AttakārÄ«sutta Oneā€™s Own Volition

Atha kho aƱƱataro brāhmaį¹‡o yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then a certain brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

ā€œahaƱhi, bho gotama, evaį¹vādÄ« evaį¹diį¹­į¹­hi: ā€œWorthy Gotama, this is my doctrine and view:

ā€˜natthi attakāro, natthi parakāroā€™ā€ti. One does not act of oneā€™s own volition, nor does one act of anotherā€™s volition.ā€

ā€œMāhaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, evaį¹vādiį¹ evaį¹diį¹­į¹­hiį¹ addasaį¹ vā assosiį¹ vā. ā€œBrahmin, may I never see or hear of anyone holding such a doctrine or view!

KathaƱhi nāma sayaį¹ abhikkamanto, sayaį¹ paį¹­ikkamanto evaį¹ vakkhati: How on earth can someone who comes and goes on his own say that

ā€˜natthi attakāro, natthi parakāroā€™ti. one does not act of oneā€™s own volition, nor does one act of anotherā€™s volition?

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, brāhmaį¹‡a, atthi ārabbhadhātÅ«ā€ti? What do you think, brahmin, is there an element of initiative?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhoā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œÄ€rabbhadhātuyā sati ārabbhavanto sattā paƱƱāyantÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSince this is so, do we find sentient beings who initiate activity?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhoā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œYaį¹ kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, ārabbhadhātuyā sati ārabbhavanto sattā paƱƱāyanti, ayaį¹ sattānaį¹ attakāro ayaį¹ parakāro. ā€œSince there is an element of initiative, and sentient beings who initiate activity are found, sentient beings act of their own volition or that of another.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, brāhmaį¹‡a, atthi nikkamadhātu ā€¦peā€¦ What do you think, brahmin, is there an element of persistence ā€¦

atthi parakkamadhātu ā€¦ exertion ā€¦

atthi thāmadhātu ā€¦ strength ā€¦

atthi į¹­hitidhātu ā€¦ endurance ā€¦

atthi upakkamadhātÅ«ā€ti? energy?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhoā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œUpakkamadhātuyā sati upakkamavanto sattā paƱƱāyantÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSince this is so, do we find sentient beings who have energy?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhoā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œYaį¹ kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, upakkamadhātuyā sati upakkamavanto sattā paƱƱāyanti, ayaį¹ sattānaį¹ attakāro ayaį¹ parakāro. ā€œSince there is an element of energy, and sentient beings who have energy are found, sentient beings act of their own volition or that of another.

Māhaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, evaį¹vādiį¹ evaį¹diį¹­į¹­hiį¹ addasaį¹ vā assosiį¹ vā. Brahmin, may I never see or hear of anyone holding such a doctrine or view!

ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€
