kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. And then the brahmin JÄnussoį¹i went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho jÄį¹ussoį¹i brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:
āKhattiyÄ, bho gotama, kiį¹adhippÄyÄ, kiį¹upavicÄrÄ, kiį¹adhiį¹į¹hÄnÄ, kiį¹abhinivesÄ, kiį¹pariyosÄnÄāti? āAristocrats, worthy Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they fixated on? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?ā
āKhattiyÄ kho, brÄhmaį¹a, bhogÄdhippÄyÄ paĆ±Ć±Å«pavicÄrÄ balÄdhiį¹į¹hÄnÄ pathavÄ«bhinivesÄ issariyapariyosÄnÄāti. āAristocrats, brahmin, have wealth as their ambition. Theyāre preoccupied with wisdom. Theyāre fixated on power. They insist on territory. Their ultimate goal is authority.ā

āGahapatikÄ kho, brÄhmaį¹a, bhogÄdhippÄyÄ paĆ±Ć±Å«pavicÄrÄ sippÄdhiį¹į¹hÄnÄ kammantÄbhinivesÄ niį¹į¹hitakammantapariyosÄnÄāti. āHouseholders have wealth as their ambition. Theyāre preoccupied with wisdom. Theyāre fixated on their profession. They insist on work. Their ultimate goal is to complete their work.ā

āCorÄ pana, bho gotama, kiį¹adhippÄyÄ, kiį¹upavicÄrÄ, kiį¹adhiį¹į¹hÄnÄ, kiį¹abhinivesÄ, kiį¹pariyosÄnÄāti? āBandits, worthy Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they fixated on? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?ā
āCorÄ kho, brÄhmaį¹a, ÄdÄnÄdhippÄyÄ gahanÅ«pavicÄrÄ satthÄdhiį¹į¹hÄnÄ andhakÄrÄbhinivesÄ adassanapariyosÄnÄāti. āBandits have theft as their ambition. Theyāre preoccupied with a hiding place. Theyāre fixated on their sword. They insist on darkness. Their ultimate goal is invisibility.ā
āSamaį¹Ä pana, bho gotama, kiį¹adhippÄyÄ, kiį¹upavicÄrÄ, kiį¹adhiį¹į¹hÄnÄ, kiį¹abhinivesÄ, kiį¹pariyosÄnÄāti? āAscetics, worthy Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they fixated on? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?ā
āSamaį¹Ä kho, brÄhmaį¹a, khantisoraccÄdhippÄyÄ paĆ±Ć±Å«pavicÄrÄ sÄ«lÄdhiį¹į¹hÄnÄ ÄkiƱcaƱƱÄbhinivesÄ nibbÄnapariyosÄnÄāti. āAscetics have patience and sweetness as their ambition. Theyāre preoccupied with wisdom. Theyāre fixated on ethical conduct. They insist on owning nothing. Their ultimate goal is extinguishment.ā

KhattiyÄnampi bhavaį¹ gotamo jÄnÄti adhippÄyaƱca upavicÄraƱca adhiį¹į¹hÄnaƱca abhinivesaƱca pariyosÄnaƱca. BrÄhmaį¹Änampi bhavaį¹ gotamo jÄnÄti ā¦peā¦ gahapatÄ«nampi bhavaį¹ gotamo jÄnÄti ā¦ itthÄ«nampi bhavaį¹ gotamo jÄnÄti ā¦ corÄnampi bhavaį¹ gotamo jÄnÄti ā¦ samaį¹Änampi bhavaį¹ gotamo jÄnÄti adhippÄyaƱca upavicÄraƱca adhiį¹į¹hÄnaƱca abhinivesaƱca pariyosÄnaƱca. The worthy Gotama knows the ambition, preoccupation, fixation, insistence, and ultimate goal of aristocrats, brahmins, householders, women, bandits, and ascetics.

upÄsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhÄretu ajjatagge pÄį¹upetaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatanāti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā
