Anukampasutta A Sympathetic Mendicant
āPaƱcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannÄgato ÄvÄsiko bhikkhu gihÄ«naį¹ anukampati. āMendicants, a resident mendicant with five qualities shows sympathy to the lay people.
Katamehi paƱcahi? What five?
AdhisÄ«le samÄdapeti; They encourage them in higher ethics.
dhammadassane niveseti; They equip them to see the truth of the teachings.
gilÄnake upasaį¹
kamitvÄ satiį¹ uppÄdeti: When they are sick, they go to them and prompt their mindfulness, saying:
āarahaggataį¹ Äyasmanto satiį¹ upaį¹į¹hÄpethÄāti; āEstablish your mindfulness, good fellows, in what is worthy.ā
mahÄ kho pana bhikkhusaį¹
gho abhikkanto nÄnÄverajjakÄ bhikkhÅ« gihÄ«naį¹ upasaį¹
kamitvÄ Äroceti: When a large mendicant Saį¹
gha is arriving with mendicants from abroad, they go to the lay people and announce:
āmahÄ kho, Ävuso, bhikkhusaį¹
gho abhikkanto nÄnÄverajjakÄ bhikkhÅ«, karotha puƱƱÄni, samayo puƱƱÄni kÄtunāti; āA large mendicant Saį¹
gha is arriving with mendicants from abroad. Make merit! Now is the time to make merit!ā
yaį¹ kho panassa bhojanaį¹ denti lÅ«khaį¹ vÄ paį¹Ä«taį¹ vÄ taį¹ attanÄ paribhuƱjati, saddhÄdeyyaį¹ na vinipÄteti. And they eat whatever food they give them, coarse or fine, not wasting a gift given in faith.
Imehi kho, bhikkhave, paƱcahi dhammehi samannÄgato ÄvÄsiko bhikkhu gihÄ«naį¹ anukampatÄ«āti. A resident mendicant with these five qualities shows sympathy to the lay people.ā
