ā€œā€˜So vata, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pāpamitto pāpasahāyo pāpasampavaį¹…ko, pāpamitte sevamāno bhajamāno payirupāsamāno, tesaƱca diį¹­į¹­hānugatiį¹ āpajjamāno ābhisamācārikaį¹ dhammaį¹ paripÅ«ressatÄ«ā€™ti netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. ā€œMendicants, it is quite impossible that a mendicant with bad friends, companions, and associates, while frequenting, accompanying, and attending, and following their example, will fulfill the practice dealing with the supplementary regulations.

ā€˜Ä€bhisamācārikaį¹ dhammaį¹ aparipÅ«retvā sekhaį¹ dhammaį¹ paripÅ«ressatÄ«ā€™ti netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. Without fulfilling the practice dealing with supplementary regulations, itā€™s impossible to fulfill the practice of a trainee.

ā€˜Sekhaį¹ dhammaį¹ aparipÅ«retvā sÄ«lāni paripÅ«ressatÄ«ā€™ti netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. Without fulfilling the practice of a trainee, itā€™s impossible to fulfill ethics.

ā€˜SÄ«lāni aparipÅ«retvā kāmarāgaį¹ vā rÅ«parāgaį¹ vā arÅ«parāgaį¹ vā pajahissatÄ«ā€™ti netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. Without fulfilling ethics, itā€™s impossible to give up sensual desire, or desire to be reborn in the realm of luminous form or in the formless realm.

ā€˜So vata, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kalyāį¹‡amitto kalyāį¹‡asahāyo kalyāį¹‡asampavaį¹…ko, kalyāį¹‡amitte sevamāno bhajamāno payirupāsamāno, tesaƱca diį¹­į¹­hānugatiį¹ āpajjamāno ābhisamācārikaį¹ dhammaį¹ paripÅ«ressatÄ«ā€™ti į¹­hānametaį¹ vijjati. Itā€™s quite possible that a mendicant with good friends, companions, and associates, while frequenting, accompanying, and attending, and following their example, will fulfill the practice dealing with the supplementary regulations.
