Saį¹…gāravasutta With Saį¹…gārava

Atha kho saį¹…gāravo brāhmaį¹‡o yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then Saį¹…gārava the brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho saį¹…gāravo brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, Saį¹…gārava sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:

ā€œko nu kho, bho gotama, hetu ko paccayo, yena kadāci dÄ«gharattaį¹ sajjhāyakatāpi mantā nappaį¹­ibhanti, pageva asajjhāyakatā? ā€œWhat is the cause, worthy Gotama, what is the reason why sometimes even hymns that are long-practiced donā€™t spring to mind, let alone those that are not practiced?

Ko pana, bho gotama, hetu ko paccayo, yena kadāci dÄ«gharattaį¹ asajjhāyakatāpi mantā paį¹­ibhanti, pageva sajjhāyakatāā€ti? And why is it that sometimes even hymns that are long-unpracticed spring to mind, let alone those that are practiced?ā€

Yasmiį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, samaye kāmarāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitena cetasā viharati kāmarāgaparetena, uppannassa ca kāmarāgassa nissaraį¹‡aį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti, attatthampi tasmiį¹ samaye yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti na passati, paratthampi tasmiį¹ samaye yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti na passati, ubhayatthampi tasmiį¹ samaye yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti na passati, dÄ«gharattaį¹ sajjhāyakatāpi mantā nappaį¹­ibhanti, pageva asajjhāyakatā. ā€œBrahmin, thereā€™s a time when your heart is overcome and mired in sensual desire and you donā€™t truly understand the escape from sensual desire that has arisen. At that time you donā€™t truly know or see what is good for yourself, good for another, or good for both. Even hymns that are long-practiced donā€™t spring to mind, let alone those that are not practiced.

Seyyathāpi, brāhmaį¹‡a, udapatto saį¹saį¹­į¹­ho lākhāya vā haliddiyā vā nÄ«liyā vā maƱjiį¹­į¹­hāya vā. Suppose there was a bowl of water that was mixed with dye such as red lac, turmeric, indigo, or rose madder.

Tattha cakkhumā puriso sakaį¹ mukhanimittaį¹ paccavekkhamāno yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajāneyya na passeyya. Even a person with clear eyes checking their own reflection wouldnā€™t truly know it or see it.

Evamevaį¹ kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, yasmiį¹ samaye kāmarāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitena cetasā viharati kāmarāgaparetena, uppannassa ca kāmarāgassa nissaraį¹‡aį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti, attatthampi tasmiį¹ samaye yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti na passati, paratthampi ā€¦peā€¦ ubhayatthampi tasmiį¹ samaye yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti na passati, dÄ«gharattaį¹ sajjhāyakatāpi mantā nappaį¹­ibhanti, pageva asajjhāyakatā. Evamevaį¹ kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, yasmiį¹ samaye na vicikicchāpariyuį¹­į¹­hitena cetasā viharati na vicikicchāparetena, uppannāya ca vicikicchāya nissaraį¹‡aį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti, attatthampi tasmiį¹ samaye yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti passati, paratthampi ā€¦peā€¦ ubhayatthampi tasmiį¹ samaye yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti passati, dÄ«gharattaį¹ asajjhāyakatāpi mantā paį¹­ibhanti, pageva sajjhāyakatā. Ayaį¹ kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, hetu ayaį¹ paccayo, yena kadāci dÄ«gharattaį¹ sajjhāyakatāpi mantā nappaį¹­ibhanti, pageva asajjhāyakatā. This is the cause, brahmin, this is the reason why sometimes even hymns that are long-practiced donā€™t spring to mind, let alone those that are not practiced.

Ayaį¹ pana, brāhmaį¹‡a, hetu ayaį¹ paccayo, yena kadāci dÄ«gharattaį¹ asajjhāyakatāpi mantā paį¹­ibhanti, pageva sajjhāyakatāā€ti. And this is why sometimes even hymns that are long-unpracticed spring to mind, let alone those that are practiced.ā€

ā€œAbhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā€¦peā€¦ upāsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. ā€œExcellent, worthy Gotama! ā€¦ From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€
