Ānandasutta With Ānanda

Atha kho āyasmā ānando yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā sāriputtena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then Venerable Ānanda went up to Venerable Sāriputta, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando āyasmantaį¹ sāriputtaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, Ānanda sat down to one side, and said to Sāriputta:

ā€œKittāvatā nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhu assutaƱceva dhammaį¹ suį¹‡Äti, sutā cassa dhammā na sammosaį¹ gacchanti, ye cassa dhammā pubbe cetasā samphuį¹į¹hapubbā te ca samudācaranti, aviƱƱātaƱca vijānātÄ«ā€ti? ā€œReverend Sāriputta, how does a mendicant get to hear a teaching they havenā€™t heard before? How do they remember those teachings they have heard? How do they keep exercising the teachings with which they are already familiar? And how do they come to understand what they havenā€™t understood before?ā€

ā€œÄ€yasmā kho ānando bahussuto. ā€œWell, Venerable Ānanda, youā€™re very learned.

Paį¹ibhātu āyasmantaį¹yeva ānandanā€ti. Why donā€™t you clarify this yourself?ā€

ā€œTenahāvuso sāriputta, suį¹‡Ähi, sādhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œWell then, Reverend Sāriputta, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvamāvusoā€ti kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmato ānandassa paccassosi. ā€œYes, reverend,ā€ Sāriputta replied.

Āyasmā ānando etadavoca: Ānanda said this:

ā€œIdhāvuso sāriputta, bhikkhu dhammaį¹ pariyāpuį¹‡Ätiā€”ā€œReverend Sāriputta, take a mendicant who memorizes the teachingā€”

suttaį¹ geyyaį¹ veyyākaraį¹‡aį¹ gāthaį¹ udānaį¹ itivuttakaį¹ jātakaį¹ abbhutadhammaį¹ vedallaį¹. statements, mixed prose & verse, discussions, verses, inspired exclamations, legends, stories of past lives, amazing stories, and elaborations.

So yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ vitthārena paresaį¹ deseti, yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ vitthārena paresaį¹ vāceti, yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ vitthārena sajjhāyaį¹ karoti, yathāsutaį¹ yathāpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ cetasā anuvitakketi anuvicāreti manasānupekkhati. Then, just as they learned and memorized it, they teach others in detail, make them recite in detail, practice reciting in detail, and think about and consider the teaching in their heart, examining it with the mind.

ā€˜idaį¹, bhante, kathaį¹; imassa kvatthoā€™ti? ā€˜Why, sir, does it say this? What does that mean?ā€™

Ettāvatā kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhu assutaƱceva dhammaį¹ suį¹‡Äti, sutā cassa dhammā na sammosaį¹ gacchanti, ye cassa dhammā pubbe cetasā samphuį¹į¹hapubbā te ca samudācaranti, aviƱƱātaƱca vijānātÄ«ā€ti. This is how a mendicant gets to hear a teaching they havenā€™t heard before. Itā€™s how they remember those teachings they have heard. Itā€™s how they keep exercising the teachings with which they are already familiar. And itā€™s how they come to understand what they havenā€™t understood before.ā€
