24. Āvāsikavagga 24. A Resident Mendicant

Bahūpakārasutta Very Helpful

ā€œPaƱcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu āvāsassa bahÅ«pakāro hoti. ā€œMendicants, a resident mendicant with five qualities is very helpful to the monastery.

Katamehi paƱcahi? What five?

SÄ«lavā hoti ā€¦peā€¦ samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu; Theyā€™re ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules theyā€™ve undertaken.

bahussuto hoti ā€¦peā€¦ diį¹į¹hiyā suppaį¹ividdhā; Theyā€™re very learned, remembering and keeping what theyā€™ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice thatā€™s totally full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reciting them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.

khaį¹‡įøaphullaį¹ paį¹isaį¹…kharoti; They repair what is decayed and damaged.

mahā kho pana bhikkhusaį¹…gho abhikkanto nānāverajjakā bhikkhÅ« gihÄ«naį¹ upasaį¹…kamitvā āroceti: When a large mendicant Saį¹…gha is arriving with mendicants from abroad, they go to the lay people and announce:

ā€˜mahā kho, āvuso, bhikkhusaį¹…gho abhikkanto nānāverajjakā bhikkhÅ«, karotha puƱƱāni, samayo puƱƱāni kātunā€™ti; ā€˜A large mendicant Saį¹…gha is arriving with mendicants from abroad. Make merit! Now is the time to make merit!ā€™

catunnaį¹ jhānānaį¹ ābhicetasikānaį¹ diį¹į¹hadhammasukhavihārānaį¹ nikāmalābhÄ« hoti akicchalābhÄ« akasiralābhÄ«. They get the four absorptionsā€”blissful meditations in this life that belong to the higher mindā€”when they want, without trouble or difficulty.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, paƱcahi dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu āvāsassa bahÅ«pakāro hotÄ«ā€ti. A resident mendicant with these five qualities is very helpful to the monastery.ā€
