Vitthatadhanasutta Wealth in Detail

ā€œSattimāni, bhikkhave, dhanāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these seven kinds of wealth.

Katamāni satta? What seven?

Saddhādhanaį¹, sÄ«ladhanaį¹, hirÄ«dhanaį¹, ottappadhanaį¹, sutadhanaį¹, cāgadhanaį¹, paƱƱādhanaį¹. The wealth of faith, ethics, conscience, prudence, learning, generosity, and wisdom.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, saddhādhanaį¹? And what is the wealth of faith?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiį¹: Itā€™s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized Oneā€™s awakening ā€¦

ā€˜itipi so bhagavā arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho ā€¦peā€¦ buddho bhagavāā€™ti.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, saddhādhanaį¹. This is called the wealth of faith.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, sÄ«ladhanaį¹? And what is the wealth of ethical conduct?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako pāį¹‡Ätipātā paį¹­ivirato hoti ā€¦peā€¦ surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānā paį¹­ivirato hoti. Itā€™s when a noble disciple doesnā€™t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, use speech thatā€™s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical, or consume beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sÄ«ladhanaį¹. This is called the wealth of ethical conduct.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, hirÄ«dhanaį¹? And what is the wealth of conscience?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako hirÄ«mā hoti, hirÄ«yati kāyaduccaritena vacÄ«duccaritena manoduccaritena, hirÄ«yati pāpakānaį¹ akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ samāpattiyā. Itā€™s when a noble disciple has a conscience. Theyā€™re conscientious about bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and conscientious about having any bad, unskillful qualities.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, hirÄ«dhanaį¹. This is called the wealth of conscience.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, ottappadhanaį¹? And what is the wealth of prudence?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako ottappÄ« hoti, ottappati kāyaduccaritena vacÄ«duccaritena manoduccaritena, ottappati pāpakānaį¹ akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ samāpattiyā. Itā€™s when a noble disciple is prudent. Theyā€™re prudent when it comes to bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and prudent when it comes to the acquiring of any bad, unskillful qualities.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, ottappadhanaį¹. This is called the wealth of prudence.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, sutadhanaį¹? And what is the wealth of learning?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako bahussuto hoti sutadharo sutasannicayo. Ye te dhammā ādikalyāį¹‡Ä majjhekalyāį¹‡Ä pariyosānakalyāį¹‡Ä sātthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹ kevalaparipuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ abhivadanti. TathārÅ«pāssa dhammā bahussutā honti dhātā vacasā paricitā manasānupekkhitā diį¹­į¹­hiyā suppaį¹­ividdhā. Itā€™s when a noble disciple is very learned, remembering and keeping what theyā€™ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice thatā€™s entirely full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, rehearsing them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sutadhanaį¹. This is called the wealth of learning.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, cāgadhanaį¹? And what is the wealth of generosity?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraį¹ ajjhāvasati muttacāgo payatapāį¹‡i vosaggarato yācayogo dānasaį¹vibhāgarato. Itā€™s when a noble disciple lives at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, cāgadhanaį¹. This is called the wealth of generosity.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, paƱƱādhanaį¹? And what is the wealth of wisdom?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako paƱƱavā hoti ā€¦peā€¦ sammā dukkhakkhayagāminiyā. Itā€™s when a noble disciple is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, paƱƱādhanaį¹. This is called the wealth of wisdom.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, sattadhanānīti. These are the seven kinds of wealth.

Saddhādhanaį¹ sÄ«ladhanaį¹, Faith and ethical conduct are kinds of wealth,

hirÄ« ottappiyaį¹ dhanaį¹; as are conscience and prudence,

SutadhanaƱca cāgo ca, learning and generosity,

paƱƱā ve sattamaį¹ dhanaį¹. and wisdom is the seventh kind of wealth.

Yassa ete dhanā atthi, When a woman or man

itthiyā purisassa vā; has these kinds of wealth,

Adaliddoti taį¹ āhu, theyā€™re said to be prosperous,

amoghaį¹ tassa jÄ«vitaį¹. their life is not in vain.

Tasmā saddhaƱca sīlaƱca, So let the wise devote themselves

pasādaį¹ dhammadassanaį¹; to faith, ethical behavior,

AnuyuƱjetha medhāvī, confidence, and insight into the teaching,

saraį¹ buddhāna sāsananā€ti. remembering the instructions of the Buddhas.ā€
