Mahācundasutta By Mahācunda

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ āyasmā mahācundo cetÄ«su viharati sayaį¹jātiyaį¹. At one time Venerable Mahācunda was staying in the land of the Cetis at Sahajāti.

Tatra kho āyasmā mahācundo bhikkhū āmantesi: There he addressed the mendicants:

ā€œÄvuso bhikkhaveā€ti. ā€œReverends, mendicants!ā€

ā€œÄ€vusoā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« āyasmato mahācundassa paccassosuį¹. ā€œReverend,ā€ they replied.

Āyasmā mahācundo etadavoca: Venerable Mahācunda said this:

ā€œIdhāvuso, dhammayogā bhikkhÅ« jhāyÄ« bhikkhÅ« apasādenti: ā€œTake a case where mendicants who practice discernment of principles rebuke mendicants who practice absorption meditation:

ā€˜ime pana jhāyinomhā, jhāyinomhāti jhāyanti pajjhāyanti nijjhāyanti avajjhāyanti. ā€˜They say, ā€œWe practice absorption meditation! We practice absorption meditation!ā€ And they meditate and concentrate and contemplate and ruminate.

Kimime jhāyanti, kintime jhāyanti, kathaį¹ ime jhāyantÄ«ā€™ti? Why do they practice absorption meditation? In what way do they practice absorption meditation? How do they practice absorption meditation?ā€™

Tattha dhammayogā ca bhikkhÅ« nappasÄ«danti, jhāyÄ« ca bhikkhÅ« nappasÄ«danti, na ca bahujanahitāya paį¹ipannā honti bahujanasukhāya bahuno janassa atthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanussānaį¹. In this case the mendicants who practice discernment of principles are not inspired, and the mendicants who practice absorption meditation are not inspired. And theyā€™re not acting for the welfare and happiness of the people, for the people, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.

Idha panāvuso, jhāyī bhikkhū dhammayoge bhikkhū apasādenti: Now, take a case where mendicants who practice absorption meditation rebuke mendicants who practice discernment of principles:

ā€˜ime pana dhammayogamhā, dhammayogamhāti uddhatā unnaįø·Ä capalā mukharā vikiį¹‡į¹‡avācā muį¹į¹hassatÄ« asampajānā asamāhitā vibbhantacittā pākatindriyā. ā€˜They say, ā€œWe practice discernment of principles! We practice discernment of principles!ā€ But theyā€™re restless, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, loose-tongued, unmindful, lacking situational awareness and immersion, with straying minds and undisciplined faculties.

Kimime dhammayogā, kintime dhammayogā, kathaį¹ ime dhammayogāā€™ti? Why do they practice discernment of principles? In what way do they practice discernment of principles? How do they practice discernment of principles?ā€™

Tattha jhāyÄ« ca bhikkhÅ« nappasÄ«danti, dhammayogā ca bhikkhÅ« nappasÄ«danti, na ca bahujanahitāya paį¹ipannā honti bahujanasukhāya bahuno janassa atthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanussānaį¹. In this case the mendicants who practice absorption meditation are not inspired, and the mendicants who practice discernment of principles are not inspired. And theyā€™re not acting for the welfare and happiness of the people, for the people, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.

Idha panāvuso, dhammayogā bhikkhÅ« dhammayogānaƱƱeva bhikkhÅ«naį¹ vaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ bhāsanti, no jhāyÄ«naį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ vaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ bhāsanti. Now, take a case where mendicants who practice discernment of principles praise only others like them, not mendicants who practice absorption meditation.

Idha panāvuso, jhāyÄ« bhikkhÅ« jhāyÄ«naƱƱeva bhikkhÅ«naį¹ vaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ bhāsanti, no dhammayogānaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ vaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ bhāsanti. And take a case where mendicants who practice absorption meditation praise only others like them, not mendicants who practice discernment of principles.

Tasmātihāvuso, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: So you should train like this:

ā€˜dhammayogā samānā jhāyÄ«naį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ vaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ bhāsissāmāā€™ti. ā€˜As mendicants who practice discernment of principles, we will praise mendicants who practice absorption meditation.ā€™

EvaƱhi vo, āvuso, sikkhitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s how you should train.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Acchariyā hete, āvuso, puggalā dullabhā lokasmiį¹, ye amataį¹ dhātuį¹ kāyena phusitvā viharanti. Because itā€™s incredibly rare to find individuals in the world who have direct meditative experience of the element free of death.

Tasmātihāvuso, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: So you should train like this:

ā€˜jhāyÄ« samānā dhammayogānaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ vaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ bhāsissāmāā€™ti. ā€˜As mendicants who practice absorption meditation, we will praise mendicants who practice discernment of principles.ā€™

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Acchariyā hete, āvuso, puggalā dullabhā lokasmiį¹ ye gambhÄ«raį¹ atthapadaį¹ paƱƱāya ativijjha passantÄ«ā€ti. Because itā€™s incredibly rare to find individuals in the world who see the meaning of a deep saying with penetrating wisdom.ā€
