Nissāraį¹‡Ä«yasutta Elements of Escape

ā€œChayimā, bhikkhave, nissāraį¹‡Ä«yā dhātuyo. ā€œMendicants, there are these six elements of escape.

Katamā cha? What six?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹ vadeyya: Take a mendicant who says:

ā€˜mettā hi kho me cetovimutti bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā yānÄ«katā vatthukatā anuį¹­į¹­hitā paricitā susamāraddhā; ā€˜Iā€™ve developed the heartā€™s release by love. Iā€™ve cultivated it, made it my vehicle and my basis, kept it up, consolidated it, and properly implemented it.

atha ca pana me byāpādo cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hatÄ«ā€™ti. Yet somehow ill will still occupies my mind.ā€™

So ā€˜mā hevanā€™tissa vacanÄ«yo: ā€˜māyasmā evaį¹ avaca; mā bhagavantaį¹ abbhācikkhi, na hi sādhu bhagavato abbhakkhānaį¹, na hi bhagavā evaį¹ vadeyya. They should be told, ā€˜Not so, venerable! Donā€™t say that. Donā€™t misrepresent the Buddha, for misrepresentation of the Buddha is not good. And the Buddha would not say that.

Aį¹­į¹­hānametaį¹, āvuso, anavakāso yaį¹ mettāya cetovimuttiyā bhāvitāya bahulÄ«katāya yānÄ«katāya vatthukatāya anuį¹­į¹­hitāya paricitāya susamāraddhāya; Itā€™s impossible, reverend, it cannot happen that the heartā€™s release by love has been developed and properly implemented,

atha ca panassa byāpādo cittaį¹ pariyādāya į¹­hassati, netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. yet somehow ill will still occupies the mind.

Nissaraį¹‡aƱhetaį¹, āvuso, byāpādassa yadidaį¹ mettācetovimuttÄ«ā€™ti. For it is the heartā€™s release by love that is the escape from ill will.ā€™

Idha pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹ vadeyya: Take another mendicant who says:

ā€˜karuį¹‡Ä hi kho me cetovimutti bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā yānÄ«katā vatthukatā anuį¹­į¹­hitā paricitā susamāraddhā; ā€˜Iā€™ve developed the heartā€™s release by compassion. Iā€™ve cultivated it, made it my vehicle and my basis, kept it up, consolidated it, and properly implemented it.

atha ca pana me vihesā cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hatÄ«ā€™ti. Yet somehow the thought of harming still occupies my mind.ā€™

So ā€˜mā hevanā€™tissa vacanÄ«yo: ā€˜māyasmā evaį¹ avaca; mā bhagavantaį¹ abbhācikkhi, na hi sādhu bhagavato abbhakkhānaį¹, na hi bhagavā evaį¹ vadeyya. They should be told, ā€˜Not so, venerable! ā€¦

Aį¹­į¹­hānametaį¹, āvuso, anavakāso yaį¹ karuį¹‡Äya cetovimuttiyā bhāvitāya bahulÄ«katāya yānÄ«katāya vatthukatāya anuį¹­į¹­hitāya paricitāya susamāraddhāya;

atha ca panassa vihesā cittaį¹ pariyādāya į¹­hassati, netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati.

Nissaraį¹‡aƱhetaį¹, āvuso, vihesāya yadidaį¹ karuį¹‡ÄcetovimuttÄ«ā€™ti. For it is the heartā€™s release by compassion that is the escape from thoughts of harming.ā€™

Idha pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹ vadeyya: Take another mendicant who says:

ā€˜muditā hi kho me cetovimutti bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā yānÄ«katā vatthukatā anuį¹­į¹­hitā paricitā susamāraddhā; ā€˜Iā€™ve developed the heartā€™s release by rejoicing. Iā€™ve cultivated it, made it my vehicle and my basis, kept it up, consolidated it, and properly implemented it.

atha ca pana me arati cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hatÄ«ā€™ti. Yet somehow discontent still occupies my mind.ā€™

So ā€˜mā hevanā€™tissa vacanÄ«yo: ā€˜māyasmā evaį¹ avaca; mā bhagavantaį¹ abbhācikkhi, na hi sādhu bhagavato abbhakkhānaį¹, na hi bhagavā evaį¹ vadeyya. They should be told, ā€˜Not so, venerable! ā€¦

Aį¹­į¹­hānametaį¹, āvuso, anavakāso yaį¹ muditāya cetovimuttiyā bhāvitāya bahulÄ«katāya yānÄ«katāya vatthukatāya anuį¹­į¹­hitāya paricitāya susamāraddhāya;

atha ca panassa arati cittaį¹ pariyādāya į¹­hassati, netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati.

Nissaraį¹‡aƱhetaį¹, āvuso, aratiyā yadidaį¹ muditācetovimuttÄ«ā€™ti. For it is the heartā€™s release by rejoicing that is the escape from discontent.ā€™

Idha pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹ vadeyya: Take another mendicant who says:

ā€˜upekkhā hi kho me cetovimutti bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā yānÄ«katā vatthukatā anuį¹­į¹­hitā paricitā susamāraddhā; ā€˜Iā€™ve developed the heartā€™s release by equanimity. Iā€™ve cultivated it, made it my vehicle and my basis, kept it up, consolidated it, and properly implemented it.

atha ca pana me rāgo cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hatÄ«ā€™ti. Yet somehow desire still occupies my mind.ā€™

So ā€˜mā hevanā€™tissa vacanÄ«yo: ā€˜māyasmā evaį¹ avaca; mā bhagavantaį¹ abbhācikkhi, na hi sādhu bhagavato abbhakkhānaį¹, na hi bhagavā evaį¹ vadeyya. They should be told, ā€˜Not so, venerable! ā€¦

Aį¹­į¹­hānametaį¹, āvuso, anavakāso yaį¹ upekkhāya cetovimuttiyā bhāvitāya bahulÄ«katāya yānÄ«katāya vatthukatāya anuį¹­į¹­hitāya paricitāya susamāraddhāya;

atha ca panassa rāgo cittaį¹ pariyādāya į¹­hassati, netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati.

Nissaraį¹‡aƱhetaį¹, āvuso, rāgassa yadidaį¹ upekkhācetovimuttÄ«ā€™ti. For it is the heartā€™s release by equanimity that is the escape from desire.ā€™

Idha pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹ vadeyya: Take another mendicant who says:

ā€˜animittā hi kho me cetovimutti bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā yānÄ«katā vatthukatā anuį¹­į¹­hitā paricitā susamāraddhā; ā€˜Iā€™ve developed the signless release of the heart. Iā€™ve cultivated it, made it my vehicle and my basis, kept it up, consolidated it, and properly implemented it.

atha ca pana me nimittānusāri viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ hotÄ«ā€™ti. Yet somehow my consciousness still follows after signs.ā€™

So ā€˜mā hevanā€™tissa vacanÄ«yo: ā€˜māyasmā evaį¹ avaca; mā bhagavantaį¹ abbhācikkhi, na hi sādhu bhagavato abbhakkhānaį¹, na hi bhagavā evaį¹ vadeyya. They should be told, ā€˜Not so, venerable! ā€¦

Aį¹­į¹­hānametaį¹, āvuso, anavakāso yaį¹ animittāya cetovimuttiyā bhāvitāya bahulÄ«katāya yānÄ«katāya vatthukatāya anuį¹­į¹­hitāya paricitāya susamāraddhāya;

atha ca panassa nimittānusāri viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ bhavissati, netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati.

Nissaraį¹‡aƱhetaį¹, āvuso, sabbanimittānaį¹ yadidaį¹ animittācetovimuttÄ«ā€™ti. For it is the signless release of the heart that is the escape from all signs.ā€™

Idha pana bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹ vadeyya: Take another mendicant who says:

ā€˜asmÄ«ti kho me vigataį¹, ayamahamasmÄ«ti ca na samanupassāmi; ā€˜Iā€™m rid of the conceit ā€œI amā€. And I donā€™t regard anything as ā€œI am thisā€.

atha ca pana me vicikicchākathaį¹…kathāsallaį¹ cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hatÄ«ā€™ti. Yet somehow the dart of doubt and indecision still occupies my mind.ā€™

So ā€˜mā hevanā€™tissa vacanÄ«yo: ā€˜māyasmā evaį¹ avaca; mā bhagavantaį¹ abbhācikkhi, na hi sādhu bhagavato abbhakkhānaį¹, na hi bhagavā evaį¹ vadeyya. They should be told, ā€˜Not so, venerable! Donā€™t say that. Donā€™t misrepresent the Buddha, for misrepresentation of the Buddha is not good. And the Buddha would not say that.

Aį¹­į¹­hānametaį¹, āvuso, anavakāso yaį¹ asmÄ«ti vigate ayamahamasmÄ«ti ca na samanupassato; Itā€™s impossible, reverend, it cannot happen that the conceit ā€œI amā€ has been done away with, and nothing is regarded as ā€œI am thisā€,

atha ca panassa vicikicchākathaį¹…kathāsallaį¹ cittaį¹ pariyādāya į¹­hassati, netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. yet somehow the dart of doubt and indecision still occupies the mind.

Nissaraį¹‡aƱhetaį¹, āvuso, vicikicchākathaį¹…kathāsallassa yadidaį¹ asmÄ«ti mānasamugghātoā€™ti. For it is the uprooting of the conceit ā€œI amā€ that is the escape from the dart of doubt and indecision.ā€™

Imā kho, bhikkhave, cha nissāraį¹‡Ä«yā dhātuyoā€ti. These are the six elements of escape.ā€
