Dutiyasandiį¹­į¹­hikasutta Apparent in the Present Life (2nd)

Atha kho aƱƱataro brāhmaį¹‡o yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then a certain brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

ā€œā€˜sandiį¹­į¹­hiko dhammo, sandiį¹­į¹­hiko dhammoā€™ti, bho gotama, vuccati. ā€œWorthy Gotama, they speak of ā€˜a teaching apparent in the present lifeā€™.

Kittāvatā nu kho, bho gotama, sandiį¹­į¹­hiko dhammo hoti akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaį¹ veditabbo viĆ±Ć±Å«hÄ«ā€ti? In what way is the teaching apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves?ā€

ā€œTena hi, brāhmaį¹‡a, taƱƱevettha paį¹­ipucchissāmi. Yathā te khameyya tathā naį¹ byākareyyāsi. ā€œWell then, brahmin, Iā€™ll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, brāhmaį¹‡a, What do you think, brahmin?

santaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ rāgaį¹ ā€˜atthi me ajjhattaį¹ rāgoā€™ti pajānāsi, asantaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ rāgaį¹ ā€˜natthi me ajjhattaį¹ rāgoā€™ti pajānāsÄ«ā€ti? When thereā€™s greed in you, do you understand ā€˜I have greed in meā€™? And when thereā€™s no greed in you, do you understand ā€˜I have no greed in meā€™?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhoā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œYaį¹ kho tvaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, santaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ rāgaį¹ ā€˜atthi me ajjhattaį¹ rāgoā€™ti pajānāsi, asantaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ rāgaį¹ ā€˜natthi me ajjhattaį¹ rāgoā€™ti pajānāsiā€”ā€œSince you know this,

evampi kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, sandiį¹­į¹­hiko dhammo hoti ā€¦peā€¦. this is how the teaching is apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, brāhmaį¹‡a, What do you think, brahmin?

santaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ manosandosaį¹ ā€˜atthi me ajjhattaį¹ manosandosoā€™ti pajānāsi, asantaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ manosandosaį¹ ā€˜natthi me ajjhattaį¹ manosandosoā€™ti pajānāsÄ«ā€ti? When thereā€™s corruption that leads to mental deeds in you, do you understand ā€˜I have corruption that leads to mental deeds in meā€™? And when thereā€™s no corruption that leads to mental deeds in you, do you understand ā€˜I have no corruption that leads to mental deeds in meā€™?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhoā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œYaį¹ kho tvaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, santaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ manosandosaį¹ ā€˜atthi me ajjhattaį¹ manosandosoā€™ti pajānāsi, asantaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ manosandosaį¹ ā€˜natthi me ajjhattaį¹ manosandosoā€™ti pajānāsiā€”ā€œSince you know this,

evaį¹ kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, sandiį¹­į¹­hiko dhammo hoti akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaį¹ veditabbo viĆ±Ć±Å«hÄ«ā€ti. this is how the teaching is apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.ā€

ā€œAbhikkantaį¹, bho gotama, abhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œExcellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! ā€¦

upāsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€
