Aparapaį¹­hamajhānasutta Another Discourse on the First Absorption

ā€œPaƱcime, bhikkhave, dhamme appahāya abhabbo paį¹­hamaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharituį¹. ā€œMendicants, without giving up these five qualities you canā€™t enter and remain in the first absorption.

Katame paƱca? What five?

Āvāsamacchariyaį¹, kulamacchariyaį¹, lābhamacchariyaį¹, vaį¹‡į¹‡amacchariyaį¹, akataƱƱutaį¹ akataveditaį¹. Stinginess with dwellings, families, material things, praise, and lack of gratitude and thankfulness.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, paƱca dhamme appahāya abhabbo paį¹­hamaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharituį¹. Without giving up these five qualities you canā€™t enter and remain in the first absorption.

PaƱcime, bhikkhave, dhamme pahāya bhabbo paį¹­hamaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharituį¹. But after giving up these five qualities you can enter and remain in the first absorption.
