of nothingness. This is the best perception.
AtthÄvuso, nevasaƱƱÄnÄsaƱƱÄyatanÅ«pagÄ devÄ, idaį¹ bhavÄnaį¹ agganāti. There are the gods reborn in the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception. This is the best state of existence.ā
āSameti kho idaį¹ Äyasmato bhaddajissa, yadidaį¹ bahunÄ janenÄāti? āSo, Venerable Bhaddaji, do you agree with what most people say about this?ā
āÄyasmÄ kho Änando bahussuto. āWell, Venerable Änanda, youāre very learned.
Paį¹ibhÄtu Äyasmantaį¹yeva Änandanāti. Why donāt you clarify this yourself?ā
āTenahÄvuso bhaddaji, suį¹Ähi, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. āWell then, Reverend Bhaddaji, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvamÄvusoāti kho ÄyasmÄ bhaddaji Äyasmato Änandassa paccassosi. āYes, reverend,ā Bhaddaji replied.
ÄyasmÄ Änando etadavoca: Änanda said this:
āYathÄ passato kho, Ävuso, anantarÄ ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo hoti, idaį¹ dassanÄnaį¹ aggaį¹. āWhat you see when the defilements end in the present life is the best sight.
YathÄ suį¹ato anantarÄ ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo hoti, idaį¹ savanÄnaį¹ aggaį¹. What you hear when the defilements end in the present life is the best sound.
YathÄ sukhitassa anantarÄ ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo hoti, idaį¹ sukhÄnaį¹ aggaį¹. The happiness you feel when the defilements end in the present life is the best happiness.
YathÄ saƱƱissa anantarÄ ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo hoti, idaį¹ saƱƱÄnaį¹ aggaį¹. What you perceive when the defilements end in the present life is the best perception.
YathÄ bhÅ«tassa anantarÄ ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo hoti, idaį¹ bhavÄnaį¹ agganāti. The state of existence in which the defilements end in the present life is the best state of existence.ā
