Mahānāmasutta With Mahānāma

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiį¹ nigrodhārāme. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery.

Atha kho mahānāmo sakko yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno, kho mahānāmo sakko bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Mahānāma the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œyo so, bhante, ariyasāvako āgataphalo viƱƱātasāsano, so katamena vihārena bahulaį¹ viharatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSir, when a noble disciple has reached the fruit and understood the instructions, what kind of meditation do they frequently practice?ā€

ā€œYo so, mahānāma, ariyasāvako āgataphalo viƱƱātasāsano, so iminā vihārena bahulaį¹ viharati. ā€œMahānāma, when a noble disciple has reached the fruit and understood the instructions they frequently practice this kind of meditation.

Idha, mahānāma, ariyasāvako tathāgataį¹ anussarati: Firstly, a noble disciple recollects the Realized One:

ā€˜itipi so bhagavā arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraį¹‡asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaį¹ buddho bhagavāā€™ti. ā€˜That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā€™

Yasmiį¹, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako tathāgataį¹ anussarati nevassa tasmiį¹ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti; When a noble disciple recollects the Realized One their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion.

ujugatamevassa tasmiį¹ samaye cittaį¹ hoti tathāgataį¹ ārabbha. At that time their mind is unswerving, based on the Realized One.

Ujugatacitto kho pana, mahānāma, ariyasāvako labhati atthavedaį¹, labhati dhammavedaį¹, labhati dhammÅ«pasaį¹hitaį¹ pāmojjaį¹. A noble disciple whose mind is unswerving finds inspiration in the meaning and the teaching, and finds joy connected with the teaching.

Pamuditassa pÄ«ti jāyati, pÄ«timanassa kāyo passambhati, passaddhakāyo sukhaį¹ vediyati, sukhino cittaį¹ samādhiyati. When theyā€™re joyful, rapture springs up. When the mind is full of rapture, the body becomes tranquil. When the body is tranquil, they feel bliss. And when theyā€™re blissful, the mind becomes immersed in samādhi.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, mahānāma: This is called

ā€˜ariyasāvako visamagatāya pajāya samappatto viharati, sabyāpajjāya pajāya abyāpajjo viharati, dhammasotaį¹ samāpanno buddhānussatiį¹ bhāvetiā€™. a noble disciple who lives in balance among people who are unbalanced, and lives untroubled among people who are troubled. Theyā€™ve entered the stream of the teaching and develop the recollection of the Buddha.

Puna caparaį¹, mahānāma, ariyasāvako dhammaį¹ anussarati: Furthermore, a noble disciple recollects the teaching:

ā€˜svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo sandiį¹­į¹­hiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaį¹ veditabbo viĆ±Ć±Å«hÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜The teaching is well explained by the Buddhaā€”apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.ā€™

ā€˜suppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, ujuppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, Ʊāyappaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, sāmÄ«cippaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, yadidaį¹ cattāri purisayugāni aį¹­į¹­ha purisapuggalā esa bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiį¹‡eyyo aƱjalikaraį¹‡Ä«yo anuttaraį¹ puƱƱakkhettaį¹ lokassāā€™ti. ā€˜The Saį¹…gha of the Buddhaā€™s disciples is practicing the way thatā€™s good, sincere, systematic, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individuals. This is the Saį¹…gha of the Buddhaā€™s disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.ā€™

Furthermore, a noble disciple recollects their own ethical conduct, which is intact, impeccable, spotless, and unmarred, liberating, praised by sensible people, not mistaken, and leading to immersion.

Yasmiį¹, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako sÄ«laį¹ anussarati nevassa tasmiį¹ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti; When a noble disciple recollects their ethical conduct their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. ā€¦

ujugatamevassa tasmiį¹ samaye cittaį¹ hoti sÄ«laį¹ ārabbha.

Ujugatacitto kho pana, mahānāma, ariyasāvako labhati atthavedaį¹, labhati dhammavedaį¹, labhati dhammÅ«pasaį¹hitaį¹ pāmojjaį¹.

Theyā€™ve entered the stream of the teaching and develop the recollection of ethics.

Puna caparaį¹, mahānāma, ariyasāvako attano cāgaį¹ anussarati: Furthermore, a noble disciple recollects their own generosity:

ā€˜lābhā vata me, suladdhaį¹ vata me. ā€˜Iā€™m so fortunate, so very fortunate!

Yohaį¹ maccheramalapariyuį¹­į¹­hitāya pajāya vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraį¹ ajjhāvasāmi muttacāgo payatapāį¹‡i vosaggarato yācayogo dānasaį¹vibhāgaratoā€™ti. Among people full of the stain of stinginess I live at home rid of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.ā€™

ā€˜santi devā cātumahārājikā, santi devā tāvatiį¹sā, santi devā yāmā, santi devā tusitā, santi devā nimmānaratino, santi devā paranimmitavasavattino, santi devā brahmakāyikā, santi devā tatuttari. ā€˜There are the gods of the four great kings, the gods of the thirty-three, the gods of Yama, the joyful gods, the gods who love to imagine, the gods who control what is imagined by others, the gods of the Divinityā€™s host, and gods even higher than these.

YathārÅ«pāya saddhāya samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tattha upapannā, mayhampi tathārÅ«pā saddhā saį¹vijjati. When those deities passed away from here, they were reborn there because of their faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom. I, too, have the same kind of faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom.ā€™

YathārÅ«pena sÄ«lena samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tattha upapannā, mayhampi tathārÅ«paį¹ sÄ«laį¹ saį¹vijjati.

YathārÅ«pena sutena samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tattha upapannā, mayhampi tathārÅ«paį¹ sutaį¹ saį¹vijjati.

YathārÅ«pena cāgena samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tattha upapannā, mayhampi tathārÅ«po cāgo saį¹vijjati.

YathārÅ«pāya paƱƱāya samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tattha upapannā, mayhampi tathārÅ«pā paƱƱā saį¹vijjatÄ«ā€™ti.

Yasmiį¹, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako attano ca tāsaƱca devatānaį¹ saddhaƱca sÄ«laƱca sutaƱca cāgaƱca paƱƱaƱca anussarati nevassa tasmiį¹ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti; When a noble disciple recollects the faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom of both themselves and the deities their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion.

ujugatamevassa tasmiį¹ samaye cittaį¹ hoti tā devatā ārabbha. At that time their mind is unswerving, based on the deities.

balāni tayo ājānīyā;
