Aniccānupassīsutta Observing Impermanence

ā€œSattime, bhikkhave, puggalā āhuneyyā pāhuneyyā dakkhiį¹‡eyyā aƱjalikaraį¹‡Ä«yā anuttaraį¹ puƱƱakkhettaį¹ lokassa. ā€œMendicants, these seven people are worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and are the supreme field of merit for the world.

Katame satta? What seven?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo sabbasaį¹…khāresu aniccānupassÄ« viharati, aniccasaƱƱī, aniccapaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« satataį¹ samitaį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ cetasā adhimuccamāno paƱƱāya pariyogāhamāno. First, take a person who meditates observing impermanence in all conditions. They perceive impermanence and experience impermanence. Constantly, continually, and without interruption, they apply the mind and fathom with wisdom.

So āsavānaį¹ khayā ā€¦peā€¦ sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. Theyā€™ve realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­hamo puggalo āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiį¹‡eyyo aƱjalikaraį¹‡Ä«yo anuttaraį¹ puƱƱakkhettaį¹ lokassa. This is the first person.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo sabbasaį¹…khāresu aniccānupassÄ« viharati, aniccasaƱƱī, aniccapaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« satataį¹ samitaį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ cetasā adhimuccamāno paƱƱāya pariyogāhamāno. Next, take a person who meditates observing impermanence in all conditions.

Tassa apubbaį¹ acarimaį¹ āsavapariyādānaƱca hoti jÄ«vitapariyādānaƱca. Their defilements and their life come to an end at exactly the same time.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, dutiyo puggalo āhuneyyo ā€¦peā€¦ anuttaraį¹ puƱƱakkhettaį¹ lokassa. This is the second person.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo sabbasaį¹…khāresu aniccānupassÄ« viharati, aniccasaƱƱī, aniccapaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« satataį¹ samitaį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ cetasā adhimuccamāno paƱƱāya pariyogāhamāno. Next, take a person who meditates observing impermanence in all conditions.

So paƱcannaį¹ orambhāgiyānaį¹ saį¹yojanānaį¹ parikkhayā antarāparinibbāyÄ« hoti ā€¦peā€¦ With the ending of the five lower fetters theyā€™re extinguished between one life and the next. ā€¦

upahaccaparinibbāyÄ« hoti ā€¦peā€¦ With the ending of the five lower fetters theyā€™re extinguished upon landing. ā€¦

asaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti ā€¦peā€¦ With the ending of the five lower fetters theyā€™re extinguished without extra effort. ā€¦

sasaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti ā€¦peā€¦ With the ending of the five lower fetters theyā€™re extinguished with extra effort. ā€¦

uddhaį¹soto hoti akaniį¹­į¹­hagāmÄ«. With the ending of the five lower fetters they head upstream, going to the Akaniį¹­į¹­ha realm.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, sattamo puggalo āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiį¹‡eyyo aƱjalikaraį¹‡Ä«yo anuttaraį¹ puƱƱakkhettaį¹ lokassa. This is the seventh person.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, satta puggalā āhuneyyā pāhuneyyā dakkhiį¹‡eyyā aƱjalikaraį¹‡Ä«yā anuttaraį¹ puƱƱakkhettaį¹ lokassāā€ti. These are the seven people who are worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and are the supreme field of merit for the world.ā€
