Paį¹hamasattakasutta Non-Decline for Mendicants (1st)

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹e pabbate. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vultureā€™s Peak Mountain.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:

ā€œsatta vo, bhikkhave, aparihāniye dhamme desessāmi. ā€œMendicants, I will teach you these seven principles that prevent decline.

Taį¹ suį¹‡Ätha, sādhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œKatame ca, bhikkhave, satta aparihāniyā dhammā? ā€œWhat are the seven principles that prevent decline?

YāvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« abhiį¹‡haį¹ sannipātā bhavissanti sannipātabahulā; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pāį¹ikaį¹…khā, no parihāni. As long as the mendicants meet frequently and have many meetings, they can expect growth, not decline.

YāvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« samaggā sannipatissanti, samaggā vuį¹į¹hahissanti, samaggā saį¹…ghakaraį¹‡Ä«yāni karissanti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pāį¹ikaį¹…khā, no parihāni. As long as the mendicants meet in harmony, leave in harmony, and carry on their business in harmony, they can expect growth, not decline.

YāvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« apaƱƱattaį¹ na paƱƱāpessanti, paƱƱattaį¹ na samucchindissanti, yathāpaƱƱattesu sikkhāpadesu samādāya vattissanti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pāį¹ikaį¹…khā, no parihāni. As long as the mendicants donā€™t make new decrees or abolish existing decrees, but undertake and follow the training rules as they have been decreed, they can expect growth, not decline.

YāvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« ye te bhikkhÅ« therā rattaĆ±Ć±Å« cirapabbajitā saį¹…ghapitaro saį¹…ghapariį¹‡Äyakā te sakkarissanti garuį¹ karissanti mānessanti pÅ«jessanti, tesaƱca sotabbaį¹ maƱƱissanti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pāį¹ikaį¹…khā, no parihāni. As long as the mendicants honor, respect, esteem, and venerate the senior mendicantsā€”of long standing, long gone forth, fathers and leaders of the Saį¹…ghaā€”and think them worth listening to, they can expect growth, not decline.

YāvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« uppannāya taį¹‡hāya ponobhavikāya na vasaį¹ gacchissanti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pāį¹ikaį¹…khā, no parihāni. As long as the mendicants donā€™t fall under the sway of arisen craving for future lives, they can expect growth, not decline.

YāvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« āraƱƱakesu senāsanesu sāpekkhā bhavissanti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pāį¹ikaį¹…khā, no parihāni. As long as the mendicants take care to live in wilderness lodgings, they can expect growth, not decline.

YāvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« paccattaƱƱeva satiį¹ upaį¹į¹hāpessanti: ā€˜kinti anāgatā ca pesalā sabrahmacārÄ« āgaccheyyuį¹, āgatā ca pesalā sabrahmacārÄ« phāsuį¹ vihareyyunā€™ti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pāį¹ikaį¹…khā, no parihāni. As long as the mendicants individually establish mindfulness, so that more good-hearted spiritual companions might come, and those that have already come may live comfortably, they can expect growth, not decline.

YāvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, ime satta aparihāniyā dhammā bhikkhÅ«su į¹hassanti, imesu ca sattasu aparihāniyesu dhammesu bhikkhÅ« sandississanti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pāį¹ikaį¹…khā, no parihānÄ«ā€ti. As long as these seven principles that prevent decline last among the mendicants, and as long as the mendicants are seen following them, they can expect growth, not decline.ā€
