Macchabandhasutta A Fish Dealer

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā kosalesu cārikaį¹ carati mahatā bhikkhusaį¹…ghena saddhiį¹. At one time the Buddha was wandering in the land of the Kosalans together with a large Saį¹…gha of mendicants.

Addasā kho bhagavā addhānamaggappaį¹­ipanno aƱƱatarasmiį¹ padese macchikaį¹ macchabandhaį¹ macche vadhitvā vadhitvā vikkiį¹‡amānaį¹. While walking along the road he saw a fish dealer in a certain spot selling fish that he had killed himself.

Disvā maggā okkamma aƱƱatarasmiį¹ rukkhamÅ«le paƱƱatte āsane nisÄ«di. Seeing this he left the road, sat at the root of a tree on the seat spread out,

Nisajja kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: and addressed the mendicants,

ā€œpassatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, amuį¹ macchikaį¹ macchabandhaį¹ macche vadhitvā vadhitvā vikkiį¹‡amānanā€ti? ā€œMendicants, do you see that fish dealer selling fish that he killed himself?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, ā€œWhat do you think, mendicants?

api nu tumhehi diį¹­į¹­haį¹ vā sutaį¹ vā: Have you ever seen or heard

ā€˜macchiko macchabandho macche vadhitvā vadhitvā vikkiį¹‡amāno tena kammena tena ājÄ«vena hatthiyāyÄ« vā assayāyÄ« vā rathayāyÄ« vā yānayāyÄ« vā bhogabhogÄ« vā mahantaį¹ vā bhogakkhandhaį¹ ajjhāvasantoā€™ā€ti? of a fish dealer selling fish that he killed himself who, by means of that work and livelihood, got to travel by elephant, horse, chariot, or vehicle, or to enjoy wealth, or to live off a large fortune?ā€

ā€œNo hetaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œNo, sir.ā€

ā€œSādhu, bhikkhave. ā€œGood, mendicants!

Mayāpi kho etaį¹, bhikkhave, neva diį¹­į¹­haį¹ na sutaį¹: I too have never seen or heard of such a thing.

ā€˜macchiko macchabandho macche vadhitvā vadhitvā vikkiį¹‡amāno tena kammena tena ājÄ«vena hatthiyāyÄ« vā assayāyÄ« vā rathayāyÄ« vā yānayāyÄ« vā bhogabhogÄ« vā mahantaį¹ vā bhogakkhandhaį¹ ajjhāvasantoā€™ti.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Te hi so, bhikkhave, macche vajjhe vadhāyupanÄ«te pāpakena manasānupekkhati, tasmā so neva hatthiyāyÄ« hoti na assayāyÄ« na rathayāyÄ« na yānayāyÄ« na bhogabhogÄ«, na mahantaį¹ bhogakkhandhaį¹ ajjhāvasati. Because when the fish are led to the slaughter he regards them with bad intentions.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, What do you think, mendicants?

api nu tumhehi diį¹­į¹­haį¹ vā sutaį¹ vā: Have you ever seen or heard

ā€˜goghātako gāvo vadhitvā vadhitvā vikkiį¹‡amāno tena kammena tena ājÄ«vena hatthiyāyÄ« vā assayāyÄ« vā rathayāyÄ« vā yānayāyÄ« vā bhogabhogÄ« vā mahantaį¹ vā bhogakkhandhaį¹ ajjhāvasantoā€™ā€ti? of a butcher of cattle selling cattle that he killed himself who, by means of that work and livelihood, got to travel by elephant, horse, chariot, or vehicle, or to enjoy wealth, or to live off a large fortune?ā€

ā€œNo hetaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œNo, sir.ā€

ā€œSādhu, bhikkhave. ā€œGood, mendicants!

māgaviko mage vadhitvā vadhitvā vikkiį¹‡amāno tena kammena tena ājÄ«vena hatthiyāyÄ« vā assayāyÄ« vā rathayāyÄ« vā yānayāyÄ« vā bhogabhogÄ« vā mahantaį¹ vā bhogakkhandhaį¹ ajjhāvasantoā€™ā€ti? or a deer-hunter selling deer which he killed himself who, by means of that work and livelihood, got to travel by elephant, horse, chariot, or vehicle, or to enjoy wealth, or to live off a large fortune?ā€

ā€œNo hetaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œNo, sir.ā€

ā€œSādhu, bhikkhave. ā€œGood, mendicants!

Te hi nāma so, bhikkhave, tiracchānagate pāį¹‡e vajjhe vadhāyupanÄ«te pāpakena manasānupekkhamāno neva hatthiyāyÄ« bhavissati na assayāyÄ« na rathayāyÄ« na yānayāyÄ« na bhogabhogÄ«, na mahantaį¹ bhogakkhandhaį¹ ajjhāvasissati. By regarding even animals led to the slaughter with bad intentions he did not get to travel by elephant, horse, chariot, or vehicle, or to enjoy wealth, or to live off a large fortune.

Ko pana vādo yaį¹ manussabhÅ«taį¹ vajjhaį¹ vadhāyupanÄ«taį¹ pāpakena manasānupekkhati. How much worse is someone who regards human beings brought to the slaughter with bad intentions!

TaƱhi tassa, bhikkhave, hoti dÄ«gharattaį¹ ahitāya dukkhāya. This will be for their lasting harm and suffering.

Kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjatÄ«ā€ti. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.ā€
