Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹e pabbate. At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, on the Vultureās Peak Mountain.
Tena kho pana samayena rÄjÄ mÄgadho ajÄtasattu vedehiputto vajjÄ« abhiyÄtukÄmo hoti. Now at that time King AjÄtasattu of Magadha, son of the princess of Videha, wanted to invade the Vajjis.
So evamÄha: He declared:
āahaį¹ hime vajjÄ« evaį¹mahiddhike evaį¹mahÄnubhÄve ucchecchÄmi, vajjÄ« vinÄsessÄmi, vajjÄ« anayabyasanaį¹ ÄpÄdessÄmÄ«āti. āI shall wipe out these Vajjis, so mighty and powerful! I shall destroy them, and lay ruin and devastation upon them!ā
Atha kho rÄjÄ mÄgadho ajÄtasattu vedehiputto vassakÄraį¹ brÄhmaį¹aį¹ mÄgadhamahÄmattaį¹ Ämantesi: And then King AjÄtasattu addressed VassakÄra the brahmin minister of Magadha,
āehi tvaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kama; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ mama vacanena bhagavato pÄde sirasÄ vandÄhi, appÄbÄdhaį¹ appÄtaį¹
kaį¹ lahuį¹į¹hÄnaį¹ balaį¹ phÄsuvihÄraį¹ puccha: āPlease, brahmin, go to the Buddha, and in my name bow with your head to his feet. Ask him if he is healthy and well, nimble, strong, and living comfortably.
ārÄjÄ, bhante, mÄgadho ajÄtasattu vedehiputto bhagavato pÄde sirasÄ vandati, appÄbÄdhaį¹ appÄtaį¹

EvaƱca vadehi: And then say:
ārÄjÄ, bhante, mÄgadho ajÄtasattu vedehiputto vajjÄ« abhiyÄtukÄmo. āSir, King AjÄtasattu of Magadha, son of the princess of Videha, wants to invade the Vajjis.
So evamÄhaāHe has declared:

YathÄ te bhagavÄ byÄkaroti, taį¹ sÄdhukaį¹ uggahetvÄ mama ÄroceyyÄsi. Remember well how the Buddha answers and tell it to me.
Na hi tathÄgatÄ vitathaį¹ bhaį¹antÄ«āti. For Realized Ones say nothing that is not so.ā
āEvaį¹, bhoāti kho vassakÄro brÄhmaį¹o mÄgadhamahÄmatto raƱƱo mÄgadhassa ajÄtasattussa vedehiputtassa paį¹issutvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. āYes, worthy sir,ā VassakÄra replied. He went to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho vassakÄro brÄhmaį¹o mÄgadhamahÄmatto bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:
ārÄjÄ, bho gotama, mÄgadho ajÄtasattu vedehiputto bhoto gotamassa pÄde sirasÄ vandati, appÄbÄdhaį¹ appÄtaį¹
kaį¹ lahuį¹į¹hÄnaį¹ balaį¹ phÄsuvihÄraį¹ pucchati. āWorthy Gotama, King AjÄtasattu bows with his head to your feet. He asks if you are healthy and well, nimble, strong, and living comfortably.
RÄjÄ, bho gotama, mÄgadho ajÄtasattu vedehiputto vajjÄ« abhiyÄtukÄmo. King AjÄtasattu wants to invade the Vajjis.
So evamÄha: He has declared:

Tena kho pana samayena ÄyasmÄ Änando bhagavato piį¹į¹hito į¹hito hoti bhagavantaį¹ bÄ«jayamÄno. Now at that time Venerable Änanda was standing behind the Buddha fanning him.
Atha kho bhagavÄ Äyasmantaį¹ Änandaį¹ Ämantesi: Then the Buddha said to him:
ākinti te, Änanda, sutaį¹: āvajjÄ« abhiį¹haį¹ sannipÄtÄ sannipÄtabahulÄāāti? āÄnanda, have you heard that the Vajjis meet frequently and have many meetings?ā
āSutaį¹ metaį¹, bhante: āvajjÄ« abhiį¹haį¹ sannipÄtÄ sannipÄtabahulÄāāti. āI have heard that, sir.ā
āYÄvakÄ«vaƱca, Änanda, vajjÄ« abhiį¹haį¹ sannipÄtÄ bhavissanti sannipÄtabahulÄ; vuddhiyeva, Änanda, vajjÄ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄni. āAs long as the Vajjis meet frequently and have many meetings, they can expect growth, not decline.
Kinti te, Änanda, sutaį¹: āvajjÄ« samaggÄ sannipatanti, samaggÄ vuį¹į¹hahanti, samaggÄ vajjikaraį¹Ä«yÄni karontÄ«āāti? Änanda, have you heard that the Vajjis meet in harmony, leave in harmony, and carry on their business in harmony?ā
āSutaį¹ metaį¹, bhante: āvajjÄ« samaggÄ sannipatanti, samaggÄ vuį¹į¹hahanti, samaggÄ vajjikaraį¹Ä«yÄni karontÄ«āāti. āI have heard that, sir.ā
āYÄvakÄ«vaƱca, Änanda, vajjÄ« samaggÄ sannipatissanti, samaggÄ vuį¹į¹hahissanti, samaggÄ vajjikaraį¹Ä«yÄni karissanti; vuddhiyeva, Änanda, vajjÄ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄni. āAs long as the Vajjis meet in harmony, leave in harmony, and carry on their business in harmony, they can expect growth, not decline.
Kinti te, Änanda, sutaį¹: āvajjÄ« apaƱƱattaį¹ na paƱƱÄpenti, paƱƱattaį¹ na samucchindanti, yathÄpaƱƱatte porÄį¹e vajjidhamme samÄdÄya vattantÄ«āāti? Änanda, have you heard that the Vajjis donāt make new decrees or abolish existing decrees, but proceed having undertaken the ancient Vajjian principles as they have been decreed?ā
āSutaį¹ metaį¹, bhante: āvajjÄ« apaƱƱattaį¹ na paƱƱÄpenti, paƱƱattaį¹ na samucchindanti, yathÄpaƱƱatte porÄį¹e vajjidhamme samÄdÄya vattantÄ«āāti. āI have heard that, sir.ā
āYÄvakÄ«vaƱca, Änanda, vajjÄ« apaƱƱattaį¹ na paƱƱÄpessanti, paƱƱattaį¹ na samucchindissanti, yathÄpaƱƱatte porÄį¹e vajjidhamme samÄdÄya vattissanti; vuddhiyeva, Änanda, vajjÄ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄni. āAs long as the Vajjis donāt make new decrees or abolish existing decrees, but proceed having undertaken the ancient Vajjian traditions as they have been decreed, they can expect growth, not decline.
Kinti te, Änanda, sutaį¹: āvajjÄ« ye te vajjÄ«naį¹ vajjimahallakÄ te sakkaronti garuį¹ karonti mÄnenti pÅ«jenti, tesaƱca sotabbaį¹ maƱƱantÄ«āāti? Änanda, have you heard that the Vajjis honor, respect, esteem, and venerate Vajjian elders, and think them worth listening to?ā
āSutaį¹ metaį¹, bhante: āvajjÄ« ye te vajjÄ«naį¹ vajjimahallakÄ te sakkaronti garuį¹ karonti mÄnenti pÅ«jenti, tesaƱca sotabbaį¹ maƱƱantÄ«āāti. āI have heard that, sir.ā
āYÄvakÄ«vaƱca, Änanda, vajjÄ« ye te vajjÄ«naį¹ vajjimahallakÄ te sakkarissanti garuį¹ karissanti mÄnessanti pÅ«jessanti, tesaƱca sotabbaį¹ maƱƱissanti; vuddhiyeva, Änanda, vajjÄ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄni. āAs long as the Vajjis honor, respect, esteem, and venerate Vajjian elders, and think them worth listening to, they can expect growth, not decline.
Kinti te, Änanda, sutaį¹: āvajjÄ« yÄ tÄ kulitthiyo kulakumÄriyo tÄ na okassa pasayha vÄsentÄ«āāti? Änanda, have you heard that the Vajjis donāt forcibly abduct the women or girls of the clans and make them live with them?ā
āSutaį¹ metaį¹, bhante: āvajjÄ« yÄ tÄ kulitthiyo kulakumÄriyo tÄ na okassa pasayha vÄsentÄ«āāti. āI have heard that, sir.ā
āYÄvakÄ«vaƱca, Änanda, vajjÄ« yÄ tÄ kulitthiyo kulakumÄriyo tÄ na okassa pasayha vÄsessanti; vuddhiyeva, Änanda, vajjÄ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄni. āAs long as the Vajjis donāt forcibly abduct the women or girls of the clans and make them live with them, they can expect growth, not decline.
Kinti te, Änanda, sutaį¹: āvajjÄ« yÄni tÄni vajjÄ«naį¹ vajjicetiyÄni abbhantarÄni ceva bÄhirÄni ca tÄni sakkaronti garuį¹ karonti mÄnenti pÅ«jenti, tesaƱca dinnapubbaį¹ katapubbaį¹ dhammikaį¹ baliį¹ no parihÄpentÄ«āāti? Änanda, have you heard that the Vajjis honor, respect, esteem, and venerate the Vajjian shrines, whether inner or outer, not neglecting the proper spirit-offerings that were given and made in the past?ā
āSutaį¹ metaį¹, bhante: āvajjÄ« yÄni tÄni vajjÄ«naį¹ vajjicetiyÄni abbhantarÄni ceva bÄhirÄni ca tÄni sakkaronti garuį¹ karonti mÄnenti pÅ«jenti, tesaƱca dinnapubbaį¹ katapubbaį¹ dhammikaį¹ baliį¹ no parihÄpentÄ«āāti. āI have heard that, sir.ā
āYÄvakÄ«vaƱca, Änanda, vajjÄ« yÄni tÄni vajjÄ«naį¹ vajjicetiyÄni abbhantarÄni ceva bÄhirÄni ca tÄni sakkarissanti garuį¹ karissanti mÄnessanti pÅ«jessanti, tesaƱca dinnapubbaį¹ katapubbaį¹ dhammikaį¹ baliį¹ no parihÄpessanti; vuddhiyeva, Änanda, vajjÄ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄni. āAs long as the Vajjis honor, respect, esteem, and venerate the Vajjian shrines, whether inner or outer, not neglecting the proper spirit-offerings that were given and made in the past, they can expect growth, not decline.
Kinti te, Änanda, sutaį¹: āvajjÄ«naį¹ arahantesu dhammikÄ rakkhÄvaraį¹agutti susaį¹vihitÄākinti anÄgatÄ ca arahanto vijitaį¹ Ägaccheyyuį¹, ÄgatÄ ca arahanto vijite phÄsuį¹ vihareyyunāāti? Änanda, have you heard that the Vajjis organize proper protection, shelter, and security for perfected ones, so that more perfected ones might come to the realm and those already here may live in comfort?ā
āSutaį¹ metaį¹, bhante: āvajjÄ«naį¹ arahantesu dhammikÄ rakkhÄvaraį¹agutti susaį¹vihitÄ bhavissatiākinti anÄgatÄ ca arahanto vijitaį¹ Ägaccheyyuį¹, ÄgatÄ ca arahanto vijite phÄsuį¹ vihareyyunāāti. āI have heard that, sir.ā
āYÄvakÄ«vaƱca, Änanda, vajjÄ«naį¹ arahantesu dhammikÄ rakkhÄvaraį¹agutti susaį¹vihitÄ bhavissati: ākinti anÄgatÄ ca arahanto vijitaį¹ Ägaccheyyuį¹, ÄgatÄ ca arahanto vijite phÄsuį¹ vihareyyunāti; vuddhiyeva, Änanda, vajjÄ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄnÄ«āti. āAs long as the Vajjis organize proper protection, shelter, and security for perfected ones, so that more perfected ones might come to the realm and those already here may live in comfort, they can expect growth, not decline.ā
Atha kho bhagavÄ vassakÄraį¹ brÄhmaį¹aį¹ mÄgadhamahÄmattaį¹ Ämantesi: Then the Buddha said to VassakÄra:
āekamidÄhaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, samayaį¹ vesÄliyaį¹ viharÄmi sÄrandade cetiye. āBrahmin, this one time I was staying near VesÄlÄ« at the SÄrandada Tree-shrine.
TatrÄhaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, vajjÄ«naį¹ ime satta aparihÄniye dhamme desesiį¹. There I taught the Vajjis these principles that prevent decline.
YÄvakÄ«vaƱca, brÄhmaį¹a, ime satta aparihÄniyÄ dhammÄ vajjÄ«su į¹hassanti, imesu ca sattasu aparihÄniyesu dhammesu vajjÄ« sandississanti; vuddhiyeva, brÄhmaį¹a, vajjÄ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄnÄ«āti. As long as these seven principles that prevent decline last among the Vajjis, and as long as the Vajjis are seen following them, they can expect growth, not decline.ā
āEkamekenapi, bho gotama, aparihÄniyena dhammena samannÄgatÄnaį¹ vajjÄ«naį¹ vuddhiyeva pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄni; When the Buddha had spoken, VassakÄra said to him: āWorthy Gotama, if the Vajjis follow even a single one of these principles they can expect growth, not decline.
ko pana vÄdo sattahi aparihÄniyehi dhammehi. How much more so all seven!
Akaraį¹Ä«yÄ ca, bho gotama, vajjÄ« raĆ±Ć±Ä mÄgadhena ajÄtasattunÄ vedehiputtena yadidaį¹ yuddhassa, aƱƱatra upalÄpanÄya, aƱƱatra mithubhedÄ. King AjÄtasattu cannot defeat the Vajjis in war, unless by bribery or by sowing dissension.
Handa ca dÄni mayaį¹, bho gotama, gacchÄma, bahukiccÄ mayaį¹ bahukaraį¹Ä«yÄāti. Well, now, worthy Gotama, I must go. I have many duties, and much to do.ā
āYassadÄni tvaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, kÄlaį¹ maƱƱasÄ«āti. āPlease, brahmin, go at your convenience.ā
Atha kho vassakÄro brÄhmaį¹o mÄgadhamahÄmatto bhagavato bhÄsitaį¹ abhinanditvÄ anumoditvÄ uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ pakkÄmÄ«ti. Then VassakÄra the brahmin, having approved and agreed with what the Buddha said, got up from his seat and left.
