āPaƱcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannÄgato ÄvÄsiko bhikkhu sabrahmacÄrÄ«naį¹ piyo ca hoti manÄpo ca garu ca bhÄvanÄ«yo ca. āMendicants, a resident mendicant with five qualities is dear and beloved to their spiritual companions, respected and admired.
Katamehi paƱcahi? What five?
SÄ«lavÄ hoti, pÄtimokkhasaį¹varasaį¹vuto viharati ÄcÄragocarasampanno aį¹umattesu vajjesu bhayadassÄvÄ«, samÄdÄya sikkhati sikkhÄpadesu; Theyāre ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules theyāve undertaken.
bahussuto hoti sutadharo sutasannicayo, ye te dhammÄ ÄdikalyÄį¹Ä majjhekalyÄį¹Ä pariyosÄnakalyÄį¹Ä sÄtthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹ kevalaparipuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ abhivadanti, tathÄrÅ«pÄssa dhammÄ bahussutÄ honti dhÄtÄ vacasÄ paricitÄ manasÄnupekkhitÄ diį¹į¹hiyÄ suppaį¹ividdhÄ; Theyāre very learned, remembering and keeping what theyāve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice thatās entirely full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, rehearsing them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.
kalyÄį¹avÄco hoti kalyÄį¹avÄkkaraį¹o poriyÄ vÄcÄya samannÄgato vissaį¹į¹hÄya anelagalÄya atthassa viƱƱÄpaniyÄ; Theyāre a good speaker who enunciates well, with a polished, clear, and articulate voice that expresses the meaning.
catunnaį¹ jhÄnÄnaį¹ ÄbhicetasikÄnaį¹ diį¹į¹hadhammasukhavihÄrÄnaį¹ nikÄmalÄbhÄ« hoti akicchalÄbhÄ« akasiralÄbhÄ«; They get the four absorptionsāblissful meditations in this life that belong to the higher mindāwhen they want, without trouble or difficulty.
ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄ anÄsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱÄvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharati. They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.
Imehi kho, bhikkhave, paƱcahi dhammehi samannÄgato ÄvÄsiko bhikkhu sabrahmacÄrÄ«naį¹ piyo ca hoti manÄpo ca garu ca bhÄvanÄ«yo cÄāti. A resident mendicant with these five qualities is dear and beloved to their spiritual companions, respected and admired.ā
