Khattiyasutta Aristocrats

Atha kho jāį¹‡ussoį¹‡i brāhmaį¹‡o yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. And then the brahmin Jānussoį¹‡i went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho jāį¹‡ussoį¹‡i brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

ā€œKhattiyā, bho gotama, kiį¹adhippāyā, kiį¹upavicārā, kiį¹adhiį¹­į¹­hānā, kiį¹abhinivesā, kiį¹pariyosānāā€ti? ā€œAristocrats, worthy Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they fixated on? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?ā€

ā€œKhattiyā kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, bhogādhippāyā paĆ±Ć±Å«pavicārā balādhiį¹­į¹­hānā pathavÄ«bhinivesā issariyapariyosānāā€ti. ā€œAristocrats, brahmin, have wealth as their ambition. Theyā€™re preoccupied with wisdom. Theyā€™re fixated on power. They insist on territory. Their ultimate goal is authority.ā€

ā€œBrāhmaį¹‡Ä pana, bho gotama, kiį¹adhippāyā, kiį¹upavicārā, kiį¹adhiį¹­į¹­hānā, kiį¹abhinivesā, kiį¹pariyosānāā€ti? ā€œBrahmins, worthy Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they fixated on? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?ā€

ā€œBrāhmaį¹‡Ä kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, bhogādhippāyā paĆ±Ć±Å«pavicārā mantādhiį¹­į¹­hānā yaƱƱābhinivesā brahmalokapariyosānāā€ti. ā€œBrahmins have wealth as their ambition. Theyā€™re preoccupied with wisdom. Theyā€™re fixated on the hymns. They insist on sacrifice. Their ultimate goal is the realm of divinity.ā€

ā€œGahapatikā pana, bho gotama, kiį¹adhippāyā, kiį¹upavicārā, kiį¹adhiį¹­į¹­hānā, kiį¹abhinivesā, kiį¹pariyosānāā€ti? ā€œHouseholders, worthy Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they fixated on? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?ā€

ā€œGahapatikā kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, bhogādhippāyā paĆ±Ć±Å«pavicārā sippādhiį¹­į¹­hānā kammantābhinivesā niį¹­į¹­hitakammantapariyosānāā€ti. ā€œHouseholders have wealth as their ambition. Theyā€™re preoccupied with wisdom. Theyā€™re fixated on their profession. They insist on work. Their ultimate goal is to complete their work.ā€

ā€œItthÄ« pana, bho gotama, kiį¹adhippāyā, kiį¹upavicārā, kiį¹adhiį¹­į¹­hānā, kiį¹abhinivesā, kiį¹pariyosānāā€ti? ā€œWomen, worthy Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they fixated on? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?ā€

ā€œItthÄ« kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, purisādhippāyā alaį¹…kārÅ«pavicārā puttādhiį¹­į¹­hānā asapattÄ«bhinivesā issariyapariyosānāā€ti. ā€œWomen have a man as their ambition. Theyā€™re preoccupied with adornments. Theyā€™re fixated on their children. They insist on being without a co-wife. Their ultimate goal is authority.ā€

ā€œCorā pana, bho gotama, kiį¹adhippāyā, kiį¹upavicārā, kiį¹adhiį¹­į¹­hānā, kiį¹abhinivesā, kiį¹pariyosānāā€ti? ā€œBandits, worthy Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they fixated on? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?ā€

ā€œCorā kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, ādānādhippāyā gahanÅ«pavicārā satthādhiį¹­į¹­hānā andhakārābhinivesā adassanapariyosānāā€ti. ā€œBandits have theft as their ambition. Theyā€™re preoccupied with a hiding place. Theyā€™re fixated on their sword. They insist on darkness. Their ultimate goal is invisibility.ā€

ā€œSamaį¹‡Ä pana, bho gotama, kiį¹adhippāyā, kiį¹upavicārā, kiį¹adhiį¹­į¹­hānā, kiį¹abhinivesā, kiį¹pariyosānāā€ti? ā€œAscetics, worthy Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they fixated on? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?ā€

ā€œSamaį¹‡Ä kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, khantisoraccādhippāyā paĆ±Ć±Å«pavicārā sÄ«lādhiį¹­į¹­hānā ākiƱcaƱƱābhinivesā nibbānapariyosānāā€ti. ā€œAscetics have patience and sweetness as their ambition. Theyā€™re preoccupied with wisdom. Theyā€™re fixated on ethical conduct. They insist on owning nothing. Their ultimate goal is extinguishment.ā€

ā€œAcchariyaį¹, bho gotama, abbhutaį¹, bho gotama. ā€œItā€™s incredible, worthy Gotama, itā€™s amazing!

Khattiyānampi bhavaį¹ gotamo jānāti adhippāyaƱca upavicāraƱca adhiį¹­į¹­hānaƱca abhinivesaƱca pariyosānaƱca. Brāhmaį¹‡Änampi bhavaį¹ gotamo jānāti ā€¦peā€¦ gahapatÄ«nampi bhavaį¹ gotamo jānāti ā€¦ itthÄ«nampi bhavaį¹ gotamo jānāti ā€¦ corānampi bhavaį¹ gotamo jānāti ā€¦ samaį¹‡Änampi bhavaį¹ gotamo jānāti adhippāyaƱca upavicāraƱca adhiį¹­į¹­hānaƱca abhinivesaƱca pariyosānaƱca. The worthy Gotama knows the ambition, preoccupation, fixation, insistence, and ultimate goal of aristocrats, brahmins, householders, women, bandits, and ascetics.

Abhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā€¦peā€¦ Excellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! ā€¦

upāsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€
