Ussūrabhattasutta Eating Late

ā€œPaƱcime, bhikkhave, ādÄ«navā ussÅ«rabhatte kule. ā€œMendicants, there are these five drawbacks for a family who takes their meals late in the day.

Katame paƱca? What five?

Ye te atithÄ« pāhunā, te na kālena paį¹­ipÅ«jenti; When guests visit, they are not served on time.

yā tā balipaį¹­iggāhikā devatā, tā na kālena paį¹­ipÅ«jenti; The deities who accept spirit-offerings are not served on time.

ye te samaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡Ä ekabhattikā rattÅ«paratā viratā vikālabhojanā, te na kālena paį¹­ipÅ«jenti; Ascetics and brahmins who eat in one part of the day, abstaining from eating at night, and from food at the wrong time are not served on time.

dāsakammakaraporisā vimukhā kammaį¹ karonti; Bondservants, workers, and staff do their duties neglectfully.

tāvatakaį¹yeva asamayena bhuttaį¹ anojavantaį¹ hoti. A meal eaten during the wrong period is not nutritious.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, paƱca ādÄ«navā ussÅ«rabhatte kule. These are the five drawbacks for a family who takes their meals late in the day.

PaƱcime, bhikkhave, ānisaį¹sā samayabhatte kule. There are these five benefits for a family who takes their meals at a proper time.
