Anuttariyasutta Unsurpassable

ā€œChayimāni, bhikkhave, anuttariyāni. ā€œMendicants, these six things are unsurpassable.

Katamāni cha? What six?

Dassanānuttariyaį¹, savanānuttariyaį¹, lābhānuttariyaį¹, sikkhānuttariyaį¹, pāricariyānuttariyaį¹, anussatānuttariyanti. The unsurpassable seeing, listening, acquisition, training, service, and recollection.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, dassanānuttariyaį¹? And what is the unsurpassable seeing?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco hatthiratanampi dassanāya gacchati, assaratanampi dassanāya gacchati, maį¹‡iratanampi dassanāya gacchati, uccāvacaį¹ vā pana dassanāya gacchati, samaį¹‡aį¹ vā brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ vā micchādiį¹­į¹­hikaį¹ micchāpaį¹­ipannaį¹ dassanāya gacchati. Some people go to see an elephant-treasure, a horse-treasure, a jewel-treasure, or a diverse spectrum of sights; or ascetics and brahmins of wrong view and wrong practice.

Atthetaį¹, bhikkhave, dassanaį¹; netaį¹ natthÄ«ti vadāmi. There is such a seeing, I donā€™t deny it.

TaƱca kho etaį¹, bhikkhave, dassanaį¹ hÄ«naį¹ gammaį¹ pothujjanikaį¹ anariyaį¹ anatthasaį¹hitaį¹, na nibbidāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upasamāya na abhiƱƱāya na sambodhāya na nibbānāya saį¹vattati. That seeing is low, crude, ordinary, ignoble, and pointless. It doesnā€™t lead to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.

Yo ca kho, bhikkhave, tathāgataį¹ vā tathāgatasāvakaį¹ vā dassanāya gacchati niviį¹­į¹­hasaddho niviį¹­į¹­hapemo ekantagato abhippasanno, etadānuttariyaį¹, bhikkhave, dassanānaį¹ sattānaį¹ visuddhiyā sokaparidevānaį¹ samatikkamāya dukkhadomanassānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamāya Ʊāyassa adhigamāya nibbānassa sacchikiriyāya, yadidaį¹ tathāgataį¹ vā tathāgatasāvakaį¹ vā dassanāya gacchati niviį¹­į¹­hasaddho niviį¹­į¹­hapemo ekantagato abhippasanno. The unsurpassable seeing is when someone with settled faith and love, sure and devoted, goes to see a Realized One or their disciple. This is in order to purify sentient beings, to get past sorrow and crying, to make an end of pain and sadness, to discover the system, and to realize extinguishment.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, dassanānuttariyaį¹. This is called the unsurpassable seeing.

Iti dassanānuttariyaį¹. Such is the unsurpassable seeing.

SavanānuttariyaƱca kathaį¹ hoti? But what of the unsurpassable hearing?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco bherisaddampi savanāya gacchati, vÄ«į¹‡Äsaddampi savanāya gacchati, gÄ«tasaddampi savanāya gacchati, uccāvacaį¹ vā pana savanāya gacchati, samaį¹‡assa vā brāhmaį¹‡assa vā micchādiį¹­į¹­hikassa micchāpaį¹­ipannassa dhammassavanāya gacchati. Some people go to hear the sound of drums, arched harps, singing, or a diverse spectrum of sounds; or ascetics and brahmins of wrong view and wrong practice.

Atthetaį¹, bhikkhave, savanaį¹; netaį¹ natthÄ«ti vadāmi. There is such a hearing, I donā€™t deny it.

TaƱca kho etaį¹, bhikkhave, savanaį¹ hÄ«naį¹ gammaį¹ pothujjanikaį¹ anariyaį¹ anatthasaį¹hitaį¹, na nibbidāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upasamāya na abhiƱƱāya na sambodhāya na nibbānāya saį¹vattati. That hearing ā€¦ doesnā€™t lead to extinguishment.

Yo ca kho, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa vā tathāgatasāvakassa vā dhammassavanāya gacchati niviį¹­į¹­hasaddho niviį¹­į¹­hapemo ekantagato abhippasanno, etadānuttariyaį¹, bhikkhave, savanānaį¹ sattānaį¹ visuddhiyā sokaparidevānaį¹ samatikkamāya dukkhadomanassānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamāya Ʊāyassa adhigamāya nibbānassa sacchikiriyāya, yadidaį¹ tathāgatassa vā tathāgatasāvakassa vā dhammassavanāya gacchati niviį¹­į¹­hasaddho niviį¹­į¹­hapemo ekantagato abhippasanno. The unsurpassable hearing is when someone with settled faith and love, sure and devoted, goes to hear the teaching of a Realized One or one of his disciples. ā€¦

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, savanānuttariyaį¹. This is called the unsurpassable hearing.

Iti dassanānuttariyaį¹, savanānuttariyaį¹. Such is the unsurpassable seeing and hearing.

LābhānuttariyaƱca kathaį¹ hoti? But what of the unsurpassable acquisition?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puttalābhampi labhati, dāralābhampi labhati, dhanalābhampi labhati, uccāvacaį¹ vā pana lābhaį¹ labhati, samaį¹‡e vā brāhmaį¹‡e vā micchādiį¹­į¹­hike micchāpaį¹­ipanne saddhaį¹ paį¹­ilabhati. Some people acquire a child, a wife, wealth, or a diverse spectrum of things; or they acquire faith in an ascetic or brahmin of wrong view and wrong practice.

Attheso, bhikkhave, lābho; neso natthÄ«ti vadāmi. There is such an acquisition, I donā€™t deny it.

So ca kho eso, bhikkhave, lābho hÄ«no gammo pothujjaniko anariyo anatthasaį¹hito, na nibbidāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upasamāya na abhiƱƱāya na sambodhāya na nibbānāya saį¹vattati. That acquisition ā€¦ doesnā€™t lead to extinguishment.

Yo ca kho, bhikkhave, tathāgate vā tathāgatasāvake vā saddhaį¹ paį¹­ilabhati niviį¹­į¹­hasaddho niviį¹­į¹­hapemo ekantagato abhippasanno, etadānuttariyaį¹, bhikkhave, lābhānaį¹ sattānaį¹ visuddhiyā sokaparidevānaį¹ samatikkamāya dukkhadomanassānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamāya Ʊāyassa adhigamāya nibbānassa sacchikiriyāya, yadidaį¹ tathāgate vā tathāgatasāvake vā saddhaį¹ paį¹­ilabhati niviį¹­į¹­hasaddho niviį¹­į¹­hapemo ekantagato abhippasanno. The unsurpassable acquisition is when someone with settled faith and love, sure and devoted, acquires faith in a Realized One or their disciple. ā€¦

SikkhānuttariyaƱca kathaį¹ hoti? But what of the unsurpassable training?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco hatthismimpi sikkhati, assasmimpi sikkhati, rathasmimpi sikkhati, dhanusmimpi sikkhati, tharusmimpi sikkhati, uccāvacaį¹ vā pana sikkhati, samaį¹‡assa vā brāhmaį¹‡assa vā micchādiį¹­į¹­hikassa micchāpaį¹­ipannassa sikkhati. Some people train in elephant riding, horse riding, chariot driving, archery, swordsmanship, or a diverse spectrum of things; or they train under an ascetic or brahmin of wrong view and wrong practice.

Atthesā, bhikkhave, sikkhā; nesā natthÄ«ti vadāmi. There is such a training, I donā€™t deny it.

Sā ca kho esā, bhikkhave, sikkhā hÄ«nā gammā pothujjanikā anariyā anatthasaį¹hitā, na nibbidāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upasamāya na abhiƱƱāya na sambodhāya na nibbānāya saį¹vattati. That training ā€¦ doesnā€™t lead to extinguishment.

Yo ca kho, bhikkhave, tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye adhisÄ«lampi sikkhati, adhicittampi sikkhati, adhipaƱƱampi sikkhati niviį¹­į¹­hasaddho niviį¹­į¹­hapemo ekantagato abhippasanno, etadānuttariyaį¹, bhikkhave, sikkhānaį¹ sattānaį¹ visuddhiyā sokaparidevānaį¹ samatikkamāya dukkhadomanassānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamāya Ʊāyassa adhigamāya nibbānassa sacchikiriyāya, yadidaį¹ tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye adhisÄ«lampi sikkhati, adhicittampi sikkhati, adhipaƱƱampi sikkhati, niviį¹­į¹­hasaddho niviį¹­į¹­hapemo ekantagato abhippasanno. The unsurpassable training is when someone with settled faith and love, sure and devoted, trains in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom in the teaching and training proclaimed by a Realized One. ā€¦

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sikkhānuttariyaį¹. This is called the unsurpassable training.

Iti dassanānuttariyaį¹, savanānuttariyaį¹, lābhānuttariyaį¹, sikkhānuttariyaį¹. Such is the unsurpassable seeing, hearing, acquisition, and training.

PāricariyānuttariyaƱca kathaį¹ hoti? But what of the unsurpassable service?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco khattiyampi paricarati, brāhmaį¹‡ampi paricarati, gahapatimpi paricarati, uccāvacaį¹ vā pana paricarati, samaį¹‡aį¹ vā brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ vā micchādiį¹­į¹­hikaį¹ micchāpaį¹­ipannaį¹ paricarati. Some people serve an aristocrat, a brahmin, a householder, or a diverse spectrum of people; or they serve ascetics and brahmins of wrong view and wrong practice.

Atthesā, bhikkhave, pāricariyā; nesā natthÄ«ti vadāmi. There is such service, I donā€™t deny it.

Sā ca kho esā, bhikkhave, pāricariyā hÄ«nā gammā pothujjanikā anariyā anatthasaį¹hitā, na nibbidāya ā€¦peā€¦ na nibbānāya saį¹vattati. That service ā€¦ doesnā€™t lead to extinguishment.

Yo ca kho, bhikkhave, tathāgataį¹ vā tathāgatasāvakaį¹ vā paricarati niviį¹­į¹­hasaddho niviį¹­į¹­hapemo ekantagato abhippasanno, etadānuttariyaį¹, bhikkhave, pāricariyānaį¹ sattānaį¹ visuddhiyā sokaparidevānaį¹ samatikkamāya dukkhadomanassānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamāya Ʊāyassa adhigamāya nibbānassa sacchikiriyāya, yadidaį¹ tathāgataį¹ vā tathāgatasāvakaį¹ vā paricarati niviį¹­į¹­hasaddho niviį¹­į¹­hapemo ekantagato abhippasanno. The unsurpassable service is when someone with settled faith and love, sure and devoted, serves a Realized One or their disciple. ā€¦

AnussatānuttariyaƱca kathaį¹ hoti? But what of the unsurpassable recollection?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puttalābhampi anussarati, dāralābhampi anussarati, dhanalābhampi anussarati, uccāvacaį¹ vā pana lābhaį¹ anussarati, samaį¹‡aį¹ vā brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ vā micchādiį¹­į¹­hikaį¹ micchāpaį¹­ipannaį¹ anussarati. Some people recollect a child, a wife, wealth, or a diverse spectrum of things; or they recollect an ascetic or brahmin of wrong view and wrong practice.

Atthesā, bhikkhave, anussati; nesā natthÄ«ti vadāmi. There is such recollection, I donā€™t deny it.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, anussatānuttariyaį¹. This is called the unsurpassable recollection.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cha anuttariyānīti. These are the six unsurpassable things.

Ye dassanānuttaraį¹ laddhā, Theyā€™ve gained the unsurpassed seeing,

savanaƱca anuttaraį¹; the unsurpassed hearing,

Lābhānuttariyaį¹ laddhā, and the unsurpassable acquisition.

sikkhānuttariye ratā. They enjoy the unsurpassable training

Upaį¹­į¹­hitā pāricariyā, and serve with care.

bhāvayanti anussatiį¹; Then they develop recollection

Vivekappaį¹­isaį¹yuttaį¹, connected with seclusion,

khemaį¹ amatagāminiį¹. which is safe, and leads to freedom from death.

Appamāde pamuditā, They rejoice in diligence,

nipakā sÄ«lasaį¹vutā; alert and ethically restrained.

Te ve kālena paccenti, And in time they arrive

yattha dukkhaį¹ nirujjhatÄ«ā€ti. at the place where suffering ceases.ā€

Dasamaį¹.

Anuttariyavaggo tatiyo.

Tassuddānaį¹

Sāmako aparihāniyo,

Bhayaį¹ himavānussati;

Kaccāno dve ca samayā,

Udāyī anuttariyenāti.
