Indriyasaį¹varasutta Sense Restraint

ā€œIndriyasaį¹vare, bhikkhave, asati indriyasaį¹varavipannassa hatÅ«panisaį¹ hoti sÄ«laį¹; ā€œMendicants, when there is no sense restraint, one who lacks sense restraint has destroyed a vital condition for ethical conduct.

sīle asati sīlavipannassa hatūpaniso hoti sammāsamādhi; When there is no ethical conduct, one who lacks ethics has destroyed a vital condition for right immersion.

sammāsamādhimhi asati sammāsamādhivipannassa hatÅ«panisaį¹ hoti yathābhÅ«taƱāį¹‡adassanaį¹; When there is no right immersion, one who lacks right immersion has destroyed a vital condition for true knowledge and vision.

yathābhÅ«taƱāį¹‡adassane asati yathābhÅ«taƱāį¹‡adassanavipannassa hatÅ«paniso hoti nibbidāvirāgo; When there is no true knowledge and vision, one who lacks true knowledge and vision has destroyed a vital condition for disillusionment and dispassion.

nibbidāvirāge asati nibbidāvirāgavipannassa hatÅ«panisaį¹ hoti vimuttiƱāį¹‡adassanaį¹. When there is no disillusionment and dispassion, one who lacks disillusionment and dispassion has destroyed a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, rukkho sākhāpalāsavipanno. Suppose there was a tree that lacked branches and foliage.

Tassa papaį¹­ikāpi na pāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati, tacopi na pāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati, pheggupi na pāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati, sāropi na pāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati. Its shoots, bark, softwood, and heartwood would not grow to fullness.

Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, indriyasaį¹vare asati indriyasaį¹varavipannassa hatÅ«panisaį¹ hoti sÄ«laį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ In the same way, when there is no sense restraint, one who lacks sense restraint has destroyed a vital condition for ethical conduct. ā€¦

vimuttiƱāį¹‡adassanaį¹. One who lacks disillusionment and dispassion has destroyed a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.

Indriyasaį¹vare, bhikkhave, sati indriyasaį¹varasampannassa upanisasampannaį¹ hoti sÄ«laį¹; When there is sense restraint, one who has fulfilled sense restraint has fulfilled a vital condition for ethical conduct.

sīle sati sīlasampannassa upanisasampanno hoti sammāsamādhi; When there is ethical conduct, one who has fulfilled ethical conduct has fulfilled a vital condition for right immersion.

sammāsamādhimhi sati sammāsamādhisampannassa upanisasampannaį¹ hoti yathābhÅ«taƱāį¹‡adassanaį¹; When there is right immersion, one who has fulfilled right immersion has fulfilled a vital condition for true knowledge and vision.

yathābhÅ«taƱāį¹‡adassane sati yathābhÅ«taƱāį¹‡adassanasampannassa upanisasampanno hoti nibbidāvirāgo; When there is true knowledge and vision, one who has fulfilled true knowledge and vision has fulfilled a vital condition for disillusionment and dispassion.

nibbidāvirāge sati nibbidāvirāgasampannassa upanisasampannaį¹ hoti vimuttiƱāį¹‡adassanaį¹. When there is disillusionment and dispassion, one who has fulfilled disillusionment and dispassion has fulfilled a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, rukkho sākhāpalāsasampanno. Tassa papaį¹­ikāpi pāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati, tacopi pāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati, pheggupi pāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati, sāropi pāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati. Suppose there was a tree that was complete with branches and foliage. Its shoots, bark, softwood, and heartwood would all grow to fullness.
