Samādhisutta Immersion

ā€œā€˜So vata, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na santena samādhinā na paį¹‡Ä«tena na paį¹­ippassaddhiladdhena na ekodibhāvādhigatena anekavihitaį¹ iddhividhaį¹ paccanubhavissatiā€”ekopi hutvā bahudhā bhavissati, bahudhāpi hutvā eko bhavissati ā€¦peā€¦ yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaį¹ vattessatÄ«ā€™ti netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. ā€œMendicants, it is quite impossible that a mendicant without immersion that is peaceful, refined, tranquil, and unified will wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unobstructed through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful. They control the body as far as the realm of divinity.

ā€˜Dibbāya sotadhātuyā visuddhāya atikkantamānusikāya ubho sadde suį¹‡issatiā€”dibbe ca mānuse ca ye dÅ«re santike cāā€™ti netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. Itā€™s impossible that with clairaudience that is purified and superhuman, theyā€™ll hear both kinds of sounds, human and heavenly, whether near or far.

ā€˜Parasattānaį¹ parapuggalānaį¹ cetasā ceto paricca pajānissatiā€”Itā€™s impossible that theyā€™ll understand the minds of other beings and individuals, having comprehended them with their own mind,

sarāgaį¹ vā cittaį¹ sarāgaį¹ cittanti pajānissati ā€¦peā€¦ understanding mind with greed as ā€˜mind with greedā€™ ā€¦

vimuttaį¹ vā cittaį¹ vimuttaį¹ cittanti pajānissatÄ«ā€™ti netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. and freed mind as ā€˜freed mindā€™.

ā€˜Anekavihitaį¹ pubbenivāsaį¹ anussarissati, seyyathidaį¹ā€”ekampi jātiį¹, dvepi jātiyo ā€¦peā€¦ iti sākāraį¹ sauddesaį¹ anekavihitaį¹ pubbenivāsaį¹ anussarissatÄ«ā€™ti netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. Itā€™s impossible that theyā€™ll recollect many kinds of past lives, with features and details.

ā€˜Dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena satte passissati ā€¦peā€¦ yathākammÅ«page satte pajānissatÄ«ā€™ti netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. Itā€™s impossible that with clairvoyance that is purified and surpasses the human, theyā€™ll understand how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds.

ā€˜Ä€savānaį¹ khayā ā€¦peā€¦ sacchikatvā upasampajja viharissatÄ«ā€™ti netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. Itā€™s impossible that theyā€™ll realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

ā€˜So vata, bhikkhave, bhikkhu santena samādhinā paį¹‡Ä«tena paį¹­ippassaddhiladdhena ekodibhāvādhigatena anekavihitaį¹ iddhividhaį¹ paccanubhavissati ā€¦peā€¦ yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaį¹ vattessatÄ«ā€™ti į¹­hānametaį¹ vijjati. But itā€™s quite possible that a mendicant who has immersion that is peaceful, refined, tranquil, and unified will wield the many kinds of psychic power ā€¦

ā€˜Dibbāya sotadhātuyā visuddhāya atikkantamānusikāya ubho sadde suį¹‡issatiā€”dibbe ca mānuse ca ye dÅ«re santike cāā€™ti į¹­hānametaį¹ vijjati. Itā€™s possible that with clairaudience that is purified and superhuman, theyā€™ll hear both kinds of sounds ā€¦

Itā€™s possible that with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, theyā€™ll understand how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds.

ā€˜Ä€savānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ sacchikatvā upasampajja viharissatÄ«ā€™ti į¹­hānametaį¹ vijjatÄ«ā€ti. Itā€™s possible that theyā€™ll realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.ā€
