Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
ākati nu kho, bhante, samayÄ manobhÄvanÄ«yassa bhikkhuno dassanÄya upasaį¹
kamitunāti? āSir, how many occasions are there for going to see an esteemed mendicant?ā
āChayime, bhikkhu, samayÄ manobhÄvanÄ«yassa bhikkhuno dassanÄya upasaį¹
kamituį¹. āMendicant, there are six occasions for going to see an esteemed mendicant.

Idha, bhikkhu, yasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu kÄmarÄgapariyuį¹į¹hitena cetasÄ viharati kÄmarÄgaparetena, uppannassa ca kÄmarÄgassa nissaraį¹aį¹ yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnÄti tasmiį¹ samaye manobhÄvanÄ«yo bhikkhu upasaį¹
kamitvÄ evamassa vacanÄ«yo: Firstly, thereās a time when a mendicantās heart is overcome and mired in sensual desire, and they donāt truly understand the escape from sensual desire that has arisen. On that occasion they should go to an esteemed mendicant and say:
āahaį¹ kho, Ävuso, kÄmarÄgapariyuį¹į¹hitena cetasÄ viharÄmi kÄmarÄgaparetena, uppannassa ca kÄmarÄgassa nissaraį¹aį¹ yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnÄmi. āMy heart is overcome and mired in sensual desire, and I donāt truly understand the escape from sensual desire that has arisen.
SÄdhu vata me ÄyasmÄ kÄmarÄgassa pahÄnÄya dhammaį¹ desetÅ«āti. Venerable, please teach me how to give up sensual desire.ā
Tassa manobhÄvanÄ«yo bhikkhu kÄmarÄgassa pahÄnÄya dhammaį¹ deseti. Then that esteemed mendicant teaches them how to give up sensual desire.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhu, paį¹hamo samayo manobhÄvanÄ«yassa bhikkhuno dassanÄya upasaį¹
kamituį¹. This is the first occasion for going to see an esteemed mendicant.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhu, yasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu byÄpÄdapariyuį¹į¹hitena cetasÄ viharati byÄpÄdaparetena, uppannassa ca byÄpÄdassa nissaraį¹aį¹ yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnÄti tasmiį¹ samaye manobhÄvanÄ«yo bhikkhu upasaį¹

Ayaį¹, bhikkhu, dutiyo samayo manobhÄvanÄ«yassa bhikkhuno dassanÄya upasaį¹
kamituį¹. This is the second occasion for going to see an esteemed mendicant.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhu, yasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu thinamiddhapariyuį¹į¹hitena cetasÄ viharati thinamiddhaparetena, uppannassa ca thinamiddhassa nissaraį¹aį¹ yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnÄti tasmiį¹ samaye manobhÄvanÄ«yo bhikkhu upasaį¹

Ayaį¹, bhikkhu, tatiyo samayo manobhÄvanÄ«yassa bhikkhuno dassanÄya upasaį¹
kamituį¹. This is the third occasion for going to see an esteemed mendicant.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhu, yasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu uddhaccakukkuccapariyuį¹į¹hitena cetasÄ viharati uddhaccakukkuccaparetena, uppannassa ca uddhaccakukkuccassa nissaraį¹aį¹ yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnÄti tasmiį¹ samaye manobhÄvanÄ«yo bhikkhu upasaį¹

kamituį¹. This is the fifth occasion for going to see an esteemed mendicant.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhu, yasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu yaį¹ nimittaį¹ Ägamma yaį¹ nimittaį¹ manasikaroto anantarÄ ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo hoti taį¹ nimittaį¹ nappajÄnÄti tasmiį¹ samaye manobhÄvanÄ«yo bhikkhu upasaį¹
kamitvÄ evamassa vacanÄ«yo: Furthermore, thereās a time when a mendicant doesnāt understand what kind of meditation they need to focus on in order to end the defilements in the present life. On that occasion they should go to an esteemed mendicant and say:
āahaį¹ kho, Ävuso, yaį¹ nimittaį¹ Ägamma yaį¹ nimittaį¹ manasikaroto anantarÄ ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo hoti, taį¹ nimittaį¹ nappajÄnÄmi. āI donāt understand what kind of meditation to focus on in order to end the defilements in the present life.
SÄdhu vata me ÄyasmÄ ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄya dhammaį¹ desetÅ«āti. Venerable, please teach me how to end the defilements.ā
Tassa manobhÄvanÄ«yo bhikkhu ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄya dhammaį¹ deseti. Then that esteemed mendicant teaches them how to end the defilements.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhu, chaį¹į¹ho samayo manobhÄvanÄ«yassa bhikkhuno dassanÄya upasaį¹
kamituį¹. This is the sixth occasion for going to see an esteemed mendicant.
Ime kho, bhikkhu, cha samayÄ manobhÄvanÄ«yassa bhikkhuno dassanÄya upasaį¹
kamitunāti. These are the six occasions for going to see an esteemed mendicant.ā
