Paį¹­hamaaparihānasutta Non-decline (1st)

Atha kho aƱƱatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaį¹‡į¹‡Ä kevalakappaį¹ jetavanaį¹ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­hāsi. Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire Jetaā€™s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him:

ā€œChayime, bhante, dhammā bhikkhuno aparihānāya saį¹vattanti. ā€œSir, these six things donā€™t lead to the decline of a mendicant.

Katame cha? What six?

Satthugāravatā, dhammagāravatā, saį¹…ghagāravatā, sikkhāgāravatā, appamādagāravatā, paį¹­isanthāragāravatāā€”Respect for the Teacher, for the teaching, for the Saį¹…gha, for the training, for diligence, and for hospitality.

ime kho, bhante, cha dhammā bhikkhuno aparihānāya saį¹vattantÄ«ā€ti. These six things donā€™t lead to the decline of a mendicant.ā€

Idamavoca sā devatā. Thatā€™s what that deity said,

SamanuƱƱo satthā ahosi. and the teacher approved.

Atha kho sā devatā ā€œsamanuƱƱo me satthāā€ti bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā padakkhiį¹‡aį¹ katvā tatthevantaradhāyi. Then that deity, knowing that the teacher approved, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before vanishing right there.

Atha kho bhagavā tassā rattiyā accayena bhikkhū āmantesi: Then, when the night had passed, the Buddha told the mendicants all that had happened, adding:

ā€œimaį¹, bhikkhave, rattiį¹ aƱƱatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaį¹‡į¹‡Ä kevalakappaį¹ jetavanaį¹ obhāsetvā yenāhaį¹ tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā maį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­hāsi. Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hitā kho, bhikkhave, sā devatā maį¹ etadavoca:

ā€˜chayime, bhante, dhammā bhikkhuno aparihānāya saį¹vattanti.

Satthugāravatā, dhammagāravatā, saį¹…ghagāravatā, sikkhāgāravatā, appamādagāravatā, paį¹­isanthāragāravatāā€”

Idamavoca, bhikkhave, sā devatā.

Idaį¹ vatvā maį¹ abhivādetvā padakkhiį¹‡aį¹ katvā tatthevantaradhāyÄ«ti.

Satthugaru dhammagaru, ā€œRespect for the Teacher and the teaching,

saį¹…ghe ca tibbagāravo; and keen respect for the Saį¹…gha;

Appamādagaru bhikkhu, a mendicant who respects diligence

paį¹­isanthāragāravo; and hospitality

Abhabbo parihānāya, canā€™t decline,

nibbānasseva santikeā€ti. and has drawn near to extinguishment.ā€
