Bhaddakasutta A Good Death

Tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhū āmantesi: There Sāriputta addressed the mendicants:

ā€œÄvuso bhikkhaveā€ti. ā€œReverends, mendicants!ā€

ā€œÄ€vusoā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« āyasmato sāriputtassa paccassosuį¹. ā€œReverend,ā€ they replied.

Āyasmā sāriputto etadavoca: Sāriputta said this:

ā€œTathā tathā, āvuso, bhikkhu vihāraį¹ kappeti yathā yathāssa vihāraį¹ kappayato na bhaddakaį¹ maraį¹‡aį¹ hoti, na bhaddikā kālakiriyā. ā€œA mendicant lives life so as to not have a good death.

KathaƱcāvuso, bhikkhu tathā tathā vihāraį¹ kappeti yathā yathāssa vihāraį¹ kappayato na bhaddakaį¹ maraį¹‡aį¹ hoti, na bhaddikā kālakiriyā? And how do they live life so as to not have a good death?

Idhāvuso, bhikkhu kammārāmo hoti kammarato kammārāmataį¹ anuyutto, bhassārāmo hoti bhassarato bhassārāmataį¹ anuyutto, niddārāmo hoti niddārato niddārāmataį¹ anuyutto, saį¹…gaį¹‡ikārāmo hoti saį¹…gaį¹‡ikarato saį¹…gaį¹‡ikārāmataį¹ anuyutto, saį¹saggārāmo hoti saį¹saggarato saį¹saggārāmataį¹ anuyutto, papaƱcārāmo hoti papaƱcarato papaƱcārāmataį¹ anuyutto. Take a mendicant who relishes work, talk, sleep, company, closeness, and proliferation. They love these things and like to relish them.

Evaį¹ kho, āvuso, bhikkhu tathā tathā vihāraį¹ kappeti yathā yathāssa vihāraį¹ kappayato na bhaddakaį¹ maraį¹‡aį¹ hoti, na bhaddikā kālakiriyā. A mendicant who lives life like this does not have a good death.

Ayaį¹ vuccatāvuso: This is called

ā€˜bhikkhu sakkāyābhirato nappajahāsi sakkāyaį¹ sammā dukkhassa antakiriyāyaā€™. a mendicant who enjoys substantial reality, who hasnā€™t given up substantial reality to rightly make an end of suffering.

Tathā tathāvuso, bhikkhu vihāraį¹ kappeti yathā yathāssa vihāraį¹ kappayato bhaddakaį¹ maraį¹‡aį¹ hoti, bhaddikā kālakiriyā. A mendicant lives life so as to have a good death.

KathaƱcāvuso, bhikkhu tathā tathā vihāraį¹ kappeti yathā yathāssa vihāraį¹ kappayato bhaddakaį¹ maraį¹‡aį¹ hoti, bhaddikā kālakiriyā? And how do they live life so as to have a good death?

Idhāvuso, bhikkhu na kammārāmo hoti na kammarato na kammārāmataį¹ anuyutto, na bhassārāmo hoti na bhassarato na bhassārāmataį¹ anuyutto, na niddārāmo hoti na niddārato na niddārāmataį¹ anuyutto, na saį¹…gaį¹‡ikārāmo hoti na saį¹…gaį¹‡ikarato na saį¹…gaį¹‡ikārāmataį¹ anuyutto, na saį¹saggārāmo hoti na saį¹saggarato na saį¹saggārāmataį¹ anuyutto, na papaƱcārāmo hoti na papaƱcarato na papaƱcārāmataį¹ anuyutto. Take a mendicant who doesnā€™t relish work, talk, sleep, company, closeness, and proliferation. They donā€™t love these things or like to relish them.

Evaį¹ kho, āvuso, bhikkhu tathā tathā vihāraį¹ kappeti yathā yathāssa vihāraį¹ kappayato bhaddakaį¹ maraį¹‡aį¹ hoti, bhaddikā kālakiriyā. A mendicant who lives life like this has a good death.

Ayaį¹ vuccatāvuso: This is called

ā€˜bhikkhu nibbānābhirato pajahāsi sakkāyaį¹ sammā dukkhassa antakiriyāyāā€™ti. a mendicant who delights in extinguishment, who has given up substantial reality to rightly make an end of suffering.

Yo papaƱcamanuyutto, A beast who likes to proliferate,

papaƱcābhirato mago; enjoying proliferation,

VirādhayÄ« so nibbānaį¹, fails to win extinguishment,

yogakkhemaį¹ anuttaraį¹. the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.

Yo ca papaƱcaį¹ hitvāna, But one who gives up proliferation,

nippapaƱcapade rato; enjoying the state of non-proliferation,

ĀrādhayÄ« so nibbānaį¹, wins extinguishment,

yogakkhemaį¹ anuttaranā€ti. the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.ā€
